Hello!
Nice to meet you!
I thought I'd sign up for MM to see if there are any older women out there. I'm 69 and have been taking HRT for about 20 years. In my younger years I had severe PMS so it was no surprise when symptoms of the Menopause came around and were pretty debilitating (one of the unlucky ones I guess?)
The nurses at my surgery have been recommending I come off HRT due to my age and I have tried coming off a couple of times but all the symptoms just return. So, I was referred to a menopause clinic specialist who advised no need for me to stop HRT but changed the one I was on (Tibolone) to Estradiol patches, Utrogestan capsules and Vagifem pessaries. They seemed to be doing the job quite well and are less of a risk but lately Ive noticed I'm becoming stressed at the least thing, have mood swings, ie frustration, anger, low mood. My GP has suggested I try a low doze anti depressant but I'm not keen as I was on them a few years ago and had difficulty coming off them.
Just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience or is able to offer any advice?
Thanks, CathyG.

Hi CathyG
Welcome aboard. Glad you've found us...
Can't offer much help, but maybe your not on enough oestrogen as before?
I'm just guessing because I don't know much about the hrt you were on, or are on now...
I'm sure someone will be on shortly to offer advice...good luck with it all, it's a nightmare isn't it?

Why change something when it's working?

Give the menopause clinic a ring and book another appt.. Pronto.  Take a list with you and ask.  It may be that you require a hike of something.  If you have anxiety then you need an anti-anxiety medication, not an anti-depressant!

I had no trouble stopping ADs.  It wasn't pleasant so I did a weaning regime which took 9 weeks.  I had to swap hence the weaning off.

Browse round.  Make notes ;-)

I wonder how much is ignorance on the part of GPs or even down to Budgets?

Thanks everyone for your replies, really helpful.
I was told the reason for changing the way I take HRT was because of the increase in risk due to my age?
I'll take your advice CLKD and make a list and make an appointment with the menopause clinic to discuss.
Totally agree about quality of life!
Best wishes, CathyG x
