Hello !
« on: November 21, 2016, 06:04:25 PM »

Just joined today, and would like to say Hi. Im 54 and struggling with symptoms :-\
Tiredness (I work full-time) joint pains in my ankles and knees, my shins ache a lot too!
I dont sleep particularly well, very wakeful.
Probably the worst thing is that I feel very sick a lot, usually morning.
In general I dont feel particularly well a lot of the time!! :-(

Not taking anything, didnt want to go on HRT. I suffer with Migraines and dont think it would be wise.

Hi Alison, I am new to this site also. I suffer from silent migraines 24/7 that I take propanonl and pritzofen daily for. I'm 49 and peri with periods flooding every two weeks. Because of my migraines my consultant is starting me next week on an injection every 4 weeks called Zoladex to stop my periods and a form of HRT tablet daily called Tibolone, which is supposed to be more suitable because of my migraines. I'm in the UK, some countries don't prescribe the tablet. Has your consultant fully discussed what you could have because of your migraines?

Hi Theresa

No, I havent fully discussed the HRT/Migraine link yet, as its only now Im beginning to have problem symptoms.
I too take Propranolol daily. My Migraines arent hormonal I dont think, usually brought on by combination of stress and tiredness.

Thanks for your reply, hope you find an answer ! x

Hello Alison and welcome to the forum.

I have most of your symptoms also. I'm grateful I only work part time as don't know how I would manage full time, so can understand how tired it must make you. Have you had your Vitamin D levels checked as that can cause tiredness and joint pain? Mine was low and I now take a supplement. It did improve my tiredness and joint pain. My joint pain seems to be in wrists, right knee and ankles.

I too quite often feel sick in the mornings and so I take an anti histamine and it seems to help.

If you haven't already, make an appointment to see your GP and discuss your symptoms and they will run some blood tests to check for Vit D, B12, Thyroid etc.

 :welcomemm:  HORMONES  >:(  :sigh:

I was diagnosed with IBS in 1999, I was suicidal.  Intense bloating.  Nausea.  By mid-afternoon I was unable to keep the zip of my skirt done up, by T-time I couldn't even sip a cuppa.

My gut couldn't process food as the spasm had almost stopped working.  My GP prescribed Colpermin to ease upper gut wind as well as Motillium to force food through.  These had to be swallowed within the hour prior to main meals.

Within 3 days I felt better, although I had several blips along the way.  After a few years I dropped the above and drank Actimel pots several times a day.  Which really does help my IBS.

Ginger is good for nausea.  Eating in the night if one crosses the landing/back - a small biscuit should be enough.  Make sure that you have a supper so that the body isn't empty on rising.  It's like morning sickness  :(.

Don't dismiss the HRT route.  At least discuss with various medics as well as keeping hydrated, exercise when you can.  Browse round, make notes!

Hi Alison_J

 :welcomemm: from me too.

Sorry to hear about your migraines and symptoms - which I presume are due to menopause as you have joined up here?! I was wondering what your cycle is doing and whereabouts in menopause you are? I presume you have started skipping periods and perhaps your periods are getting further apart?

HRT is not out of the question even if you suffer from migraines so don't rule it out just yet although if they do not have a hormonal cause it is more important to discuss this fully with a specialist before deciding. Here is what it says on this site about (mainly hormonal) migraines and HRT:

Migraine
Migraine is often triggered by hormonal fluctuations and therefore may occur around the time of a period. Such migraine may improve at the time of the menopause. Some women find that migraine may be triggered by the daily hormone fluctuations which can occur with oral (tablet) HRT so the transdermal (patch or gel) route is usually preferred with a history of migraine.

As for doing things naturally - I fully understand your view and I felt exactly the same until symptoms were so debilitating that I couldn't work properly mainly due to lack of sleep and the disruption caused by the hot flushes. This is why I went down the route of bio-identical HRT - that is using hormones ( all available on NHS) which are identical with the hormones that are produced in our own bodies - ie estradiol (for the oestrogen) and progesterone (Utrogestan) which are fair less likely to cause or aggravate migraines than the stronger synthetic oestrogens of the contraceptive pill, and the synthetic progestogens. Some thing to think about for the future maybe?

Not sure where the propanolol fits in re any further medication or advice, but I presume you have a condition requiring this - I know it is a heart medication but I understand has a consequence (as it is meant to do) of lowering blood pressure so perhaps this could be aggravating your problems and migraines etc, including sickness? Perhaps the dose needs adjusting now you are peri-menopausal.

Good idea to have blood tests - as a baseline and to check whether all is functioning properly at this stage in your life. Now is also a good time to take a look at your lifestyle (if you need to!) re smoking, alcohol, diet, exercise, body weight, stress etc  and see if there is anything you could do which would help you to feel better naturally and to minimise some of the negative symptoms.

Let us know if we can help in any way :).
