It's World Holocaust Day tomorrow, 27th January.

However large our troubles remembering this puts it into perspective.

 :thankyou:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

Engraving of the poem presented at the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston, Massachusetts

"First they came ..." is a poem written by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984). It is about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group. Many variations and adaptations in the spirit of the original have been published in the English language. It deals with themes of persecution, guilt and responsibility.

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day.

Now 75 years since the horror but still something to be reflected on and not forgotten.

There is a lot of remembrance on TV this evening and tomorrow night.  I do wonder how those that liberated the Camps suffered too.

My FinL was a prisoner under the Japs and they weren't liberated until much later.  These are the forgotten Far East Prisoners.  The Memorial near Stafford is a lovely place to visit with representation of many different peoples affected by the various Wars.

I visited Auschwitz in 2001. Really shocking place. I particularly remember being taken into a large building which had showers mounted on the walls. Prisoners were led in under the impression that they were going to have a wash but it was actually a gas chamber. The doors were closed ........ 😥

My gosh, I don't know if I could do that as I'm clustrophobic anyway.

We have looked at tours that include a visit there but I have always been in two minds.  I know there has been a lot of controversy with some visitors not taking it seriously and taking selfies etc.,  I don't think I would have the patience with that and would want to punch them.

It still feel we ought to go though but will have to pick the right moment.

I didn't see that happening when I was there. I did take a few photos but no selfies.

It's probably a more recent problem I think.

There could of course be a ban on all photography.  There are plenty of historic pictures and news reels.  It's when I see the shoes piled up .......  :'(

Man's Inhumanity to Man  >:(

There was reference to more recent atrocities on BBC1 last night with survivors reading pieces, one was a young Roma girl from Slovakia who was in tears most of the evening.

Children of Windermere and the following programme were interesting.  Quietly moving.
