Vitamin C finally get some respect
« on: March 25, 2020, 09:13:04 AM »

Being trialled in China and NY.

Glad theyre finally realising its all about firming up the immune system rather than relying on drugs after the event.

Another positive social turnaround that may come from Covid-19.

Grabbing at the VitC theory again?  The World has come on a lot since the discredited paper that I mention in the VitC thread I began last week.

The body excretes any excess it doesn't require or the patient gets an upset gut = the runs.  It will be interesting to see the outcome if it is a blind, peer reviewed study - but will it be of seriously ill people already affected by C-19, it isn't clear in the article.

How will : an estimated 140 participants : make any impact of a result?  Also:  "The patients who received vitamin C did significantly better than those who did not get vitamin C," he said.

"It helps a tremendous amount, but it is not highlighted because it's not a sexy drug." - that isn't explaining a lot though ........ better in what respect?

Thanks for that DM.

I've mentioned vitamin C in relation to the virus on another thread. Dismissed by some, unfortunately,  so it's good to see some more evidence for it.

 :thankyou:

Many treatments are being trialled. Sadly they don't seem to have found anything that actually works yet. Of course it makes sense to eat a good balanced diet so we are as healthy as possible. Taking supplements only helps if you have a deficiency.

Of course technology has improved quickly over the years so maybe VitC will prove useful, however, the small people undergoing a trial ain't going to prove anything!  Blind tests, Peer reviewed?

The randomized, triple-blind study will involve an estimated 140 participants and is expected to be complete by Sept. 30, according to information posted on the US National Library of Medicine's website.

Yes the body will use what it needs and excrete the rest, that need could be massive amounts on some days and little on others. We cannot store it so we need to take it in.

Most people's immune systems can deal with these viruses, for those who are struggling then the IV C seems logical.

We have all increased our intake at home.  It's a small thing to do that may help.

Just catching up - and nearly missed this because it is in the wrong place! It's about vitamins and a health conditionm not an alternative treatment to HRT for the menopause!! Nothing to do with menopause at all. Should be in "Other Health Discussion" really!

However....it is an interesting subject dangermouse but the subsequent discussion is mixing up two things. It is an absolute given that we should all make sure that our diets are not deficient in vitamins and minerals and we have the best chance of fighting any disease if we do so, along with taking exercise.

This intervention and the studies are talking about the use of extra vitamin C for medicinal purposes and specifically because the doctor in the article said that "vitamin C levels in coronavirus patients drop dramatically when they suffer sepsis, an inflammatory response that occurs when their bodies overreact to the infection." . It is not correcting a normal dietary deficiency but an observed deficiency during the later stages of this virus ie sepsis and when the cytokine strom is occurring I believe?

Trials aside, because vitamin C is not a drug, it does make sense to administer this to very sick patients if it can't do any harm, while of course at the same time conducting proper randomised control trials, although it looks like the trial is only very small. The effectiveness of high dose vitamin C over increased intkae eg of citrus fruit in improving outcomes of colds and flu generally, is still controversial and not sure what the evidence is?

The other drug treatments are different issues but great that they are being trialled too!

There isn't any proven link between high dose VitC and cure rates in any medical situations.  The body excretes what it doesn't require.

'wrong place' .............  >:(

Won't do any harm - if one ingests too much one gets 'the runs' so do make sure that your store has loo paper  ;)

I'm sure most people are sensible.  If you take enough to give you the shits you stop.

Too late though and how will that prove anything if the body ejects the VitC.  :-\

It's personal choice.  People do what ever they think may help.  So long as it's not dangerous go for it, I say.
