Measles Jab
« on: September 16, 2019, 03:58:55 PM »

I went to GP today for a review of my HRT, and while there she mentioned about the sudden rise in Measles, because of this they are vaccinating all their patients under 50 to the time the MMR came out. At the moment they are waiting for more of the vaccine to arrive, has anyone else been offered this? Just interested!

Nope.  Don't go to the Surgery very often.  I had measles and chickenpox; not mumps; the others had whooping cough  :-\ - I had German measles and salmonella through the years.  We used to have 'bug parties' ...... usually lasted 3-5 weeks to go through a village.

Nothing on the surgery web-site either.

I had polio and diphtheria early on.  At 13 I had a test on my wrist which required the TB vaccination.  Tetanux toxoide over the years but nothing of late.  Don't go for the 'flu jab.

I wonder why only under 50? I'm 53 and didn't have the measles jab (though I have had measles).

I wonder the same. Had measles when I was 3. My first real memory of being ill.

It was 30 years ago.  It was when my eldest son was about eight.  I remember it well because they were only vaccinating the very small and I had to fight to get it for him.

Just googled the over 50's are most likely to have had the measles infection and are likely to be immune. I have just found my inoculation cards I did have a measles jab in 1974 when I was 14 months, obviously my dr's records don't go that far back.

Most of that age group have likely had the measles infection so are now immune.

I was OK with measles until Mum suggested that I look into the bathroom mirror.  Then I felt ill  >:(

I remember calamine lotion for chickenpox which seemed to make the itching worse  ::)

I had chicken pox when I was 6 but didn't feel that unwell. It was just the itching. My brother had it at the same time. Didn't get mumps or whooping cough.

My little sister was one of the first to have the measles vaccination - born 1968, so over 50 now.

Edit - it is those born between 1970 - 1979 who only got the measles vaccine.  Don't know why they are less likely to have immunity against mumps and rubella than over 50s though - we all had rubella vaccine at 12 anyway so that leaves mumps.

MMR for non-immune adults
The MMR vaccine can also be given on the NHS to adults who may need it.
This includes:
people born between 1970 and 1979, who may have only been vaccinated against measles
people born from 1980 to 1990, who may not be protected against mumps
Check with your GP if you're not sure whether you have had the MMR vaccine.
If in doubt, go ahead and have it. Even if you have had it before, it won't harm you to have a second, or even third, course of the vaccination.

I wasn't vaccinated at all except apparently smallpox, without permission, my mother didn't believe in vaccinations, nor did her mother,
My oldest children weren't vaccinated either, much to my shame now,
RE the shingles vaccination, i didn't even know there was one,and i got shingles about 3 years ago, very painful it was too
