Just watched some of the news coverage and it is truly shocking.

Far right politics and extremists are very dangerous and anyone, who even thinks they have something interesting to say should examine their consciounses. MI5 have acknowledged the increasing threat from them.

Terrible attack in New Zealand. It's such a peaceful country with a low crime rate, it makes it even more shocking.

Carried out by a far right group. Extremists come in all guises.
unfortunately probably regarded by the terrorists as a soft option because of the usual low crime rate.

Too right. My eldests son is much travelled and lived for a year in New Zealand.  Amazingly, given some of the iffy places he has been too, he was mugged in New Zealand. He couldn't believe it as the crime rate is so low. Talk about bad luck.

It's the exception that proves the rule though.

The person that carried out the atrocity was born in Australia.  So he's not an immigrant to New Zealand then  :-\ - how does that work?  4 people were arrested ..........  49 dead.   :'(

Shocking news.

I have family in NZ, they will tell you the crime rate is not low, I was surprised when the told me but lots of it is family related and when the rugby team the All Blacks don't do well, A & E where my sister in law works is full  :'(

They also have big drug problems, my image of a tranquil, everybody friendly country was soon squashed, but they have lived there for 20 years and never mention coming back.

Travel between NZ & Australia is not subject to strict control for citizens of those countries.

Australian Resident Visa
Australian citizens and permanent residents can visit, study, work and live in New Zealand. You won't need to apply for a visa before travelling and can be granted a New Zealand resident visa when you arrive – as long as you meet our character and entry permission requirements when you get here.

A bit like us and Eire then, before the EU.

as long as you meet our character and entry permission requirements when you get here..  that worked well then  :-\ and he was an immigrant.  He had moved from Oz to New Zealand according to 1st reports, however it seems now that he had gone to NZ specifically to target the Muslim community  :'(

I have friends in NZ who have told me several times about the high suicide rate.

My friends stated that NZ has the highest suicide rate per capita in the World.  They live there.

To be honest and I have googled it and none of the graphs I have seen put NZ particularly high. Could be a perception thing with your friends?
