Title: Sore smelly nose
Post by: Penguin99 on September 28, 2020, 11:01:07 PM
hi all, I know it sounds strange but for months I've been getting scabs inside my nose and at times I can smell what seems like gas. It might go for a few days then it comes back. Sorry if this sounds gross but its not dried bogey its sticky at times. Anyone else suffered this? Sometimes I smell it and ask my husband if he can smell it ::) it can seem that strong at times.

Sounds like an infection. If you ring the surgery they can prescribe something.

Get some 'savlon' up there?  Do you use a nasal spray at all?  I found that daily Beconase dried my nostrils something dreadful!

No I don't use sprays, I have tried savlon, sudocrem & germolene, they don't help at all. It sometimes does smell like an infection. Wondered if anyone else had suffered with this?
Thanks ladies

Hi sage, its like a light green, yellow.
I spoke with a gp today  ( not my normal ), to ask for a sick note for my op ive had, she said " you've already had 2 weeks! It was a nightmare getting it so I thought I wont bother, I'll ask my normal gp :(

It sounds like a a bacterial infection, Staphylococcus being the most common. Your immune system is probably able to fight it but if it gets chronic it's better to treat it right away You could ask for Mupirocin Ointment, it's wonderful for nose scabs. I think you'll need a prescription though.

Thanks sage, I've had it for months, it sometimes gets better for a few days and I think its cleared, then it starts again. I'll mention it to my gp next time. I'll google staphylococcus and see if there's anything simple to help.

I had this type of thing earler this year, though not the smell. I got copious nosebleeds with it in the end. Prescription for Naseptin (a cream) sorted it. My advice is to do it now, in case you get the nosebleeds!

I haven't had nosebleeds, thankfully. It started around Xmas time, I know im naughty I should have got it checked  :-\ I did a little googling and it said to rub cider vinegar on it, so I've tried it with a cotton bud, i took off the scab :sick02: and put some on, stung a little but not as bad as I thought. It doesn't seemed to have scabbed again so I'll try this for a couple of days. I have to speak to gp in couple of weeks so if its not cleared I'll ask for prescription.

I have had a very dry, often crusty and sore nose for the last 2 years.  vaseline in a cotton bud helps.  I have read it is not only the vaginal areas that dry up, nasal passages can too!  Uncomfortable for most of the time.  some of the sore crusty places may have got infected?

Savlon does nothing at all. I've been away so not continued the cider vinegar, it did seem to help a bit. I will give it a few days and see how it goes.

Hi Penguin99, I went to ENT a couple of years ago with this as I had been suffering exactly the same as you. Gp had given me Naseptin which helped but it kept coming back after a while.
Blood tests ruled out any allergies and ENT chappie looked up my nose, said no polyps or anything and said was most likely to be non allergenic rhinitis which causes all these symptoms. He prescribed nasal spray and to use Sterimar blue nasal spray. I couldn't tolerate the Flixonase spray really so just used the Sterimar.
I'm not using anything just at the moment but am on HRT so maybe that does help the dried out membranes! It's not been too bad lately, but the smell sometimes comes back now and again if I squeeze my nostrils together, quite gross!

Thanks Julia, its not been too bad lately, can still smell it a little but nothing too bad. Thats really interesting as about 8-10 years ago I got diagnosed with rhinitis, I wouldn't be surprised if its come back maybe??

Possibly has Penguin99, he said it can be caused by anything like house dust or even changes in the seasons that I may be susceptible to, I do sneeze on a regular basis, and always twice! I tend to have a real runny nose too in the summer which could be the pollen, yet I don't have full blown hay fever?
Its all very irritating, but I was reassured it wasn't anything disastrous, just annoying!!

Yeah very annoying,  I notice it more when I've been out and take my mask off. I do suffer with hayfever, although this year I've been pretty much ok, got this instead  ::)

I have started with something like this since the central heating went back on.

I also had a good clean of the house which set off my allergies again.

I am on the sterimar  ::)  and plenty of water.
