Oestrogel application site
« on: March 13, 2018, 04:42:42 PM »

Just out of curiosity, has anyone been told to use Oestrogel on outer thighs? At the menopause clinic (Chelsea & Westminster, Nick Panay's clinic) the other day, the specialist nurse said they recommend outer thighs. I have always used inner thighs as that is what most ladies on this forum seem to do. Told her this but she said outer is what they recommend.

As far as I remember, the consultant I saw initially just said apply to thighs or arms.

Thanks.

Leaflet says inner thighs, shoulders and top of arms...if I remember rightly!

I apply alternate days to outer, and inner thighs, and veryoccasionally to tops of arms (outer)
I prefer to rotate application sites to help absorption, so one area isn't getting over used

I have been using it for 12 yrs and I alternate between inner legs each day, spreading it from the thigh down to the calf.

I've only been using just over a week and have gone by the leaflet which says inner thighs but when I was speaking to my consultant he indicated outer thighs.

I was told upper, outer arms and inner thighs but I don't suppose it matters as long as you get a good spread.  I found that when I applied it to the inner thighs it helped with mild VA.

This often comes up! The oestrogen patches all say apply to lower trunk/abdomen below waist, as does Sandrena gel. Oestrogel is the only transdermal oestrogen preparation which says you can apply to shoulders or arms. Personally I wouldn't want to unless it was lower forearm. Ditto with testosterone gel. T gel can be transported transversely through the skin a long way from application site. I haven't read whether this is the case for oestrogel although there is a concentration gradient going inwards to the bloodstream. In case there is (transportation or oestrogen along the skin) I would want to apply it as far as possilbe from the breasts and therefore not on shoulders or arms. I must emphasise that this is only my personal view and I don't use oestrogen gel, only testosterone, nor have I read any studies about this (haven't been able to find any for oestrogen gel, only testosterone)... Interesting that the doctors vary so much - but presumably that is because the instructions indicate the different application areas?

Many thanks to the ladies who replied to this. I have just upped my dose from 2 pumps to 3 as bloods taken in January showed only 89pmol/l. I guess 2 inner thighs and 1 outer will be as good as anywhere, as I am mainly using it for VA and to avoid osteoporosis. The Testogel can go on the outer thigh that's not being used for Oestrogel. Then at least I can get on with wielding the dumbbells for my arm exercises while it all dries!
Best wishes to you all,
