Worried - breast lump
« on: April 01, 2013, 09:00:30 AM »

Hi,
Last week I found a small pea - sizes lump on my breast.  The thing is, my breast really hurts - like having a spot that hasn't come out yet if you see what I mean.  I can tell this isn't a spot though.  I had always been lead to believe that breast lumps wouldn't be painful.
I have had sore breasts in the past leading up to a period but nothing like this.
I'm going to try and see the doctor tomorrow but any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

:)  A number of years ago I had found a lump in my breast and it was rather painful.  I was very concerned, but the initial contact with the Dr. about it greatly reduced my fears when he told me cancerous tumors are not usually painful.  My lump ended up being from a swollen duct and went away on its own.

Jellyb, I have experienced various lumps of the kind you describe and one in particular that was investigated. It was a cyst in my case. I also had one under my arm that was a boil. These things can flare up due to hormones... I know you'll be worried though, so it's best to get it checked out to put your mind at rest :).

I have my own recent (ongoing) issues - you might have seen the thread - but I have a strong family history so please don't let that worry you.

Let us know how you get on

I hope that your lump is nothing to worry about. When I search for lumps, I am never sure whether they are usually actually visible to the eye (ie outside the skin) or whether you mostly feel them with your fingers beneath the skin surface. I have not found anything yet but have never been 100% confident about what i should look for.
Any tips welcome. I did once ask about this at the doctor's surgery but was just given a leaflet which didn't help that much.

Hi katejo, in shower, soap up breasts and run finger tips gently over whole breast and under the arm at the border of the breast.  Also, the only surface bad sign is a dimpling of the skin, or rarely, an unusual rash. There are other ways to check, but this works well for me.  The slippery soapy surface makes it much easier to feel.  No need to press hard.  Also check area of nipple around and under to the extent you can.

Hope you are able to get an appointment with your doctor.  It's not easy to stay calm when anything unusual is found in the breast but in the majority of cases, it's nothing to worry about.

Keep us informed and hope all goes we.

Hi,
Just an update.
I saw my GP yesterday.  She thinks it's just breast tissue but, as I have private cover through work, has referred me to the local specialist.  I see him on Thursday afternoon.

Another update:-
Saw Consultant today, he could feel the lump but also said I had some small cysts on my other breast.  So, had a mammogram today and have to go back next week for a scan and to see him again with the results of both tests.

It sounds as if you are well on the way to getting it sorted.  Just to add, I had a painful lump some years ago, after a mammogram and stuff, the consultant decided it was nothing to worry about, and it eventually went away on its own.  I suspect it was because I was on the mini pill at the time, which is notorious for causing breast lumps.

Are you more relieved now?   :foryou:

Will the scan be an ultra-sound?
