Our martins are back!!! While we were away it was lovely to see the swallows, and various different martins wheeling and twittering, and the swifts screeching around - but came back to silent skies - until this morning! They came back and popped back into our artificial nests, cleaned them out and then disappeared for the day as they usually do - presumably to feed. Do hope they really do mean to use the nests!

Also - the warm weather has brought on our (wild...) early purple orchids - now in full flower on our wild patch of grassland. :)

Years++ ago we had house martins all along the row of houses, then suddenly they didn't return  :'(.  Have yet to see a swallow in 2018

1st baby robin round my feet this morning, asking to be fed  :bounce:  Have to hope that the neighbours'  :cat88: doesn't catch it  :-\

It would appear that the dove whose partner was 'got' 2 weeks ago has another friend.  They are the same colour, unlike his wife of 5 years who was a lovely peachy shade.

Just heard cuckoo. Cleaning out entrance way, so loud it must have been nearby. :)

The funniest thing this morning...a woodpecker flew onto the fat balls. Obviously expected so feel a bit of resistance (as with a tree), I swear you could see the momentary look of surprise as his beak stuck in the fatball. Obviously liked it as he's been back along and introduced a nuthatch to the same experience..love it :)

No cuckoo's heard here yet. Sparrows nestling at the front of the house and starlings nesting at the back.  Very busy birds.

Went to Emetts Garden today to see the bluebell. Wonderful.

All I know about birds is that they fly. (Don't they) lol.
All I know are,  :P
Pigeons
Black birds (which we have a breeding pair out back somewhere, and the magpies kill their young, before they've hatched)
Blue tits
Crows
Seagulls
That's about it really, don't think I know anymore.
We do have a bird that sometimes appears on our fence that looks exotic,
In fact it's quite lovely, don't know what it is, but I think it's one of those birds you see sometimes
hovering in the sky, looking down at maybe a mouse or something when you're travelling in
the countryside.
Oh I know what a little Jenny wren is to.....  ::)

When I first came to live in England from Scotland all I'd ever seen were pigeons and sparrows so when I first saw blue tits and the yellowy ones I thought they were budgies flying loose I was amazed.

We've had a woodpecker on and off recently. I love hearing the owls at night and tonight we've had a hedgehog visiting. No bumblebee nests this year though which is really disappointing as we usually have several and there will be no lines of ducklings behind their mummies this year as we had to swap some hedging for a fence so unfortunately they can't get through anymore. They're better off by the river really but it always gave me a lift to see them
