....bladder probs....Eeeek!! :O
« on: November 09, 2017, 10:34:08 AM »

....for the last few days I've been very aware of my bladder and needing to pee a lot more than usual. It's a sort of cystitis feeling - a  bit irritated and hardly anything comes out, but I still feel like I need to go. Was just thinking I must have a 'wee' infection  :) and about to make appointment with doc.  Yesterday, was sitting at computer, had been to the loo a few times but nothing really happening.  I stood up from computer and - it was like my waters broke!  LOADS of pee everywhere, thank goodness I was wearing a pad but the volume was even more than it could cope with.  I didn't feel any urge to go or 'feel' like I was peeing and I didn't feel like I if I could stop it....it was just this water gushing out. The strange thing is, since then Ive not been so irritated.  I wonder what this could be? Something (stone) trapped in bladder tube or something??  Start of bladder/VA?

Will go to doc but wondered if anyone had ever had this happen.  Thank goodness I was at home!  Never had anything like it happen before and sincerely hope it never happens again  :-\

I would definitely go to the doctor - could be a bladder stone, or prolapse problem blocking the urethra or something, if not an infection.  Might be worth asking to see a pelvic floor physio.

I have always had a problem knowing when to go since I had my first child (especially when sitting), but have never experienced anything on this scale - although when I feel particularly irritated, I have twice been unable to make it to the loo in time and lost a full bladder   The first time I had spare knickers (thanks to my 'menopause survival kit'  ;) ) and posher trousers to change into but I had to do a choir concert in damp boots  :-\  The second time it was the car seat that got it.

The best thing I have found (apart from the vagifem) is to drink plenty of water so that my bladder does not get irritated.

Also, I NEVER EVER, drink instant coffee, especially upmarket supermaket Columbian  ::)  Funnily enough, an occasional cup of cafetiere coffee, brewed strongly and with plenty hot milk (French style) is fine.  But not the instant stuff.  It must concentrate something.

....actually, I've just realised I've been drinking a LOT of coffee recently.  Colombian instant.  I'm on a bit of a diet for Christmas, and coffee with sugar free syrups helps me control my sweet tooth. Think I'll go back on normal amounts of my daily tea!

Thanks again dahlia

Ha Ha  ;D  It would be the Columbian!  ::)

I had clocked that instant coffee was a bad thing, but one day, when I was visiting a lovely old lady friend for singing practice, she had got out some of this upmarket Columbian stuff, and not knowing her very well at the time, and wanting to be polite, and since there was a bit of a crowd, I accepted, rather than put her out to make tea for me.......

When I got home, I went straight for the downstairs loo - fully dressed  :-\  I suppose that ought to count as a third 'disaster'.  Since then, I have decided never to touch the Columbian stuff ever again - it was a bit of a joke really  ;D

I have a cup of coffee once a week - cafetiere, supermarket Essential blue mountain brand - absolutely lovely.  Use twice the coffee and half the water, brew and pour a little into a mug of microwaved milk, with a big spoon of sugar.   8)

Yes, too much tea is irritating too.  Not quite on the catastrophic scale of the Columbian Instant coffee though. :(  But I definitely notice if I have overdone the tea.

It is a good idea to drink other things in between and herb tea is nice and warm in the winter - I usually have chamomile which is calming, as I am not sure about the effects of other herbs on the bladder.  Peppermint and Eucalyptus type ones I have for wind, or colds, seem ok.

The best thing I find, during a period of bladder irritation is to drink plenty of water - I have a glass by me when I am working and it disappears - then I have my normal tea breaks on top of this.  If you drink enough to make sure your urine is straw-coloured, it helps stretch your bladder and it also stops the urine irritating the bladder.  It usually works for me within the day.

I sometimes find that the powders you can buy for cystitis relief help. I think they work by making urine less acidic and less irritating to the bladder. A teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water can help too. I also find that fizzy drinks have a terrible effect on my bladder.

Do read the threads on vaginal atrophy as your symptoms can mimic VA!

Sweetpea I wondered about you mentioning dieting and if it was one of those low carb diets. This July I was sick for six weeks with bladder problems after dieting and after seeing two different doctors had to see a specialist. My bladder was super irritated and very painful, the urge to go kept me up all night. The doctor mentioned something about the low carb diets can lead to kidney and bladder problems and I should come off it. I had no idea and kept thinking what did I eat or drink that would cause this. I guess as we get older we get more and more issues especially with the bladder anyway I do hope you can get sorted out.

Oh wow, thank you Annika! Yes, I do low carb...I do drink the required amounts of water, but I quite often get low back pain and I'm sure it's kidney related.

I've been to the GP (I meant to update this thread, but got waylaid by other things happening) and was diagnosed with a bit of a urine infection. Got a course of trimethoprim.  Yuk. Hate taking antibiotics.
She thinks the sudden bladder release is related, and as long as it doesn't happen again (please god, it doesn't happen again!!) it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks again!

'diagnosed' how exactly, unless your urine was sent to a Lab to be grown, the GP is incorrect to prescribe ABs!  You need appropriate treatment for atrophy which does mimic urine infection-type symptoms.

Low back pain can be just that, low back pain. Unreleated to kidneys, you would know if it were kidney problems as the pain will be elsewhere.  Any 'required' amounts of water were pushed by the bottled water companies in the early 2002s.  First pee will be dark and maybe smelly, the remaining urine should be straw coloured: any paler and the body is dehydrated which can be dangerous as it excretes essential minerals. My urologist told me that years ago  ::), told me not to forget that liquids are absorbed from food stuffs as well as from what we drink and the amount we perspire  ;).

The body needs a mix of food stuffs in order to function and heal itself.  Finding that balance can be difficult so maybe ask for an appt. to see a dietician?
