Title: Gahhhh this Mirena spotting (still !)
Post by: Nas on August 07, 2022, 11:04:26 AM
Calling all Mirena users,
Mirena has been in best part of 10 weeks and I’m still spotting.
TMI sorry, but it’s dark and stringy and can resemble tar.
It’s driving me mad now .

If i have the coil removed, I’m back to bleeding monthly or at best, 3 weekly weekly with cramps and pmt.

It seems I can’t do without systemic HRT, due to VA and bladder issues.

Just to add, no amount of vagifem and ovestin deals with the VA.
It has to be systemic AND local Oestrogen.

What to do?    ::)

I’m 4 years post menopause for the record.

Hi Nas, I have heard of people spotting for a year or more with Mirena before it finally settled down, so early days still. If you can put up with it and you are starting to feel well then you could carry on as you are. I had one and after ten months of spotting finally gave up and had it removed. But.., for me the spotting was causing anxiety and so it just wasn't worth the worry.

Thanks Gnatty
Yes, it’s early days and better than the frequent bleeding prior to having it fitted. I’m not bothered about the spotting from a health clinic perspective; it’s just an annoyance really. Stop start spotting.

I’ve also chopped and changed HRT dose and type quite a bit over the last ten days, so it might even be that!

Nas, give it till 6 months.

I haven't had a coil fitted but I have been on continuous progestin several times (levonorgestrel and desogestrel) and both times I got many months of slow dark spotting - really dark - before it finally stopped completely.

You're nearly halfway to 6 months, so give it longer...

Hey Nas
I still don't think it's the mirena
I'm back spotting again and I'm sure it's my patches nit the coil

Oh right smarty,
Maybe it’s the patches then.
No idea to be honest.
What are you going to do? How long have you had the coil in?
How long have you been on patches? X

Hi
This particular coil has been in for 9 months and been on estradot for about 6 months
Over all I've had the coil for over 20 years and never had spotting until my patches/tablets were changed

 Mmmm. It’s a tricky one.
I assumed this spotting was coil related ,but it might not be.
I have messed around with my HRT these past 10 days or so though.
Will you continue with the Estradot?

I'd prefer not to but wont see my gp for a while so I'm stuck with it for now
Have you been increasing or decreasing amounts?

It’s tough to know what to do isn’t it?
Will your symptoms return if you stop the patch?

Yes, I’ve been a bit of an idiot as usual  ;D
Increased and decreased in short spaces of time.
My usual dose is a 75 patch. Then I thought I would  experiment with 100 and added a bit of gel. Then decreased again as that was too much.

Stupid I know. X

Hi

I'll take hrt for as long as I can as life's not worth living otherwise  ::)

How did you know it was too high?

Yes I need HRT for VA, so got to take something too.
Well, I was very jittery and angry when I increased.
I’ve been at 75 for 2 years now and thought symptoms were returning.

Going to try and ride this spotting out and stick with 75 again I think.
Then, if symptoms return, increase to 100.

After my first Mirena, i think i had it one year post meno, the spotting lasted for 4.5 months. Really glad i persevered as i need systemic HRT as well as topical for the VA. I had my second one at end of June and just spotted for 2 days, now worried by that! Although GP said it shouldn't last long.

Hi,

I've had my mirena for 15 weeks and spotted for at least 3 months but it seems to have settled now. My bleeding hasn't stopped completely but it seems to have become more like a menstrual cycle but more importantly a thousand times lighter and my cycle seems longer so more respite between bleeds.

I have had mirenas previously and think it settled almost immediately on previous occasions but perhaps my hormones have taken more time to settle as I've aged.

Hope yours settles too. The mirena is the positive of my current regime.

Thanks Emo
I’m hoping things will settle down at some point.
It might be that Oestrogen changes, I’m not sure.
Will try and keep stable for the next few weeks and see what happens.

Mmmm maybe it’s the patches after all.
It’s a bit more than spotting it seems.
God I don’t want to go back to bleeds after having this coil, else that will have to be the end of HRT.

Can mucking around with the hrt, still cause bleeds or spotting, even with a coil?

GRRRHH  :(
