Duavive and side effects
« on: April 08, 2018, 03:01:21 PM »

Hi there,

I'm wondering if any of you have tried Duavive?  I have been on it for 4 months and on the 4th month started getting lots of hot flushes, and also poor vision - where my eyes just don't feel comfortable - possibly migrainey, also a sore jaw on one side - maybe from clenching my teeth which I have never done before.

I am 48 and went into early menopause (very surprisingly) at about 46 and started on Femaston.

My Dr suggested Duavive as I think im probably allergic to progesterone, as have always had pmt.  i saw her a few days ago and she suggested an oestrogen pump on one arm for the hot flushes. I didn't mention the vision or jaw as I hadn't thought until now that it could be a symptom.  I have been using oestrogen for a few days but still getting hot flushes.

I also don't like the fact that the tablets are huge! And I'm not keen on the ingredients. I'm thinking of trying bio identical but will my pmt come  back? And will I have to come off everything to start a fresh?

Feeling a little worried and concerned as to whether  to persevere with this hrt or try to find a bio identical progesterone - if that does exist? Or to try a different hrt?

Any ideas would be really gratefully received!
Thanks, Phia xx

Mary G was on it but not any more and someone else too I think. Go to the home page of the forum and do a search and the threads will come up as there aren't that many on this - it's fairly new!

It's also fairly low dose so if your current HRT is not controlling your flushes then it may not be sufficient as Duavive is only one dose.

What progesterone are you using alongside the oestrogen pump? Also I presume you are taking Femoston conti? I wouldn't have thought it was a good idea to take extra oestrogen without additional progesteron ie in addition to the Femoston conti as you may get over-thickening of the womb lining. This does sound highly unorthodox to me! If you can bear to go back to having a bleed and Femoston suits you otherwise there is a double dose Femoston 2/10 ie 2 mg but you would get a withdrawal bleed every month.

Otherwise you can use oestrogen gel (which is bio-identical) as you have been given - along with micronised progesterone (Utrogestan). Have a look at the menu tabs - under Treatments and you will see the different HRT types listed.

Hope this helps and you find something that works. :)

Phia, I ran a trial using Oestrogel and bazedoxifene (the progesterone substitute (SERM) part of Duavive) last year and it was a case of it worked, I didn't!  I didn't have any problems with side effects but I found that the bazedoxifene opposed the oestrogen which should not happen in theory.  I found that my sweating problem was starting to creep back so I decided to ditch it - I also felt a bit flat.  Interestingly you are not supposed to use bazedoxifene with Oestrogel because it is supposed to cause breakthrough bleeding but I didn't have any problems of that nature at all.  I had intended to trial Duavive proper but didn't bother because I knew it would not be a high enough dose of oestrogen.

I am severely progesterone intolerant and have to seriously limit my progesterone intake and have regular scans, it's either that or a hysterectomy in my case.  Is this something you could consider?

Thank you for your replies.. sorry this has taken me so long.

I have now been to see Professor John Studd who deals with Bio Identical.  I know have 3 pumps of oestrogen, and Testogel every day, plus will be taking another tablet for only 7 days of the month, to make me have a period.

I feel happier not taking Davie and I think I feel more myself, less slightly flat...  I'm hoping that the PMT won't make me feel terrible when I take the tablet to make me have a period!

Does anyone know where the best place is to put testosterone?  Also, using one sachet in a week seems quite a lot!

Thanks,

Hi Phia, I am so glad you brought this topic up. I too am struggling with Duavive. It doesn't seem to be that effective. I still have symptoms.
What you have been prescribed now is baffling to me. What are you taking exactly?

Hi Mary G, I am on Duavive and it doesn't seem to be working. I too am intolerant to progesterone. I have had a hysterectomy (still have my ovaries). I don't know what options I have left as the patches didn't work. Can you make any suggestions? Thank you!

Hi Phia, the symptoms you have just listed are discussed in the links a few of the other ladies have posted. I think they maybe side effects. Maybe discuss all of these symptoms like poor vision with your GP?

hi there,

I'm now on bio identical and so far so good!  I do 3 pumps of Oestrogen, some testosterone and also a tablet I take for 7 days to make me have a period.  I'll let you know how that goes.  I'm hoping my PMT won't be terrible as I am allergic to Progesterone.xx

Hi Phia - hope you get on well on this combo. Also to say that you can get the oestrogen gel and the progesterone tablet on NHS - I presume you've got a prescription for your doc from Studd? Getting testosterone prescribed oon NHS is a bit hit and miss though, and some docs who do prescribe it are woefully ignorant on doses!

Phia, well done for making the switch - and for making an appointment with Professor Studd so quickly, I know he is very busy at the moment.  Duavive looks good on paper but the oestrogen dose is too weak for many women.  I think it would work much better with a higher dose of oestrogen and the same dose of bazedoxfene - my opinion is that the ratios are way out.

It sounds like you are the same as me and have progesterone induced migraines so it is important to keep your progesterone dose to an absolute minimum.  You can have uterine scans to check that the womb lining is clearing sufficiently but don't worry about that for now.

Mrs_Bella, I'm not sure if you have intentionally left MM or accidently exited but I will reply for the record.

I don't know why you were prescribed Duavive if you have had a hysterectomy because you could easily take oestrogen only HRT risk free.  If you are reading this, I would switch to Oestrogel or Lenzetto (Evamist in the US) if it is available there.

Good luck both.

Mary G the study that was carried out before Duavive was released tested various different doses of oestrogen and different doses of bazedoxifene. Higher doses of oestrogen gave higher incidence of unscheduled bleeding and so was the baze.. was less protective for the uterus. I am just quoting from memory so don't have the precise details but it is easily found if anyone wants to look it up. There definitely should be more research into baze..with other oestrogen preps and different doses too.

Hi Mary G,
I tried to modify my profile but unknowingly deleted my account. I couldn't get back my profile as it kept coming up black.
My GP put me on Duavive because I had no luck with the Vagifem thingie, patches, an oral estrogen tablet or Tibolone. It's only a country clinic I go to not a specialist. I would have to travel 4 hours to see one.
Thank you for your suggestions! I will see my GP and ask her about the 2 products you have suggested.
