Femarelle
« on: April 13, 2021, 04:22:48 PM »

Has any one tried Femarelle and had success with it?  How long does it take for it to make a difference? It contains fermented soya extract, flaxseed and vitamin B6.  If you send a message to me I will be able to see it but can't reply; suspect I have to be a member for longer.  So messages about Femarelle would be good on the forum.  Or any other similar soya or yam alternative.

You have to have made a certain number of posts to reply to a personal message but I can't remember how many.

Hi Sophie20, I have posted about using Femarelle before so I am literally going to cut & paste what I said:

I had been on HRT for 6 years and my GP wasn't keen on me continuing it without seeing a Specialist which was difficult because of Lockdown.  A Menopause Consultant had previously responded to my query about alternative therapies by saying Femarelle was the only supplement that had studies backing it so I decided to give it a go.  I have now been taking it since September when I stopped my HRT.  For anyone interested in the science of it - the one I take ("Femarelle Recharge") contains DT56a which is fermented soy extract, ground flaxseed and vit b6.  I did promise Hurdity ages ago to let you know how I get on with it so here goes:

I do think it is a fairly good alternative to HRT and will be continuing to use it.  But it does not 100% eliminate hot flushes.  On Femarelle, I get an average of 1-2 hot flushes per day.  I keep a note in my diary.  When I say 1-2 per day, I mean that is how it averages out.  So on some days I might get no flushes whatsoever and on other stressful days, I might get 3-4.  But what is remarkable is that I have stopped having night sweats/flushes altogether.  So I get a better night of sleep.  Another thing I have noticed is that it seems to help with vaginal dryness and dry eyes.  My mood is more even than it was on HRT.  It's a SERM (selective oestrogen reuptake modulator) which means people who have had breast cancer can have it.  Oh and it helps with bone density which for me is a big concern.

I'm not saying it's a miracle cure.  The negatives points are that it is expensive.  It's annoying to have to remember to take two tablets per day, one morning and one night.  It doesn't 100% eliminate hot flushes.  I have to order mine online which is irritating.  So it's by no means perfect and some people will simply be priced out of buying it.  I'm sure it won't work for everyone.

So my advice would be stick with HRT if you find a kind that totally suits you and you can get your prescriptions without having to argue with your GP about it.  However, If HRT is contraindicated for you or doesn't suit you then I think that Femarelle is a worthwhile alternative to consider trying.  If you ever do decide to give it a go - you really do have to wait for up to 12 weeks before you know where you are with it.  I almost gave up on it when quite suddenly - around the 10th or 11th week of taking it, my symptoms improved.  So you need to be patient.

Thank you Beaker for letting me know about your experiences with Famarelle.  It sounds like a very good alternative, and I am sure I will use it at some stage.  At the moment I am running through the other options.

Hi Beaker,

Thanks for your post.  I am reluctant to go on HRT and I'm looking for a more natural alternative.  I know I've gone through the menopause as I haven't had a period for 16 months now, my last one being in January 2020.  I don't really have hot flush but I get chills instead.  At night, almost every night, I get hot and it must be disturbing my sleep because it seems to wake me up.  But my symptoms are mainly emotional ones such as low mood and anxiety on a regular basis.  I wonder if Femarelle could help.

Hi Karine T,

I am on Femarelle only because I have to be on it.  Partly because my GP refuses to continue prescribing HRT without referring me to a consultant again and partly because I suffered almost unbearable nausea and acid reflux on transdermal HRT.  But if you don't get side effects from HRT then if I were you - that would be my first port of call.

However - yes I find that Femarelle evens out my mood and definitely helps my sleep.  I am in a very stressful job and find I manage to stay fairly calm.  So whilst everybody is different and I am sure it won't work as well for all women as it does for me, I do think it's worth giving it a try.  For me - it's a great alternative to HRT and I'm not quite sure what I would have done without it.

Interesting to say - my partner also used Femarelle Recharge and loved it as she found it helped sleep and calmness.  However she has now stopped it as her periods seem to have become more frequent on it.  Not sure why?  This was the reason she stopped HRT (i.e. it made her periods more frequent).  So like I say - not perfect for everyone I'm afraid.   I use Femarelle Recharge.  I am 54y old and my periods stopped altogether 21 months ago.  My partner is younger - age 51 - periods had gone down to every 10 weeks before starting Femarelle and then reverted to monthly.  So perhaps she should have been on Femarelle Rejuvenate which is aimed at perimenopause.  So it's a case of suck it and see.  Best of luck with it - I hope you find something that suits you.

Very interesting thanks Beaker.
I am tapering off HRT due to atypical Ductal hyperplasia (to be surgically removed shortly), a precancer of the breast that tends to be hormone receptive.
I found this 2013 Greek study after reading your comments now. Only 100 women, but promising results in a number of areas.

Thanks for this, hereandthere. Very heartening to those of us who have to come off HRT!
