Newbie starting HRT
« on: June 17, 2019, 04:50:06 PM »

Hi Everyone
New to this forum and to all things "Menopause". I am 45 and have been having different symptoms over the last 2-3 years, including acid reflux, burning mouth syndrome, low libido, heavy periods, night sweats, fatigue, brain fog....the list goes on. Then a couple of months ago I started experiencing very sore joints. In fact I thought I had injured my shoulder and went to see a physio. The physio exercises didn't help and I got to thinking that perhaps something else was going on. I didn't really think that these symptoms were connected until I saw my GP and she recommended this website and forum!! Had all the blood tests under the sun and all have come back normal, but GP says I am definitely Peri-Menopausal. She prescribed elleste, but due to the current unavailability she has now prescribed Femoston 1/10, which I picked up today.
Not usually a tablet kinda girl, but I can't wait to see if these are going to work and give me some relief!
Any advise in how to deal with this journey most welcome  ;)

Hi YogiNic, welcome to the forum, I've not long joined myself. Your post sounds similar to my journey, 3 years of investigations seeing various specialists, trials of different medications/treatments until I was finally listened to by a GP trainee. I haven't had a burning mouth or heavy periods but the rest amongst others I had. I was started on anti depressant first as the GP recommended it for flushes whilst he waited for reply to email to menopause consultant. At the end of that week I started HRT (Everol sequi, patches) I have most definately had an improvement in symptoms however sleep is still an issue for me so at my 3 month review I have been changed to Everol 75 & Provera (started Friday). It might be worth keeping a diary if you are not already doing so to give you an idea of your symptoms and any changes/improvements. The other thing you could look at is general lifestyle as this can help reduce symptoms. All the best, keep us posted on how you are getting on. I was so relieved to be told I was peri as the alternatives were very scary and I had become so frustrated with worsening symptoms and no diagnosis.

Hi YogiNic,

I hope you're feeling better or will start to feel better soon on the HRT. Re: your joints- from what I've read up on about estrogen is that it plays quite a big role in this area and bones in general. Therefore, fluctuating and lower levels of it would more than likely lead to pain in the joints. I have been using HRT for just under 3 months now and find that my joints aren't as achy. However, I also have more energy because I can sleep again (better but not perfect)  and therefore am able to exercise more so this also may be why my joints feel better. Regardless, your GP sounds like she/he is on top of it all and how fortunate that he/she seems well educated about perimenopause.

I hope you feel better soon. I know I did and although things aren't perfect I feel a heck of a lot better in general. I do find when I get stressed I don't sleep as well...I wake up hot and wide awake at 3 or 4 am...OMG it makes me so angry but I am trying to calm myself because the anger keeps me up even longer  :o Anyway, good luck and nice meeting you on here!  :)

Thanks Foxylady and LuLu71 for your lovely replies and your recommendations. I have started to keep a journal so I can chart my symptoms....hoping to see them improve with the HRT.  I am slight, don't smoke, have a glass or 2 of wine in a week, eat healthily, run and do yoga and still having all these symptoms, which is why I am hoping the HRT is going to help. Fingers crossed! I will keep you updated  :)
