Femoston 2/10
« on: April 09, 2018, 03:33:22 PM »

Hi, I've been back to the doctors today as I'd got the end of the trail period on Evorel Sequi and not got on well with it (flooding etc).  I've now been put on Femoston 2/10.  Why would I be put straight onto 2/10 and not 1/10?

Thanks,
Sarah

It depends on your absorption but very broadly Femoston 1/10 is low dose and 2/10 is medium dose, as is Evorel sequi.

It has to do with our age. At young ages we need higher doses. I'm 42 and on femoston too.

sadlielouise - it is strange that they have given the higher dose - it is always better to start on a low dose first to see if it works and only increase if symptoms are not under control.  I had a premature menopause and I was never good on the higher doses, in fact when I was younger the higher doses gave me horrid headaches each day!!! Sometimes in post meno women do need a higher dose for a time to really compensate for the big oestrogen drop. When younger, the dose will depend on where you are in the peri meno stage or simply how much oestrogen you need to keep menopause symptoms under control. WE are all different so the dosage needed will vary greatly.
I assume you were on the patches before?  If so, they are medium dose and this would explain why the GP gave you the higher dose of Femoston.
I assume you are peri meno and by using the combined patches (which are medium dose) you were possibly adding in too much oestrogen which could result in heavier bleeding. There is also the chance that you have fibroids which can give heavier periods as well.
IF bleeding becomes a real problem, then having a Mirena fitted can solve this and you simply have oestrogen as gel or patch alongside.
In your place, I would be tempted to contact the surgery and ask for the lower dose version but you could simply give the 2/10 a go and see how it suits you.  DG x

Hi Dancinggirl,

Thanks for your reply.  Yes I was on patches before, on the medium dose so, yes, I guess that's why I was given the 2/10 instead of the 1/10.  I started the tablets last night so I will see how I get on with them.  As for the heavy bleeding, it actually stopped about 3 days ago and so far it hasn't started again (although there's discoloured discharge so it's not completely gone).  I have had the Mirena Coil before and had it for 9 months. I had a terrible time with it and was flooding badly.  In the end, after a evening of, what I can only describe as contractions and my body try to expel the coil, I had it taken out.

I'll see how I go on the 2/10 and I have to report back to the doctors in a month so I may change down to the 1/10 if the heavy bleeding starts again.  I did consider coming off it completely due to the bleeding but I'm going to give this one a try.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah.  We spoke about Femoston on here before and I just quoted you earlier in my post "Have I got this right please?" to find out how you're getting on with Femoston as I'm about to ask my doctor for it.  But I see from this that you have only just started on it so please ignore my question in the other thread!  I hope you see an improvement.  I'll report back how it goes for me.  I'm looking to change because of the side effects of the progesterone in my current HRT - nausea, headache and a voracious appetitie that's playing havoc with my weight :-( x

Hi Tiddles,

Yes I'm now on day 4 and I have to say I feel great! The bleeding has stopped (even the discoloured discharge) whereas on the other types the bleeding and pain started on day 2. I'm sleeping really well, even when I wake up to let the cat out at 4am I'm going straight back to sleep. My moods good. No headaches. And no night sweats. So I'm happy so far. I've had stupid, clumsy incidents this weekend such as falling down the stairs, head butting the garage door and whacking my knuckles on the front door which all made me think 'is this menopause but I think I've just been unlucky this weekend haha! 😆 Fingers crossed this is the one for me!

Hopefully it'll be the one for you. Let me know.

Wow Sarah - that's brilliant news - I'm really pleased for you - long may it continue.  I'll let you know how I get on.  Got to get over the hurdle of convincing the doctor that MM knows more than he does and to let me change to Femoston. The appointment's tomorrow.  Wish me luck ! x

Tiddles - do print off the info under TREATMENTS to show the GP. It helps being able to show them the difference between the progesterones and why some are harsher than others.

Thanks Dancinggirl.  I did as you suggested and took my symptom diary, went through it, went through why I thought I needed to change to Femoston, explained what MM was and showed him the printouts, said I wanted to try Femoston and he said "Fine, I'll prescribe that". No arguments, job done! Power to the people ! x  :bday3: :bday3: :bday3:

That's brilliant Tiddles!  Did he put you on 1/10 or 2/10?

Hi Sarah.  1/10  because that's what I asked for based on the fact that I was doing really well on the oestrogen part of the month on 1mg, plus the advice on here that suggested at my age (56) I should need less oestrogen than someone younger and also because I'm a bit worried about 'going in hard' and would rather try the 1/10 and see how it goes first.

Did you find out why your GP started you on 2/10 or have you drawn any conclusions?  How's it going on the Femoston today ? x

No I'm not due back to the doctors for another 3 weeks but I think she'll probably say 'because the meno specialist lady she asked said so'.  Erm I'm ok today.  I didn't sleep too well last night but that sometimes happens on a Sunday night.

Are you starting yours today?

The doc told me to finish the others first (Elleste Duet) - I've just gone into the progesterone phase so a couple of weeks left.  Were you told to do the same?
