Author Topic: New here. Am I in menopause as on desogestral so GP won’t do bloods?  (Read 1343 times)

Hi. I've been on desogestral for 10 years plus with great effect. No periods. Starting with some menopause symptoms, joint aches, dry vagina and complete loss of libido mostly. On Ovestin 1mg cream which works ok. I am 49.
Mixed messages by GP but latest is can't do bloods while on mini pill. I get this, and don't want to come off it in case symptoms get worse. But not been offered anything else. Any advice please.

Hi  TrickyDicky

 :welcomemm:

Your name says itall! It IS  tricky to know where you are in menopause when on desogestrel ( Cerazette?) as this suppresses ovulation and depresses oestorgen levels. Your symptoms might just be due to this pill and low oestrogen levels. If you want to continue with a birth control pill then I would ask for QLAIRA or ZOELY because these also contain bio-identical oestrogen (estradiol), as well as progestogens (different from desogestrel) one had dienogest and the other Nomegestrol acetate.  This should also help with VA symptoms in addition to the estriol cream (keep on with this). The extra oestrogen may help with libido although tablet HRT is not the best for this but would suggest this in the first instance just to see if you feel any better with some extra oestrogen?

Like you say the only way of knowing whether you are peri-menopausal is to come off the mini-pill for quite a few months but then you might not want to do that - unless you're desparate to know?

What a really informative reply thanks. Do you think I would remain period free with the alternative pills you have suggested? I don't need the pill for contraception btw.

  • changes can be scary, even when we want them

My Gynae won't do blood tests as hormones alter all the while, he treats on symptoms.

Maybe keep a mood/food/symptom diary?  Browse round, do read the Vaginal atrophy and bladder related threads ;-)

If you don't need the pill for contraception why not use hrt instead? It's designed to replace your depleted hormones whereas the pill isn't.

Thanks everyone. You've got me thinking , so I've come off the pill now. I will see how my symptoms pan out. Not relishing the thought of periods again after 10 years but it seems a necessary evil!

Keep that mood/food/symptom diary?  Let us know how you get on?
