Post by: Nellie Noo on May 01, 2020, 07:11:29 PM
Hi ladies ... have had the worse reflux in the last month . Struggled with it for years but really bad recently . I Put it down to all the stress of whats going on ...but in the last few weeks ive had really bad pain in my right upper side that radiates to my back . Had bloods done at the gps last week liver function looks fine . My doctor says he is still going to refer me for a scan . I can barely lie on my right side at night its so sore . My anxiety has hit the roof ! Im constantly burping and in pain . Anybody had gallbladder issues ? Does this sound like it could be that ? So worried . Really don't want to go near a hospital at the moment . X

What did the GP suggest is the cause?  Surely he didn't simply tell you he would send you for a scan without some explanation  :-\. If you are in pain then you need to go to Hospital.  Depts need patients to attend to show that they are required ...... it's all C-19 and all other specialities have been forgotten  :'(

Did the GP suggest any pain relief?

Hi CLKD
Doctor thought it could possibly be gallstones, hence the scan . And I'm horrified to read that gallbladder problems can be due to hrt . Its listed as a side effect on my oestrogen gel info . Would have thought that the bloods would have shown inflammation on the liver but they were fine ??? So worried ... in case its something else x

Information has to mention everything that might happen.  I wouldn't think that gel would affect any organs whereas anything by mouth might well do.

Maybe put gallbladder into the search box?

Hi Nellie, did your doctor check you for coeliac disease? The reason I say this is my son 20 at the time,  had really bad reflux for around 18 months, i said it's just reflux and bought him indigestion tablets, then he started to be sick after eating, so i took him to docs, doc asked if there's Irish in the family ( no idea why) he said yes my nan ( my mum) doc then said he'd check for coeliac disease.  Which it is. He still gets reflux a bit but not as much as before , he has been diagnosed with reflux as well as coeliac. He never got bad pains in his side though. I don't want to worry you I just thought I'd mention it as it was my sons first symptom.  I'm not saying you have it either, just wanted to let you know.
Hope you feel better soon xx  :)

I had very similar symptoms Nellie, and both my GP and myself thought it was gallstones.  Turned out to be a kidney infection.

You can never be sure until you have had the scan.

Thank you ladies ... much appreciated The problem was ...it literally was a phone call to the doctor, and he listened to my symptoms over the phone  and bloods taken the next day at the surgery .so no examination as such. Looks like i will have to go for the scan as much as i really dont want to at the moment but im not going to get peace of mind until i know. I will take on board what you have both said . Thank you so much x

Hi, try not to worry too much about going to the hospital. I had to go for an emergency x-ray the other week. Appointment for 3 o'clock,  I was there at 10 to 3, changed into gown  x-ray done and out by 3: 05. Departments are empty. Xx

They usually check all your abdominal organs, so it is worth going to the scan whatever it is.

I am glad that you are getting the scan - I thought it might have been one of the things that they were putting on hold.

All my family have gallbladder problems (or rather don't now) so I feel like a ticking time bomb.

Ring a Pharmacist to get advice on pain relief?  How long will you have to wait for the scan, maybe ring the Dept to find out?

Yes - pharmacists definitely worth talking to.  They know the full arsenal of pain relief available otc (some of them seem to have ideas about how to combine them too) , and ours has been known to ring the doctor's to get a prescription sorted too.

My mother in law had severe pain in that area and used to sleep semi-prone with a pile of pillows (the V shaped ones are useful as pillow no2 for stability).  Also a reclining chair for naps.

You could try a very low fat diet while you wait, but that does not prevent gall bladder problems.  The surgeon told my brother that gall bladder problems are largely what you inherit.

I actually have gone from really not wanting to go near a hospital, to now wanting to know for sure what it is . Your experience sounds awful Daisie. But glad you got it resolved. Ive just read how common gallbladder problems are ... 1 in 4 women . Wow x

I had to have my gallbladder removed about 4 years ago. I did have acute attacks of pain, rather than chronic pain that it sounds you are suffering from, which landed me in hospital three times,  but I had to wait three months before getting to see a consultant. I did find cutting fat down to as low as possible made a difference to the frequency of attacks. This means reading ingredient lists. Fat free cottage cheese on rice cakes became a staple. I lost a lot of weight. HRT can contribute to causing it apparently as can losing weight rapidly, which l had done not long before. Apparently it's not uncommon after having a baby! That's one way of losing weight quickly! My daughter diagnosed me immediately before any doctor as her best friend had had the same symptoms after having a baby. The good news is that following day surgery, I recovered quickly and had no more problems.

My GP told me that 'female, fat and over forty'  was a term used to describe the typical patient with gallstones.

Nice  ;D

I was told I didn't fit the normal profile! I wasn't male or obese! But I was over 40!

Hello ladies.

My favourite science site NutritionFacts.Org has a YouTube video on gallbladder disease. I can't remember all the details but anyone interested in the subject may want to check out the site.

Take care ladies.

K.

Hi Nellie Noo,
I had my gallbladder removed over 4 years ago. I had suffered attacks for a few years before that, but I managed to control the pain with a mix of organic cloudy apple cider vinegar (the one with the mother in it) mixed with cloudy apple juice. Initially I would take the mix (can't remember the exact amounts now) when I felt the pain starting and within about 1/2 hour the pain would subside. I then started to use it as a way of staving off an attack, I took a sports bottle of the mix with me to work and drank it through out the day.
I must say I was sceptical at first when my GP suggested it, but it did seem to work for some time. Also try to avoid high fat foods, I always found pork would trigger an attack.
High fat food was my trigger and it was a bag of chips from the chip shop that sent me to the ER after 6 hours of screeching in pain. I was lucky the consultant on duty that night had a space and I had the operation 3 days later.
Try the vinegar/apple juice, it might just help, google the quantities as I can't remember. I think it helps with breaking down the fat.
Hope you feel better, I remember the terrible pain that comes with a gallbladder attack.

I got a gall stone attack whilst on my own in the mountains in Snowdonia. I had been feeling rough and had opted to stay in the car while my family went for a walk. No phone signal, no-one around...very scary. When they got back, my daughters partner managed to get a signal for a 999 call. I got to see the mountains from the back of an ambulance!

Thank you ladies .. will bear in mind !!
Pain just about bearable ... but bad . Never thought i would be grateful to be referred for a scan , especially with this pandemic but i need to know exactly what it is ! My bloods came back ok for liver function but doctor says still go for scan.

Hi Nellie Noo,

I've got gallstones and everytime I've had pain, my LFTs have been deranged.  Mine were caused by being vein fed following an op going wrong.
Gallbladder problems very common, pain is described as horrific. My pain is more chronic but I do live in fear of a big attack,  I also have a stone in the bile duct which can become serious.
Like you I'm scared of going hospital but I'm told by many nurse friends it's probably the best time to
go (depends where you live of course ) Covid wards are separate and everything very organised.
My GP wouldn't give me HRT for a few reasons and also mentioned gallstones as a consequence,  not sure if that is true,
Hope you get your scan soon !

Thank you Groundhog ...
Ive just got a date for scan .. two weeks to go , and now just really want to know if it is gallbladder issues. The pain seems worse at night for some strange reason , turning over in bed is very painful . Thank you for your comments x

Did the doc take a wee sample.  My gallbladder pain turn out to be a kidney infection.  I too had intermittent runny tummy.  Quite common with kidney infection apparently.

Thank you folklass and shadyglade for your comments . Im beginning to think it could be wind pain too,  as its all upper body and mainly on right side and through to back .. very painful.  Think the doctor thinks its IBS as well but wants me to get checked . Bloody hormones !!
I do hope its better than an endoscopy as well ... had one of them years ago and so glad i went for sedation .xx

I didn't find the colonoscopy too bad, and I opted for no sedation.  The worst bit is the prep the day before... make sure you stay near a toilet!
