Title: Worried about ovarian cancer
Post by: woohycn on August 02, 2020, 12:42:57 PM
Hey so i’m 17 and was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure recently and now i’ve been having really bad bloating and my stomach has been hurting for thr past 2 days. I googled it and it says that bloating is a symptom of ovarian cancer so now i’m really worried that i have it. I’ve been on HRT for about 2 months now, do you guys think that this is normal?

There are many causes of bloating so try not to worry too much. Some people get bloating with hrt, I get when I've eaten something that doesn't agree with me. If you still have it after a few days and you're worried perhaps see your gp. Did they do scans when you were diagnosed? If they did they should have seen anything abnormal then.

They did an abdominal scan to check my ovaries at the start of this year, that’s the only scan i’ve had. And they said that they could only see one ovary which was normal apparently and that my womb was small.

If you are concerned ask your surgery for the appropriate blood test, it is important for you to be reassured.  You could have a look-see at the ovacome website too specifically for those with cancer.

You have a lot going on when at your age you should be enjoying yourself!   :tulips2:

can we even get blood tests right now?? because my brother tried and they said no because of covid-19.

The Health Service is apparently open for business.  There is no reason not to have bloods taken, your brother should complain to Matt Hancock.  Let us know how you get on.

Blood tests are being taken now. I had one two weeks ago at my surgery.

It may be that some Labs are being used purely for C-19 testing but your GP should be able to send bloods to another Lab..  It appears that C-19 is being used to close down parts of the Health Service .........

Hi woohycn,

Sorry to hear you’re having ovaries problems, you’re  so young. I get cyst on my ovaries. Seventeen years ago and three  years ago I had really bad bloating and pain. Mine was from endometriosis and Cyst on the ovaries. I’ve had cyst larger than a tennis ball. For me the pain can be constant or like someone has stabbed me, quick and sharp.

Maybe you need another scan as well as a blood test.
Please let us know how you get on

I think i’ve been bloating for 2 years ever since my periods stopped and it’s never been painful, i just bloat when i eat lots but then it goes down by morning. But these past few days i have been getting upper stomach pain and bloating, it’s not very painful but i still get this burning sensation that’s uncomfortable. I just googled bloating and saw that it’s a sign of ovarian cancer and now i’ve been really worried. When my doctors call me in next time i’m going to ask them for a blood test for that as well.

That's it!   Heartburn is more likely to be causing some of your problems.

4 me it's been intermittent since I was a young girl.  Lots of 'milk of magnesia' swallowed over the years  ::)

In more recent years I took 'Rennies' which really helped, however, I developed an associated cough so my GP gave me - of course, being menopause I can't remember the medication  ::) - the irritating 'clearing throat' reaction is present most days but not at night.  PHEW!

It doesn't matter what I eat ..... as soon as I lay down I can feel the excess saliva and burning ; sometimes I wake in the early hours with deep pain between my breasts but never down my L arm or I would be worried !

I don’t get it all the time but it does happen a lot for me and it hurts so bad.

My bloating has been really bad lately though, i ate a tiny bit this morning and my belly got huge so fast, it’s so annoying.

I took some paracetamol the other day which took the pain away for a couple of hours before it came back again, i hate taking tablets though so i can’t be bothered taking anymore :)

This might also be happening because i’m getting sick or something i don’t know?? because i’ve also had a blocked nose and have been feeling like shit these past few days as well.

I am going to ask the doctor for the CA125 bloodtest when they call me back though because i do have a few of the symptoms of ovarian cancer and i just want to reassure myself instead of googling it and being worried about it.

Ugh guys i’m really scared now, so i just weighed myself and it said 55.2kg, i have been trying to lose some weight for a while and the lowest i got on an empty stomach was 55.6kg so how do i randomly drop to 55.2kg when i’ve been eating so much.

I have most of the symptoms of ovarian cancer and have had really bad heartburn this week as well.

I feel like i have it now and i’m worried sick and don’t know what to do.

The hospital was supposed to call me back this month for a bone scan and more blood tests but i still haven’t heard back from them, i want them to call me back so i can ask for a CA125 test as well :(

Hi woohync, 0.4 kg could be due to fluids, not fat or muscle loss. If you're really concerned about ovarian cancer, register on Ovacome (Health Unlocked). There are wonderful ladies over there who can advise you on ovarian cancer. When you were diagnosed with premature ovarian failure, what scans and tests have been done?

Ovacome - good web-site.  Go directly to the web-site.

What's the worst that could happen?   Have you asked your GP for blood tests, pointing out that the health service is open?

I had lots of blood tests and then lastly they did an abdominal scan at the start of this year then i got diagnosed with it.

They said i would get called back 4 months later for a bone scan and a autoimmone disease bloodtest to see if that could have caused it.

Whenever i wake up i’m 56kg or more, the least i’ve been is 55.6kg but now after eating so much last night i’m 55.2kg, it doesn’t make sense to me.

Oh shit, i forgot ;D

I’ll call them on monday, because this is just making my anxiety and depression worse.

I realised that i was having heartburn/indigestion for a week but i had some rennie tablets the other day and it’s stopped since then, it only happens at night sometimes.

Hopefully they tell me when the hospital is going to call me back and let me get the CA125 blood test. Even if it isn’t cancer, i just want to be sure because i’ve been feeling like trash these past 2 weeks.

Haven't they called you back because of Covid? Regarding weight loss, there are many other reasons for daily changes like fluid intake/retention, how many times you've been to the loo and different foods have different rates of digestion. As far as I know, evening bloating that doesn't go away in the morning is one sign of ovarian cancer (ascites), but if it does go away it's typical of menopause.

My bloating does usually go down in the morning but these past 2 weeks it’s been kind of painful. It might’ve been because of the really bad heartburn/indigestion i was getting but apparently that is also a symptom of ovarian cancer.

I’ve been vegan for 3 years and i think the bloating started after my periods stopped. Usually things like pasta, rice and other carbs make it worse. Also fizzy drinks of course but it always went down when i woke up the next morning.

These past 2 weeks i’ve had really bad heartburn everyday and really bad bloating and when i googled it i saw ovarian cancer so i’ve been worried ever since :(

Fizzy drinks including sparkling water will aggravate heartburn and cause gas in the bowel so I'd definitely avoid.

The trouble with Google is it will always come up with worst case scenarios and when we're worried that's all we can think of.  Health anxiety is horrible and comes up a lot on here.

I wasn’t even drinking any when i had my heartburn so i don’t know why it was happening.

It really is, especially when you end up having most of the symptoms for something serious. I just want to have the blood test and make sure i don’t have it so i won’t have to be worried about it anymore.

The heartburn has finally stopped now though after having it for a week straight.

It becomes a vicious cycle, worry/anxiety feeds digestive issues and they exacerbate the worry/anxiety.  That's how it goes for me.  I can guarantee if I'm stressed about something the first place it hits is my stomach and bowel.  It can then take ages to calm down because I start panicking that it's something more serious.

My heartburn just started again ugh.

It might be happening because of stress because i’ve just been crying and my anxiety has been bad this past week because i’m so worried about having ovarian cancer. I don’t even know what’s happening anymore.
Title: Re: Worried about ovarian cancer
Post by: woohycn on August 08, 2020, 08:48:07 PM
I think it's likely your anxiety is feeding your digestive issues and causing the bloating and heartburn and then they're making you stressed and anxious and so it goes on.  Have you tried downloading a mindfulness/relaxation app such as Calm or Headspace.  If you're struggling to eat try eating little and often, it's easier for your system to cope with small amounts rather than three big meals.

Yeah, it might be.

I haven’t but i’ll download some now:)

I’m fine with eating, i haven’t lost my appetite or anything and i just checked my weight and i’m 56.4kg (i’m usually 57kg after eating but i’ve lost some weight for some reason) so i gained the weight back again. I’m going to check tomorrow morning again and see if i drop to 55.2kg again. I might’ve dropped to that because i didn’t drink anything and peed like 3 times and all my bloating had gone down.

Thanks for all the help though, i feel a bit better now and i’ll let you guys know what happens when i call my gp on monday as well :)

Now I'm confused.

If you have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer you are unlikely to have been left for another 4 months.  Treatment would have been immediate as time is important.  Do read the ovacome website and ask the questions where they deal with ladies going through diagnosis and treatment daily.

Weight can alter when one opens one's bowels ;-)

Noo i wasn’t diagnosed with ovarian cancer, i was diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency.

I’ve been bloating really bad and having heartburn for the past week so i googled it and ovarian cancer came up, and i have most of the symptoms.

I woke up today and had randomly lost 1kg and weight loss is a symptom of ovarian cancer as well so i’ve just been really worried.

I just checked it and i don’t have a lot of the symptoms mentioned on there but i have most of the symptoms listed on the nhs site so which one is accurate??

One of the symptoms is vaginal bleeding on the ovacome site and i’ve been having some bleeding now but i think that’s because of starting hrt 3 months ago so could that be a symptom of it or just because of hrt?

I’ve been having other symptoms too which is why i’ve been worrying. I don’t think i really have that much support. I’m fine though, i don’t care about the fertility side since i’ve never wanted kids but everything else is just annoying.

I just called my gp about my appointment being forgotten at the hospital and they said it has nothing to do with them and that i should get in touch with the hospital. I just tried calling the hospital and they’re not answering and the wait time could be hours so i guess i’m not getting that bone scan and other blood tests ugh.

feeling bloated all the time, swollen tummy, persistent heartburn/indigestion, some random weight loss and sometimes feeling tired. Just wanted to have the blood test to make sure i don’t have it but apparently it’s too expensive for them to do it so i guess that’s not happening. They just prescribed me antacids when i’ve already been taking them.

It could be many things. HRT can give bloating and stomach problems as can stress. Keep a food diary to see whether things you eat make things worse. Keep it for at least a month meticulously recording everything you've eaten and what the effect is. If you are really concerned visit the Teenage Cancer Trust site for more details especially for young people.

I'm wondering if the hrt is causing your reflux. I have Gerd anyway, but took hrt for 6 months and my reflux was so severe even my usual PPI blockers could not stop it. This is not uncommon, other women on the forum have mentioned it.

I came off hrt a fortnight ago and it's all slowly calming down. Maybe some acid-blocking medication (PPI blockers) like Omeprazole or Lansoprazole could stop your reflux and heartburn and make you more comfortable? Don't ignore acid reflux until food gets stuck in your oesophagus like I did!

Yeah, i think it probably is causing it since i never used to get it before. I’ve been taking rennie tablets which help but my gp prescribed me stronger one’s which i need to go and pick up soon. I had terrible acid reflux today, my heart and throat felt like it was on fire all day.

As I understand you're on Evorel Conti patches? And you had trouble with them not sticking? I think you should be on a sequential regime, due to your age and you should be on a different patch if this one is not sticking to your skin, if you keep needing to replace them the breakthrough bleeding won't stop.

They usually stick on, they’ve only not stuck on like 3 times because of this weather. I would like to swap to sequi too if this bleeding doesn’t stop but i don’t know when they’ll call me back so i’ll have to wait.
