Title: Missed beat palpitations
Post by: Helmsley on October 05, 2020, 03:32:22 PM
Hi everyone
I’ve just joined. I’ve been having awful missed beat palpitations with the odd thud too! It started 18 months ago , got checked out by cardiologist on 24 hour tape but back then it didn’t happen every day and I know it didn’t when on the tape as I can feel them. I’m 50. Periods irregular and heavy. I’ve been referred back to cardiologist for a device that I can use when they happen. It’s so frightening. I had them for 2/3 hours yesterday evening. Anyone else had these for lengths of time? I know some friends have had the odd one with a hot flush but these can go on for ages. Will HRT help? Thanks in advance

I think that palpitations are normal during The Change.

It is scary.  Fortunately I'm never aware of my heart muscle .........

If you put 'heart palpitations' into the search box several threads will come up, I just looked ;-).  Make notes.

Yes this is a common peri/meno symptom and you've done the right thing in getting it checked out. HRT totally stopped them in my case and both times I've come off HRT for a while they've returned.

Thanks Taz
They’re so hard to ignore aren’t they but reassuring to know lots of women are struggling with them and have seen a cardiologist and it turns out all is ok. I can’t believe my GP said palpitations are NOT a symptom of Perimenopause!! Clueless! I’ve also started following Dr Louise Newson on Instagram. Gp and menopause specialist. Very informative. X

My palpitations have stopped completely now I am using HRT. It had got to the point where they were doing weird drug things to increase heart rate etc while you have an echo and all sorts. 3 day tapes and ECGs. Pretty much everything that turned up nothing. Not sure why the GPs dont seem to be able to tie together symptoms of menopause/ post and peri.

Can it be that women’s healthcare isn’t the priority it could be? I have my own feelings on that one.

Ofc I thought I might drop dead at any point which want so pleasant 😂. It would appear that as the HRT has cleared them up that I shall live to fight another day haha.

Hi,

Yes I get this.

I'm new to the forum and listed my symptoms earlier and this is one I missed off.  As you say I can get them for hours at a time and it's the missing beat and then sometimes accompanied by a thud.

I've never had the 24 hour monitor but been to the Dr's twice about it had ECG's and told not to worry.  It appears to be relatively common at this time of life.  I also won't through a period of waking up in the night with the racing heart.

It's no fun and really scary.  I don't know about yours but mine always seem to happen in the evenings which is weird but I guess hormone related.

They are called ectopic beats. HRT stopped mine but I did have the heart monitor etc. just to make sure it was "only" menopause. Info here on palpitations https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heart-palpitations/   and also an article from the British Heart Foundation about how menopause affects the heart which might be interesting https://www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/medical/women/menopause-and-your-heart
