Title: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!
Post by: Taz2 on December 20, 2010, 12:47:14 PM
Hi Ladies - I managed to get an emergency appointment today with my lovely dentist thinking that I just needed a small filling, maybe, to stop the toothache I have had for a few days. It turns out it is an abscess in my gum which needs prompt treatment. She has done the cleaning up and I am still, thankfully, numb but I have to take Flagyl. The dentist was very straight and honest telling me to go and get anything done that I need to do before I start them as there is only a very slim chance that I wont end up either feeling really sick or being sick or with a nasty case of "the runs" as she put it.

Still, I suppose that's better than raging toothache. Can't drink alcohol either. I still have lots to do and to top it all OH has been sent to Teesside till late Christmas Eve so as well as sorting my house out I am also sorting his out and feeding his cats, birds, keeping an eye on the pond etc etc.  ::)

Still onwards and upwards... and it's snowing hard... oh well what doesn't get done doesn't get done!

Taz x  :)

Oh poor you. I know what it's like though, i still have pain in my gum, g.p ain't interested and dentist couldn't see anything, i wonder though if i go back to either if maybe this antibiotic would clear it up, it's like really sensitive teeth in the cold.
Taz you are only one person, one amazing person i might add, but still only one pair of hands. Don't run yourself ragged, Christmas is only one day after all. Eddie. x

OH is on  msn and asking me about the weather and he says "you sound in a bad mood"  :beat: :beat: :beat:

If the ab is right under the tooth inside the core of it how can he or anyone beside a dentist and Xray see it
Ring ask say you need it LIE say the dentist said you have one I would broad spec like Keflax are slower to work but
They wont spoil anything for yu or make you sick though they may give you Thrush xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Suzi, I know what you mean about G.P. i couldn't get dentist so the g.p. gave me antibiotics, they didn't do anything but give me thrush, i thought they may refer me to dental dept? or dental hospital, dentist did xrays and nothing, but it's bloomin' sore when the cold air or anything warm touches it? That's months that it's been going on for, i just don't know what else to do.

Nasty!  I hate getting stuff like that from the dentist.  ALways makes me really ill.  Is it just a one dose thing or over a few days?  If it's one dose, you'll feel ok for Christmas day hopefully.  My dentist usually gives the one dose stuff.  Pretty lethal I can tell you.

A dentist can often tell if there is an abscess by the way the patient needs scraping off the ceiling once the gum is prodded  :o!  As for gifts, don't worry.  New Year will be fine  ;).  Make sure that you are where you need to be in order to care for the cats, pond etc., it's a full time job here and we live at home!

It says that 200mg is normal for dental infections but she has prescribed 400mg three times a day for three days. I think she wanted me to get it out of the way before Christmas so I could have a glass of wine or two. She did say that if they made me feel really horrible then to take it for two days if possible.

That's a high doseage for a reason  ;) .. to get the drug into your system to fight the infection as quickly as possible.  Don't even consider drinking alcohol for at least 3 days after you stop taking it!  although soaking the affected gum could be seen as medicinal purposes of course  :P

My dentist is very clued up in homeopathic remedies. When I have had an abscess she has told me to try Hepar Sulph. It really helps. I am not suggesting that you dont take the anti biotics but this stuff really helps.

Viv. I forgot about that, i will try it out, Suzi, it's like sensitive teeth when there is a change in temp, but other than that it's uncomfortable to touch the tooth with even my tongue, i can't bite even toast, and if my bottom tooth hits it, it's agony. I think it's prob a low grade infection that will hopefully eventually pass. However going skiing after xmas is going to be testing.  :'(

It's ok I know about the alcohol thing. No alcohol for at least 48 hours after you finish the course if you want to avoid falling over and throwing up after one GLASS instead of one BOTTLE!

Have taken the first one anyway - so only eight more to go!

By the way one interesting thing emerged from my visit today. She mentioned that the abscess was caused because my gums are shrinking. She couldn't understand it as six months ago my gums were really healthy. I mentioned that I had stopped HRT a couple of months ago and she said "Well, that's your answer then".  I feel about 90 now!

That is interesting, Taz. I've suffered from sensitive teeth for years but noticed my gums were shrinking and the sensitivity was getting worse a few years ago. The last year, the shrinkage seems to have stopped. Think I started peri 3 or 4 years sgo, started HRT last year. Coincidences?!

My dentist was quite adamant that this was the reason my gums had deteriorated over the past few months. I have found this - although it is from 199 - which mentions oral health towards the end of the article http://cdnedge.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/431842.stm

Although this thread is about dental health, the article linked to above is out of date (1999) with its heart disease info.

You're brave - I wouldn't touch Flagyl due to the side-effects.

Could you ask for a cephalosporin such as cephalexin instead?  It may give you a mild dose of the runs and make you feel sleepy but is very unlikely to make you sick.

I hope it clears up quickly....
Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!
Post by: Taz2 on December 21, 2010, 07:04:42 PM
Thanks Karen - I can take Cephalexin with no problems at all - in fact I was on a low dose for a year due to recurrent cystitis before I discovered I had vaginal atrophy.

The dentist said that I couldn't have that one as I needed one with an anaerobic component - something to do with starving the infection of oxygen - I didn't listen properly.

So far I haven't had any side effects, touch wood, apart from a slightly dizzy feeling, headache and, this afternoon, the feeling of beginning cystitis which I believe is a side effect in some people. I can cope with these as it doesn't stop me doing stuff  :). I am hoping that side effects would be worse at the beginning and then get better and that, maybe, I will be ok.

Oh Well  :-\ ...... I saw my lovely dentist today who told me that there is low-grade infection around the last back tooth upper right so long story short; need extraction followed by 1 or 2 implants ....... because of my 'young' age it is better to implant rather than leave 4 gaps along there.  So tooth needs extracting so that it doesn't blow up with pain and then ........ he is VERY good.  He did psychology as well as dentistry, is good at explaining issues and told me that I have had longer with this cracked filling than he thought was possible.

Implants? Wow. You may have to have a bone density test first though - my mate couldn't have hers done as she did not have enough jaw bone to anchor into. Another friend had them though - cost a fortune mind but it did look good... eventually. Lots of work - not sure I would have had the patience for it and I couldn't have afforded it anyway. Let us know how it goes. Why do you have to have an extraction just because of an infection?

The tooth is old  ;D and has had much work done over the years.  So there's more filling than tooth.  So it will take a LOT of drilling and even then, may not be saveable.  So out with the old ......... and I don't fancy a 'plate'  :sick02:  ...... my bone density is good I think despite my age, Bless Him, he didn't know how to be diplomatic about telling me that 'at my age'  :-X

Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!
Post by: CLKD on January 10, 2011, 07:30:58 PM
Yep.  I was offered extraction at nearly £50.00 which is essential, sooner rather than later.  A plastic plate is in the £100+, a metal plate around £600, implants are probably more comfortable adn begin at £2,000+ each.  However, they will last 15 years or so.  They take about 12-18 months for the top ones to be implanted and the crown fitted.  Oh errrrr .......... 'at my age ' and as I have fillings on the other side of the mouth, if I began eating purely on that side I would need work doing sooner rather than later so it sort of evens out.

I've had to stop the Flagyl as I started the all over rash and itching and headache yesterday. Was ok, apart from splitting skin on hands and feet and oral thrush, last time but this time it's got me! Anyway, dentist has put out a prescription for Pencillin V which I have to go and pick up tomorrow (will be late for work again!) and hopefully that might sort it before my appointment on Friday.

Hope you get through to your dentist tomorrow.

It is all to do with whether it is cosmetic or necessary I think and my dentist was a bit wary about implants due to my being over 55 - loss of bone etc. The ones I would like implanted were removed some time ago and the jaw bone has shrunk a lot so the implant might not take. I must admit I haven't followed it up too closely. My dentist is a mixture of private and NHS. I will have a proper look into it. This is an interesting read http://www.dentalhealth.org.uk/faqs/leafletdetail.php?LeafletID=20  Sets it all out.

All is explained here CLKD http://www.bupa.co.uk/individuals/health-information/directory/d/dental-implants#textBlock196896   you will be numbed right up so shouldn't feel anything until the jabs wear off. Have you had the bone assessment yet to make sure you have got enough in the jaw? I am sure you will be fine. Well done for having it done.

No wouldn't say it was painful, probably rather uncomfortable would be fairer.   Had to have xrays to assess the bone density first.  Mine was ok which was a surprise because I'm 64 and was expecting it might not be. And also due to circumstances and fear I had put the implant off for quite a while after the extraction and know the bone shrinks away from the extraction site.
I actually had two dentists as my regular one doesn't do implants.  So had the implant done and screwed in etc, then a few weeks later when that had settled went to my regular dentist for the crown that fits over the top of the implant.

WOW what a morning!  thought the extraction would be a 10 min job, 50 mins after the injection went in the 2 dentists were still pulling and prodding  :o - the tooth was well set into the bone - apparently - and the root is still in-situ.  If it is painful by Friday then it will be a Hospital job to remove the remainder of the root!  2 lots of anti-biotics, spitting blood - still but no pain only soreness where they leaned tools on my lip and cheek! Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!

Pretty sure it's two every four hours with Nurofen, CLKD.   I can't take ibuprofen due to stomach problems and for anybody think it's best if you take them with food.
Sorry you had such a rotten time with the extraction.   I did as well which is what took me a while to pluck up courage to do the implant for a few months.   I got a 'dry socket' infection and had abs and they can also pack the extraction site with some stuff which eases it a lot.

But honestly, the implant is way easier than the extraction!  Hope you manage to sleep ok, your jaw is probably bruised.

Glad that you had a not too bad night CLKD. The last tooth I had extracted had wound its roots all around each other and it took over an hour to cut through the gum (eventually after much tugging) and get it out. I had a wonderful black eye and bruised and swollen face the next day - scared all the children at school! I looked like something from Halloween  :bat:

Whoops - sorry Eddie. I am still suffering myself - abscess calmed down but where the gum has shrunk away from the tooth it is so tender - old age gum shrinkage. I have had a filler put on it but it is still aching and I have a feeling the abscess is on its way back. I am still taking pencillin V but it is not very effective - plus I find it impossible to take it four times a day on an empty stomach or at least an hour before food. When in school I have to eat at set times so that makes it tricky.

Hope you get on ok on Friday.

I think i'll have to change it anyway, only made it today, but i was shocked, the receptionist said 1st of march? for my own dentist, but an associate had an appt for Friday, so i jumped at it, but forgot the plumber is coming on Friday to fit new kitchen radiator. I was trying to juggle it, when hubby came home and said his exhaust just fell off his car, so now i need to walk too, don't think so, maybe this associate isn't very busy on Monday. Fingers crossed.

What is it with anti-biotics!  I went to my GP Surgery and spoke with our Pharmacist yesterday, complete with list of when to take the blasted medicines ....... she told me not to be too rigid, that Erythymycin needs an empty stomach to help absorbtion but hey, once I've had breakfast -that's a laugh  ::) - and my morning cuppa etc. the stomach isn't empty before the next dose is due ....... and the other AB needs LOTS of water as it's a dry tablet the size of a 50p [well nearly] piece and needs to be taken with food : + Nurofen as often as necessary, +anti-depressant and betablocka at night ........... = neartburn  >:( >:(  As for 4 in a day, well 2 and perhaps 3 I might manage !

I missed a couple of AB doses yesterday as I slept most of it away.  I ached all over from where the dentist had been pulling and I had been tensed: my legs, my chest, my ribs ........ the needle points are sorethis morning so I can't open my mouth to put a spoon in so my lovely warmed through tinned rice is now .......... cold  :( ......

I can't speak properly yet without dribbling  :-X

Hi CLKD, What is an AB?  I sure hope you are feeling better.  What a drag as they say here.  Don't forget lots of yogurt to prevent yeast.  Sorry, that (mentioning yeast) was kind of a downer and I think it was mentioned before anyway.  Be well!

Are you rinsing with warm salt water, but not forcibly.  That will surely help healing and help keep things clean, but I'm sure you know that.  So sorry about the drug side effects.  I hope you do not have a dry socket.  Has the clot been checked.  I had two dry sockets with my large six year molars and I truly would rather have had a baby.  I hope you start feeling better very very soon.  I'm just up and may have missed some posts.

Well just back from dentist, he thinks it's strange because there is def infection shown on xray, but not raging, can't understand the hold/cold pain either as there is no nerve. So he's now referred me to dental dept of local hospital for opinion. He doesn't think i have any option other than apicoectomy or removal. don't think i can cope with either, i'm itching all over thinking about it.

What is an apicoectomy?  Pray tell.  Dental pain is famous for being referred from another tooth entirely.  Our son is a dentist and said anywhere along a nerve, pain can show up - especially confused if sinuses are involved.

The sinus lift is not something I could even think about CLKD - you are very brave. Where are they taking the bone from? My mate had hers taken from her hip I think. She did have trouble though and had to have it redone. It was two years before she could have her implants. Is it because you haven't got enough bone left?

Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!

No didn't have a sinus lift, CLKD and didn't need bone taken, had enough there which was surprise because I thought as I was _so_ old it may have all disappeared!   Must admit if it had involved a bone graft I may have had second thoughts.
Had tooth extracted and due to infection problems and a lot of abs which then gave me a UTI problem, I had a long gap before I plucked up courage to do the implant.  Have to say the implant rod bit was actually not bad at all.
So good luck with it all.

Does no one do fixed bridges anymore with the bridge of a false tooth fitted over two crowned teeth.  I have two of them and both over 25 years old.  Just wondered.

Has everyone read about the osteoporosis drugs depleting bone in the jaw, which has caused problems for implants.  My friend just went through that situation.

Oh Lord, reading this thread is frightening!  Despite 6 root canal treatments and 4 crowns up top and 2 in lower front teeth, that implant malarkey sounds scarey. Couple of years ago, had to have one of my incisor crowns removed and a bridge of some description put in. It was a doddle but I keep worryign that if the crown next door to it gives up the ghost (as they sometimes do after 25+ years), I'll need a bigger bridge or implants!  Eeek.  Good luck ladies :(

Hi Taylor,
Yes still do bridges but I was advised to have the implant because with a bridge the teeth are all joined together and if you then have a problem with any one of them it is more difficult to sort out.   The dentist said that as I have a bad abscess that can sometimes mean they reoccur so in the end I made the decision to have the implant, it was my choice.  Well sort of a choice :)
Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!
Post by: Trey on March 05, 2011, 12:39:08 AM
Hi Cres: Son's a dentist and he did one of my bridges.  Because it's all crowns little chance or far less chance of decay and if abscess can drill through the crowns, if I recall correctly.  I've had one 31 years.  Two six year molars pulled that were perfectly fine, due to sinuses (not diagnosed) in Air Force (husband was) at time.  Thought were abscessed, but alas, perfect roots.  It's an imperfect world.

Honestly, implants really aren't that bad, apart from the huge cost!   The idea of the drilling into the jaw to place the titanium rod really made me feel queasy but the actual doing of it was ok.

Would definitely want to know about the dentist's credentials, CLKD.  I was sent to a dentist by my regular dentist as he doesn't do implants.  The guy I went to spent 90 per cent of his time on implants.  I then went back to my own dentist for the crown to be fitted, so cost was split between them.
Hope you can sort it out.
Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!

CLKD - a sinus lift ALWAYS involves bone being grafted. It could be because the bone isn't dense enough or because the tooth is too close to the sinuses and you need to add the bone to lift the sinus away from the tooth "root" - either way bone has to be grafted on. Don't be taken in by a soft approach to this. If he said "sinus lift" then you will need bone to be added. Sorry.

Had daughter at the dentist. Poor soul needs four fillings. One large and three small shadows showing. The dentist has said her two years in braces have played havoc with her teeth.
She could brush but not floss and sometimes her mouth was so painful she could not do anything at all.
It seems such a shame that she has gone through so much to have nice straight teeth only to be left with all these problems.

She has two 40 min appointments and is dreading it.  :(

I had braces two years ago (51), had metal ones on for 12 months, the whole procedure cost me £2700. What a difference to how I look and apparently to how long my teeth are going to last me ... I couldn't clean my teeth properly before as they were so crowded and overlapped each other. There are great things you can use to floss with these days, go under bridges, braces and I see there is even an aqua flosser.

Yep I agree with Fleurie - I hate the inter dental brushes but use them everyday. As we get older then more care is needed to keep gums healthy and flossing or inter dental poking helps to do this. What is filthy about flossing?

I had braces in my late 20's and have always used floss.  The amount of debris that can get trapped between teeth always amazes me and if it was not removed could cause bad breath and tooth decay.  Am a bit confused why you think it is a dirty habit CLKD.  I have always considered it basic oral hygiene.  :-\

Has anyone ever read that report that says that gum problems can be a contributory factor to heart disease?   I can't remember all the details now but it did seem to make sense and have discussed it with my dentist usually when he's nagging me to be better about flossing :)

They clean their teeth with a twig.

My daughter had all the kit to clean around her braces with and she did do her best, but obviously it was not enough. She had really complicated work done. Teeth were turned 180 degrees teeth were moved forward and into place. She even had a CT scan to see if it was possible. She now has lovely straight teeth.

Remind your daughter Eddie how important it is to wear the retainer after the braces come off. The teeth can move back and out of place very quickly.

CLKD
How can braces be about making money when my daughter had this done at the Maxilo Facial dept in hospital.
She had wonderful treatment. My dentist will not do braces and refers to an orthodontist. So no money made by anyone.

Will do HoneyB.
I'm going to dental dept tomorrow,  My friend who took us all to the gig last night is a dentist, we were talking about tomorrow, she told me it doesn't sound like an infection, because of the hot/cold sensation? But more like a fragment of nerve left in that's now dying? Oh joy, more root treatment?? Not looking forward to tomorrow, but it's 9.20, so early enough.

I love my new Water Pik.  I use electric toothbrush and now use a water pik after and I cannot believe the residual - I love blueberries and the brush doesn't get all out.  I also use the tongue thingy and the bit of thrush I had way back where I can't see it has cleared and my voice isn't raspy anymore.  It is a wonderful gadget.

I hate  my veneers - six upper front - first and last thing I am ever doing cosmetically.  They've been replaced twice and that was in the first two months.  Hate them!  If this is TMI - sorry, but I still love my Pik.

Here is an article not just about heart disease but also poor memory associated with tooth loss http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/features/how-flossing-can-save-your-life-1975548.html

I don't know whether you think that "tribal people" don't have bad teeth CLKD or heart disease. Do you picture them with dazzling white smiles and no disease?

Your Pik sounds interesting Taylor.

I cannot use tongue scrapers/cleaners. They make me retch. I have tried and tried with no success. I just cant do it.

I have an electric toothbrush which I love. I got it at Xmas as my old one was dying and to start with I thought this one was going to rumble my teeth out  ;D

My gums are so much better on HRT. Gums receding and bleeding was a real problem for me and now its just fine. I did not get the connection until Taz mentioned it and then the penny dropped. My lady bits might be drying up and falling off, but my gums are great.  ;)

I had to have a brace when I was a child and my teeth were better than before it but no where near as good as with the modern ones. I have finally started to floss regularly and after many years of fillings, haven't had to have one for ages so it must be doing some good. My teeth are quite crooked though, very tight between them so can only use the expensive tape - anything else gets stuck and with sensitive gums, that's horrible. Like Honeyb, they are better since being on HRT though.
Electric toothbrushes are brill - dentist told me to get one several years ago and teeth feel so much cleaner.
I've read about the connection with heart disease before - much rather do some flossing than have that!

Circulation in the gum area goes to brain and heart.  Pimples around the bottom and top of nose can go to brain if pressed hard or get infected.  (I do it anyway - very carefully).

I first learned here about the connection of HRT and gums - thanks Taz.

Honeyb - grab some Estrace (estradiol cream) and dab a bit on and you will stop dryness and prevent atrophy and recent study (with blood work and endometrial biopsies) show unbelievably little absorption.  Now I know Larky disagrees and oddly I think I may agree with Larky as if I use a bunch I seem to get more visual aura migraines, but the study seems valid, too.  All I truly know is that it helps me and I use very darn little - just dab it on - no applicator.  If you keep up the lining that is formed from new youthful (ha) cells then the absorption is felt not to happen - if you hit and miss than is it felt to happen.  I'm blotto today - very little sleep.

Honeyb, where is your self control of the gag reflex?  I'm thinking I'm going to have endoscopy possibly again and wondering if I could possibly do what others have - last time was 'uinder' for the procedure.

I feel badly for your daughter - hope she'll feel encouraged that it will all be worth it.

As for my gag reflex..... all I can say is that it works very well thanks  ;)

Its hopeless. I cant even hold a pencil in my mouth without gagging.
I also had an endoscopy but was sedated. All I remember was the sound of "someone" gagging.
That would have been me  ;)
I am a lost cause.

Why do you need another endoscopy Taylor. Are things not good for you at the moment.

Hi HB, I'm neurotic.  Grandmother died of stomach cancer.  I have had stomach problems all my life.  Lately more, but found that I have trigger points in my main abdominal muscles and have every symptom this super authority on Myofascial Release and trigger point doctor describes as muscular problems mimicing stomach problems.  I worsened it by putting wedge in bed and also pillow under knees so I was lying all night with shortened abs - due to the angle created by the wedge and pillows for what I thought was reflux (never had heartburn).  So that made things worse so we'll see what getting rid of the trigger points does - I even have the exact diagrammed pain across the entire middle of my back when I breathe deeply.

I've had three fatal diagnoses - all obviously wrong- and because of those - I've become a bit of a nut and hate to go to doc as they keep getting it wrong.  Had scope three years ago and he said come back in ten years - I was a bit inflamed but all biopsies negative.  I'd be ok if I were still playing tennis and working out, but ..............think I'll go play with my bunny - does that sound neurotic - perhaps, but who cares?

Oh well back from Dental dept, not much further on, no sign of infection, he said def not nerve pain, so to have the apisectomy in 6-8 weeks, he said i've not had any root canal treatment done so only 70-75% sure it will be success.

Also have to wait 6-8 months after this before i can get any more work done, because if it's not successful he thinks he will have to try and do root treatment and the posts are heavily cemented in that they will break.

He also explained why i had an anxiety attack the last tiem, apparently sometimes a small amount of the anesthetic can get into blood stream and cause the heart to race and feel just how i felt. I saw a film once about people inducing a heart attack by doing this. Not a happy bunny right now.

Sounds miserable, Eddie, I am sorry you haven't had some sort of solution to your problem.

I had a few months, think it was 3, last year when I had mouth/gum/tooth pain.  Found it difficult to exactly pin it down and describe it to the dentist and went backwards and forwards for quite some time.   He basically filed down a couple of my teeth as he thought I might be out of alignment and it did eventually calm down although have no idea if it just went by itself as I had been convinced it was nerve pain.   Even had what I am sure was a pointless filling as he initially thought it was caused by a small crack in the base of a tooth.
Do hope your problem improves.

Hi Eddie, my step son is a dentist and once I went 'off the wall' with the adrenalin (epinephrine) added to the numbing anesthetic.  Heart pounding and felt I would go unconscious.  The dentist can lower the amount (and should).  It's given to constrict the local blood vessels and reduce bleeding, but it is not necessary and at least can be given in greatly reduced amounts - Always remind the dentist and put it on your allergy sheet - 'sensitive to epinephrine' and then that won't be a worry.

Hi Ladies

I've had problems with increased heartrate after dental anaesthetic for years......

I became very aware of it when I was on a certain type of AD, which required a low dose adrenaline anaesthetic.  Was fine on this alternative but suffered terribly once I had stopped the AD and reverted to normal anaesthetic :( Previous dentists thought that my high heart rate was down to anxiety but I knew it wasn't....

Pleased to say that my current dentist (Private - Not NHS,) is very happy to give me an anaesthetic which does not give me the same problems :)  I'm not very keen on visiting my dentist, (Well who is??!!) but I now have confidence in knowing that I'm not going to suffer with a rapid heartrate afterwards!  (Saying that -not had any work in the past 5 years ;D)

Hubby had a bridge for years without problems. Then it began to discolour.  The needle points are still sore enough to need Nurofen  >:( but generally I feel better most of the time.  Thanks for the support too  :foryou: ALL.  These sutures are supposed to dissolve  :-\ ....... I had dissolving stitches when I had a cesarean. They did not dissolve and I ended up taking them out myself with a pair of tweezers  :o

I would not think that would be a good idea for inside your mouth though  ;)

Glad you are much improved CLKD. It must be nice to get back to normal for a while.

Shan't  ;) - ought to, gums are sore and I have a painful tooth on the other side now.  Going to ring the Surgery later for advice.  Not on ABs any more so that pain round the belly button has gone!

I had a long chat with the Nurse who knows my mouth and will go for the sutures out on Tuesday and the Dentist will check the painful tooth on the other side at the same time.  I've only lost 1lb this week, despite not eating properly  ::) and cycling ........

I have a dental question and this seemed to be the place to post.

Daughter was at dentist today for three fillings. She was given 4 full injections and while she was in the chair I had the feeling all was not well. I asked her a few times if she was ok and she did respond to me. It was not until I got her outside that she told me the world had gone a bit funny. The room was fuzzy and the dentists voice was very far away. The dentist had to stop drilling because it was painful and she said she could not give her any more injections. The tooth is now dressed and patched and she will have to start again.
When she came home she went to bed and has slept for about four hours.
Obviously four injections were too many for someone of her size. We will tell the dentist but I am concerned this will happen again. Is there another option in the type of local anesthetic they can use?
Has anyone else had this happen to them.

HoneyB, i've already said about my funny turn at dentist, i thought i was going to have a heart attack. Maybe the adrenalin was too much, or as the dentist at the hospital told me it could leak into the blood. Hope she feels better, is this her first main filling with anesthetic? Eddie. x

Hi Eddie

No she has had fillings and extractions before but this is the first time she has had so many injections at the one time. The dentist said she will give five full injections to an adult and four to a child of her age (tall but very very skinny).
She was also talking about giving her the same amount next time but just for this one tooth, and its way too much.

She had some macaroni cheese at 6pm and has slept until now. Came down stairs for a drink and is now asleep again. Thats not normal surely.

My hubby passed out after having dental work done, he had four or five fillings, he ended up in hospital, they said it was shock from the jags. He actually collapsed in our living room, he was out cold for a few minutes and we had to call 999, who carted him off. Eddie. x

Well I have to say daughter did not look great at all. She was very very pale and she said that her school shirt was stuck to her back with sweat. I think I will call and speak to the dentist before we go back so I can tell her honestly what happened. Daughter would be embarrassed if the conversation was in front of her (you know what they are like at this age)

Did they give the injection time to work, i know that's why it has adrenalin in it, to speed it up, but maybe it still needed time rather than more anesthesia? Def try to find out before next trip. Eddie. x

You might have a look at this.  Dentist can give anesthetic injection without epinephrine.  Scary.  I had it once and my head started buzzing and I thought I was going unconscious.  Took hours to become ok.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a603002.html#side-effects

This one is total about DENTAL INJECTION:
http://www.drugs.com/pro/xylocaine-dental.html

The dentist needs to aspirate (withdraw with plunger to be sure not into a blood vessel) or give NO epi.

Recently I had 4 injections - it depends on where the work is to be done as to which nerves need to be dulled so I had 2 into the bottom gum and 1 in the top of the tooth area and another in the roof of the mouth.  Because of the medication I am on he was unable to top it up towards the end of the treatment and it was like having a swarm of bees in my mouth every time he sutured.

I think you should have a talk with the dentist and explain how DD was after treatment so that if necessary, another local anaesthetic can be used.

http://www.dentalfearcentral.org/fears/allergy-novacaine/

This is a good article, explaining what the vast majority are allergic or sensitive to in dental injections.  It seems that it is not epinephrine that causes true allergy, but instead other components of the injection.  But epi side effects are the probable cause of most reactions in my thinking.  So the question is: Side effects or true allergy?

My biggest reaction was buzzing in the head and feeling of going unconscious so mine WAS an epi side effect.

So the question is: is one reacting to components in the injection or is one having a 'normal' side effect of the injection.  I get my anesthetic without epi and do fine, so mine was side effect, not allergy per se.

Hmmm it's not good at the minute. I need to go back to the doc to have some more of the sealant put around the gum. I have never paid much attention to the "shrinking gums" news but now I realise how painful it makes your teeth. I have started on Sensodyne - better late than never. Thank you for asking as it has made me think about it more and I will phone the dentist tomorrow.

Sometimes Taz it doesnt matter how good you take care of your teeth
I was fine till I had baby boy Id had 2 fillings in my life
Within 9 months of his birth I had 9 fillings with in 6 years of his birth id had 8 teeth out(all the filled ones and 1 more)
I brushed and still do brush 2 sometimes 3 a day I floss after and sometimes between meals
I use Sensodyne and have done for years now I use the new one Rapid
I had all my mercry filllings removed mind only had 3 and had amalgum then when I could afford it I had them replaced with porcelin
My dentist told me a few years ago about gum shrinkage when I had my titanium implant (never again)
The needle here in Ozz is the epidural or Block injection they put it at the back of your mouth by the end of lower jaw or top
Depends on upper or lower teeth being done now OK the needle is huge and it does OUCH but after 2 mins
Well lets just say they could do open surgery and youd not feel it I had my wisdom tooth taken out this way and it was bust in half
I had the root can done this way too I didnt feel anything as your awake they are more careful not to be rough so not much swelling
We as a family have Private Dental cos in Ozz theres abso NO national health dental service you pay or nothing not even for kids
So for all its pains and waits thank god for the Ntional Health sevice and I hope evryone with paining teeth and appts to come xxxx

Nope, unless I know I need driving home.  His tooth is broken so the root canal treatment has changed to extraction next week.  I talked to the Dentist about my 'other' tooth and we decided after a lot of phaffing on my part, that it will be removed on Friday.  It seemed the quicker option than sitting in that chair being drilled, refilled, drilled and re-fitted  ::)

Mine are still not good. Have got a lot of sensitivity even though I am using the sensodyne toothpaste. I am trying to get an appointment to have the original painful one looked at again as I think the sealant they put around the gum has failed and I am getting pain with hot or cold food and drinks. The gums themselves are much better now that I am back on HRT but this peridontal disease isn't very nice! CLKD, I so hope you will be well soon.  I think the flouride in our water saved all the teeth in US, but at what cost as many consider it poison.  Our son, the dentist, says he and others see few cavities and most go into cosmetic dentistry to survive.  I can't use flouride toothpaste any longer as I get recurring canker sores.

Hope you feel better soon CLKD. My dentist wont touch anything that has infection in until a five day course of antibiotics has been given. I have had that scraping out of the root canal thingy but I was given antibiotics to begin immediately after it. It was painful for the first day or so. My dentist advised two nurofen as soon as possible and then to take two tablets every six hours or so (up to the maximum daily dose) for at least three days. It worked.

I think I am right in thinking what you call a canker sore is what we would call an ulcer. My kids had them constantly when they were younger. I tried everything to stop this happening. I eventually discovered that some people have a sensitivity to one of the foaming ingredients in toothpaste. Its called Sodium Lauryl Sulphate [sp]. I have found quite a few toothpastes that dont contain it. Once they stopped using this all the problems went. They still however can use fluoride.

Hi HB, thanks.  I read about that ingredient, I think in a Colgate product and something about it maybe being not good - my memory leaves me -.  I use a natural toothpaste now that has neither that ingredient or flouride, but I notice my teeth are not as white (even though my natural paste includes sodium bicarb and papain) so now and then I use whitening strips with heavy peroxide.  Called recurring anthous ulcers - very worrisome at first as no pain and that usually means auto immune disease, but I found the paper on flouride and the ulcer left in a few days, and did not recur until I tried flouride again as a test.  Thank you for your post.

ps: our dentists here complain that almost no one has cavities and have not had in twenty years because of flouride, but there have been many movements to get it out of our water.  I don't trust all our regulations anymore when I see how drug plants are inspected (not!).

Hope you are both feeling better CLKD.

I suffered with the most vile mouth ulcers for years & was getting them every 2 weeks. I changed the mouth wash I use to one that doesn't contain alcohol and that seems to have done the trick - hardly ever get one now :)

Foxy: have read that using a B12 tablet (the kind you are to dissolve under tongue) but using it right against the ulcer really helps.  I just let the tablet stay until it dissolves as the ulcer was between the back of jaw and cheek and it would stay.  Glad you found the culprit - my mouthwash also had flouride in it.

Don't use VitB12 if you are taking certain anti-depressant medication!

My Dentist rang to check my situation yesterday and was prepared to see me in the afternoon or this morning if necessary. Pain is background, I took medication at 3.25 a.m. and slept soundly from 4.00 p.m. [heard the Church clock so know it was from then]. Absolutely no idea what is causing this pain in the cheek.  He is seeing me again on tuesday unless the situation deteriorates.

Yee gads, CLKD, I had that and it is the worst non fatal pain many say.  Mine was finally called atypical facial neuralgia and I was scheduled for a trigeminal nerve ablation.  But, miracles of miracles, it finally got better.  Also they called them cluster headaches.  Have they damaged a nerve?  If so, hopefully it will heal in time - lots of time.  I took self hypnosis classes to learn to 'control' the pain.  Oddly, when done with meno, it got better.
I sure hope you do not have this.  I had it for years from, I'm guessing 35-55.  Wouldn't wish it on anyone. I also had one pupil that blew (turned eye completely black) and they diagnosed brain tumor and it was a reaction to the brain scan dye i think.  It got better over time.  Gosh, being an old battle ax, I have had a few things.  This is one I'd just as soon forget.  Hope it is just swelling on the nerve and that it will go away!  Sorry.

Taylor I had this in the 1990s but can't remember which side of the face.  Looking at the UK Support web-site there's lots of gloom and doom as to how medications do/don't work.  One reputadly gives a 'life threatening rash' to some sufferers  :o :o  ..... WTF!

Fortunately, either the spasms are getting fewer and/or the Nurofen is controlling the pain better.  It is excruciating, I was crawling along the lounge floor yesterday waiting for the meds to kick in.  I've stopped the ABs as I could no longer bear the heartburn; it was that or stop eating and as a recovering anorexic [see other thread] .......

Hey Ho! we've been shopping for more Nurofen but only allowed 2 packets a day from Tesco  ::)

How are you getting on with them Susan? The first time I took them I had no real ill effects apart from thrush in the mouth but the second time I came out in a really itchy rash as my body recognised it and sent out warnings. I can't have it now. One good side effect though was that my fungal toenail infection has begun to clear for the first time in years!

CLKD - how many nurofen are you taking if you need to buy more than two packets at a time  :o

CLKD, I woke up at 3am and thought of your pain.  I think I want to share something that may sound crazy, but honestly it might help.  There are trigger points (tiny contracted tissue within muscles or fascia) at the base of your skull for head/face pain (found everywhere in body for other stuff) that if you press with your finger tips will be sore and will send shooting pains to the area behind your eye, in your temple, on your cheek bone.  TPs (trigger points) cause referred pain.  One day a physical therapist was trying to work with my bad neck and she hit this point and I was really shook up as it was the exact pain pattern I had.  I saw the neurosurgeon and cancelled my surgery.  The TPs recur, especially after dental work.

TMJ is also totally involved.  It is like which comes first chicken or egg or whatever the heck it is.

So please massage the back of your head, bottom of skull and if you find a sore spot, press it in and hold seven seconds and gently release, followed by a warm wash cloth or towel.  You can also roll your knuckles across your forehead, cheek bone and find same TPs.  Wherever you find them - same thing - press and hold and release and warmth cloth.  Press hard enough to hurt..

I wonder if I can copy and paste to pm.  I think I tried and can't once before.  I'll try and find a link for here.
http://books.google.com/books/about/The_Trigger_Point_Therapy_Workbook.html?id=IYqqY5Ae_VoC

Google books usually lets you read a lot of pages, unlike Amazon.

Anyhow, please try and maybe I can get some sleep tonight.

Good Heavens, Susan, not to worry.  I blather on and don't expect responses.  Just wish we'd all get to feeling good.  I'm getting an inversion table to use very, very mildly 20 degrees max as physical therapist tried me on one and it gave some relief.

Well the world didn't end OR is it possible we are the "Left Behind".  Oh my, too much to ponder.

Thanks for the info everyone.  We were shopping so stocked up on Nurofen, we usually buy it in packs of 50 ....... I notice the good effect doesn't last as long in the day-time, probably as I'm moving around more.  No obvious triggers yet.  Only background throbbing which isn't painful as well as altered sensation over the whole cheek which feels huge but on looking in the mirror, appears normal  ::) now that I know the pain can be controlled I feel less anxious.  It's such a busy week for us, Himself retires on Friday so we have 'dos' to attend which would be anxiety making under normal circumstances  >:(

I'm really disappointed, when i got there the girl doing the procedure took me aside and told me it only had a 20% chance of fixing the problem, she said that because the tooth hasn't had root treatment the chances are the infection is coming from what she thought was a very fine fracture to the root, which would naturally be full of infection. So i've been referred back to dentist, then referral to Glasgow dental hospital, which will probably take a few more months. I'm really gutted, wasn't looking forward to it anyway, but just want it fixed.

I had really bad trouble with a tooth for about 5 years, back and forth to dentist, root filling, last year it flared up so much I asked to have it taken out. It took 2 hours and I was in agony even with localized numbing. Since then the tooth next to it has become painful and loose, but I'm so scared to go back.

Hi Susan - I see that, before, you were taking metronizadole (sp?) and I wondered what type of abscess you have? The metro antibiotic is used for anaerobic bacteria and amoxycillin doesn't touch these sorts of infections. Well, that's what my dentist told me when I had a gum abscess and she was proved right!

Sounds difficult Susan. Mine was in the gum and these type are anaerobic so need the metro so that they are starved of oxygen. I had to have a two week course of metro for it to work.

Susan: 'grind you down'.  What a horrible pun!  Seriously, is there any way the dentist or your gp can culture the area and find out what the infection will respond to??  Seems logical somehow, but I've never heard of a dental infection culture.  Dental infections are always serious because of, as Taz said, the anaerobic aspects are the real troublesome issues.  I feel so badly for you and CLKD and others.  Do you do salt water and peroxide rinses.  Peroxide does go down and gets the more superficial anaerobes (where the peroxide can get below the gum line).  3% peroxide (in US) is used as a gargle and I've done it a thousand times - never swallow.  I use salt water when I am not using peroxide - not used together.

Peroxide is better for anaerobic.  I think chlorhexidene is the wash you have.  I use similar rarely.  Are you taking probiotics to avoid yeast infection?

Susan: it's over the counter here, usually with the rubbing alcohol.  Taz is so right on the tablets and the strength difference.  It really can help prevent yeast as the ABs are destroying good bacteria in the gut as well as bad and the gut is primarily responsible for our immune system.  It will not interfere with the action of most ABs, but you might look it up - some ABs don't like dairy products.  All my docs advise taking the probiotics though, but I always have to caution and be careful not to prescribe..........................................as I ain't no doc.  Hope you get to feeling better.

Hi Susan, I use 3% peroxide as a rinse (it is also the main ingredient in whitening strips for teeth) and I am astounded at the cost for you.  In US a pint of just the liquid peroxide is less than $1.00USD. (.61 pound)  Must be the other ingredients.  It is often used by itself to clean out under the gums and it says to dilute with water although I do not.  I certainly don't swallow any.  We used to clean wounds with peroxide in the hospital, but now they prefer normal saline (salt water).  So glad you are feeling better.

Well done for going to the dentist loveydovey - my mum was pretrified of them, and spent years and years avoiding treatment. Things have improved so much though, treatment-wise  :).

I haven't read the whole thread, but going back to something on the first page... I mentioned to my dental nurse (while she was scale-and-polishing) that my gums seem to bleed more easily these days and I'd read it might be hormonal. She totally poo-poo'd it! It is totally down to cleaning, according to her. Well, she is correct that good cleaning can help reverse it, but it takes a lot more 'good cleaning' from perimeno onwards! Hmm... she's only young and has a way to go yet  ;)

Well, my gums are definitely better since I've been on HRT and when I mentioned it to my dental hygenist (sp?) she didn't disagree and said that it was an interesting point. Others on here have mentioned improvement with HRT too. That's not a reason to be on it, of course but does point to the fact that hormones have an effect, whether good or bad.

They referred me for a procedure to rid the infection in March, but when i went i was informed it was root treatment i needed and they didn't do it. Argh, makes me mad, it will be nearly a year waiting.
I take it your first implant has settled well?

Think it might be different up here. We had to go private years ago, so don't have this problem.  But I have friends who have had root treatment under the NHS.  There was a Channel 4, here is the link, about treatments.  Hope it's ok to post this link.

I am so glad we still have our NHS dentist. Although not everything is covered (you still have to make a contribution) its not as expensive as private.

I hate root canal. My tooth now feels fine although the temporary filling is a little rough and I am dreading setting the whole thing off again when they start messing. :(

You will need to take quite a few ABs before they have a chance of working.

Good luck and I hope it feels better soon.

Maybe it is different in other countries LoveyDovey   ???  .......... thanks Eddie, my first implant felt like a huge foreign body in the gob for about 2 weeks now I don't notice it unless I feel below par when that and the crowned tooth feel 'full'.  Have to decide when to get the 2nd implant done!

You've had to wait such a long time  >:(

Oh so why is my dentist telling me it's a specialist thing (root canal treatment).
He does'nt do it, i did ask, but he says i have to go somewhere else, and it would cost a couple of hundred   Loveydovey - the standard cost of treatment for root canal work on the NHS is £204. You won't pay more than that. There is a list here of the prices charged for NHS work. It is not specialist work it is part of normal dentistry. My son has just had a root canal done on the NHS and I have had a couple done too.   http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1781.aspx?CategoryID=74&SubCategoryID=74

You will need to take quite a few ABs before they have a chance of working.

When I've been given ABs by dentist it has been in powder form, 2 doses to be mixed in water.  Very strong stuff and messes my gut up big time, but works quickly.

There is a homeopathic remedy that was recommended by my dentist.

Its called Hepar Sulph and works really well at calming an abscess.

It might be worth a try if you have to wait a while for an appointment.

Finally got seen at our local dental hospital, i thought i would get all the work needed done there, but no. They are only interested in whether they can save the root, they will not do root canal treatment, this will have to be done at my own dentist with a cost of upto £395. They will remove the posts (2) examine the cavity with a microscope and re-do the posts if possible, then send me back to my own dentist! This sounds a bit bizarre. But she def said the root is in a bad way and nothing else can be done about it, so she reckons 2 months and hopefully this discomfort will be gone.

I've lost 3 teeth over a number of years.  Due in part to dentist I had at that time.  I have also got 3 lovely crowns from a later dentist who cared.  Much as implants would be nice for my gap, they are so expensive.  I dread false teeth though! Maybe I could just get one for my most obvious one which is my first molar beside my eye tooth.  I  never open my mouth when I smile these days as I'm so self conscious!  Hubby has lost so many more than me but fortunately still has nice ones at the front.  I'm a coward though and my dentist has just changed so don't know what he'll be like.   :-\

I am simply not brave enough (nor rich enough)......but even if I had the money I just could not go through that.

I will no doubt have to suffer the extractions over the years but at the moment except for my crowns I have all my own teeth.

Long may that last.

I really admire anyone who can undergo such a big dental procedure.

I am going this route in order to save my remaining teeth.  As it was explained to me 2 years ago that bone needs something to grip onto, to work against in order not to recede so implants do the job of a tooth: at least the titanium rod will do.  The 1st one took without lasting problems, now I need to get over these anti-biotics and mouth wash days and once those bits of rope are out  ::) which when I look in the mirror as only thin stitches ..........

I will tell the Dentist that he needs to discuss ABs before the patient is numbed up  ;) because I have never been asked whether I take a full course: or not.

you need to get some different antibiotics then CLKD especially if you still have pain where the needle went in. You don't want to risk a bone infection! I am sure that you do need to take a course of antibiotics after such work

CLKD, just now catching up on your implant work.  Don't know if this helps, but have a close friend undergoing implants with receding bone problems due to osteoporosis medicine and she has been on Cleocin or clindamhcin for six weeks.  So I suppose long term ABs is not unusual.  I hope you get an AB that agrees and that you feel much better soon.

The dentist i saw this week said that they have prob made the infection worse with all the tugging etc to try to remove it and they have prob fractured the root causing the infection to grow, and now the only way to guarantee to get rid of the infection will be to lose the tooth.

Does anyone know what the symptoms of tooth access are?  I have had sensitivity hot and cold in my tooth for several months. Can't eat ice-cream at all. It has now started throbbing very slightly?  My dentist said it was where the gum has receded, but it has on some of my other teeth without any problems? I have tried all the various toothpastes and it is now aching all the time and wonder if it is an abcess. Surely there would be pus and a temperature  and dreadful pain if it was?:-X  mY Dentist is on holiday until I go to see him at the end of November. He is going to treat it then.  Flippin' heck I never had any problems with my teeth and now I have several problems with 3 of them!  As it is have to wear a mouth guard for grinding at night, very flattering - but better than dentures. ;D

I find that continual use of Sensodyne helps - because the gums recede it allows cold air, debris and stuff to get into the gum which can cause infection or sensitivity.

Thats interesting - I didn't realise that.  I did think about going back to the NHS to get it extracted as the private dentist won't do that, but there is a huge waiting list - apparently?!  Anyway, i have been and  it was awful, because there is an abcess starting and the tooth is being rejected.  The dentist drilled it as much as he could but I have to go back after antibiotics to have more 'root canal' work done.  Was in tears afterwards, because I have been to the dentist several times as an emergency, and he said it was the root recession..  I wish I had asked him to X-ray it before, so I went in there and said i want him to X-ray all my teeth in case there is anymore decay in any of them.  I feel frustrated and annoyed that he missed it and feel like complaining, but can't really whilst he's doing the treatment and trying to get me out of pain. :(
Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!
Post by: CLKD on November 07, 2012, 09:41:16 PM
Has he missed a diagnosis?  Maybe with age-related gum recession it allowed bacteria in - but maybe it wouldn't have done so ........ so rather than do un-necessary work?  This is something you need to talk with your Dentist about, to get this clear in your mind.  Why wouldn't your Private Dentist take out the tooth ..........  :-\ dentistry is dentistry - I go to an NHS Practice and some things I pay extra for, i.e. my implants.  Clean and polish and yearly check up I get 'free'.
Title: Re: Dental abscess and not finished the shopping yet!
Post by: pixie on November 08, 2012, 07:28:07 AM
Its because they try to 'save' the tooth, and yes I think he might've missed a diagnosis, because he should have x-rayed the tooth ages ago.

Tooth feeling ok, since root canal.  Round two of the dentist comming up on Monday morning.  Next is the bottom tooth that broke in half on the broccoli, last week.  Not painful, but filling hanging out a bit!  Crown prep will begin.  Not as petrified as when I had R C, but nonetheless not totally chuffed at the thought either!  :-X

Must admit CLKD, i haven't been able to eat any ice cream, as I was in such pain.  Its improved since the root canal.  Good luck for you and himself on Tuesday! What have you both got to have done this time? 8)

I get my new crown to put over the implant and Himself needs a 'small' filling .........

Phew.....crown prep done, and drilling over for now.  It didn't hurt a bit, but drill always makes me shake!  Pleased with my temporary crown.  Bryan Ferry was on the TV singing during it, so not too bad. ;)  Mouth still numb.
Got to go back and have one more canal done in the one that was root filled the other day. :(

Good luck tomorrow CLKD! I hope you are pleased with your new tooth and that himself satisfied with his filling.  I was impressed how they do the colour match for the teeth.  The dentist had a long row of teeth from white to yellow to hold against my other teeth.  Quite interesting, but not something I'd like to do regularly!! :)

Hi CLKD, Sounds like your implants are a success. I finally had my front tooth removed in November and a temporary plate made up. Absolutely hate it, doesn't fit well at all and can't speak or eat with it in. So in Feb i  have my check-up and hopefully start a course of treatment with root canal treatment, two new crowns and then a bridge between them. Eddie. x

Both implants are settling well, in fact, i can't feel either.  The gap between my bottom teeth R give me problems, grub gets caught and sets up inflammation so I have to go in with a lot of pushing and prodding  >:(  ::)

Must make an appt for a general check up, due end of April  :-\

Was told at my check up that I wasn't cleaning properly  :o - smacked wrists, had to see the Hygenist. She told me to do: everything that I was already doing  ::) but I am taking more care with the inbetween bits.

DH is undergoing implants soon  :-X

My implants are pricey but the dentist is doing a good job, his team are very supportive and as I am his 'first' patient he is, in effect, practicing on me  :o  ;) ………… having the implants means that my jaw has something to work against, pretty similar to brisk walking to stave off osteoporosis.  If the tooth is present the jaw won't recede therefore I won't lose other teeth!

This saves me repeating myself  ;)

I would have another if necessary.

3 implants @ £1,500 each-ish ……...

No chance of me affording an implant I'm afraid - it will have to be either false teeth or gaps!

It is cosmetic surgery - though I would argue that if patients are treated with implants, they will need less 'work' anyway!  as it saves the teeth becoming loose and dropping out.  I think I would prefer to be gummy rather than suffer the embarrassment of dentures  ;) ……… I would never remember where they were each morning  ;D

My hubby has a bridge at the bottom and a partial plate on top. Why would anyone have to be gummy or have gaps when both of the options are available. Not quite sure I understand that.

£4500 for teeth. I have spent less on a car. Sorry but that's outrageous. Not many people could even consider that. But the main thing that really puts me off apart from the cost is the fact you need donated bone.....from a cadaver. No thanks....in that instance I really would go gummy.

;D ……. doesn't bother me as I'm a donor anyway and believe in 'recycling'  ;)

For the sake at my age of not losing any more teeth because of gum shrinkage it's money well spent.  Also if I spend it on my teeeef, the Government don't gets it  :D

Also, lots of people are 'going for implants' particularly younger people.  It can be performed under the NHS if there's been an accident, assault etc..

A lot of people go abroad to have it done Turkey for instace it's much cheaper. I know some who have and are very happy with treatment and results.

If I could afford it, then yes. I've got 3 crowns which won't last forever. Friend spent £2,000 having hers done, but had terrible anxiety problems. Said never again.

I didn't ask about the donor part.  As for going abroad  :o - all I can say is that the patients were very very lucky because the body can perceive the titanium 'stem' as a foreign body - which is why UK dentists wait a while before fitting the rest of the tooth.  In case there is a reaction, rare but there is a possibility.

I had NO anxiety at all.  At least not once the dentist had pulled one of the teeth which needed to come out but was in at such an angle the LA ran out  :o  ;) ……… at 58 I could not face a plate and in order to save the other teeth, opted for implants.

Bone in the jaw line needs teeth in order to 'work' and maintain bone density: i.e. when we chew it activates the jaw line - if there is a gap then the jaw doesn't get the down beat to keep it healthy.  Bit like brisk walking exercise for other bones!  If the jaw doesn't maintain it's density then gum recedes and teeth fall out  :o

Update on tooth woes.....I didn't realise there was a dental thread! Thanks CLKD... Lots of info and links but haven't had a chance to read it - I don't think I need it now anyway as the dilemma doesn't exist...

Well I narrowly missed having the wrong tooth out on Tuesday!!! So glad I declined the dentists's offer to do it there and then, as it was the wrong tooth!!!!!!

I thought it was one I had had root canal treatment on 10 years ago ( maybe longer) - but couldn't understand why as this one is dead. After the anti-biotics worked I realised it was probably the next one to it causing the problem ( which is mainly filling) and dentist confirmed it yesterday! Slightly worrying that I would have had a gap and having to decide what to do unnecessarily and very expensively probably....

Honeybun I couldn't have had a bridge because the teeth either side are poor (the dentists calls us the heavy metal generation - teeth full of fillings), so it would have been gap (not good structurally), plate or implant. So glad I don't have to think about this now!

Anyway dentist says he can do root canal treatment but I have to have a crown (the one next to it doesn't have a crown as they didn't do them in those days - I wasn't offered one. It's still going to be expensive but at least the canal is on NHS and I am paying slightly more to have a more realistic crown as the tooth is visible.

Hoping it (the tooth) will all last out until January which is next appt (for root canal) - as I can't actually chew on that side now!!! Don't know if infections recur?

Need some support from all the lovely ladies on this thread who have faced and conquered difficulties with teeth.  I have severe bone loss and need to lose two teeth lower front.  Am going to check on bone graft for implant, otherwise its dentures.   Need some positive stories!!

Hi well I haven't got bone loss but I had to have a tooth out (upper - half way round) in January and the teeth next to it aren't strong enough for a bridge, and the gap is very annoying as food keeps getting stuck (peanuts etc) so I am going for the implant. Also because of the gap I'm eating mostly on the other side which is also putting extra stress on the (not very good) teeth there too! Unfortunately not available on NHS and eye-wateringly expensive but worth it to help preserve the other teeth if I'm going to live for a few years longer. I've only had the preliminary appointment so far but dentist says it's OK for implant which I'm having in July (eek!).

I presume you're not on HRT hence the bone loss? If so, depending on how long since menopause it might be worth asking for a bone scan to check your general bone health too?

I know others have had implants so hopefully they will let you know too!

If you already have bone loss in the jaw area which is resulting in lost teeth …… the only person who can advise is your Dental Surgeon who, if he doesn't 'do' implants, must refer you to a Specialist Oral Surgeon who does.  It is a step above 'ordinary' dental treatment and not available on the NHS.

My dentist advised that I could have a plate on the NHS or implants.  He asked a colleague already qualified as an implant surgeon to have a look-see at my bone density.  All was OK so the latter Dentist began treatment (long story short  ::)).  I have 3.  Can't even remember where they are except when I have to do good oral hygiene several times daily.  The gums etc. have to be kept healthy so that the implant remains stable.  Do not let anyone convince you that this procedure can be 'done in a day'! 'cos it takes 9-12 months for each titanium pin to implant into the bone.  Should something go wrong with the procedure [highly unlikely] then it is easier to remove the pin - if a person has the whole process in 1 day and the body rejects any part of the procedure, it is a lot harder and more expensive to take out the whole implant.

CLKD I'm having my implant done in July and dentist thinks I could have the false tooth around Christmas time so a bit shorter timescale than 9-12 months. However I had to wait 4 months from having tooth out, to have my mouth X-rayed and assessed for whether implant would be advisable.

I am having my first assessment in early June - 10 weeks since tooth out, dentist reckons about 9 months in total.  I will need bone graft for front teeth though, and will get him to check on that when I go in June.
