Oh dear JP.  Have you got a temperature or aches and pains.

It could be the flu.  Both my husband and son have had streaming colds, but no cough or temperature.

Are on your own??

Hi Shadyglade, I have the dry cough, and temperature up a little today. Other symptoms are sore throat and runny nose. I do feel a bit steam-rollered! There's no way of knowing what this is, but if it's a cold it's a real humdinger.

I am on my own, but able to totter about and look after myself.

Thanks for asking.

Maybe have a look at your local Facebook grpup. There are people on ours volunteering to help those who can't go out. I hope it turns out just to be a sniffle but just in case...

Sounds more like a nasty cold.  Hope you feel better soon.

I don't yet know anyone with Corona or who has contacts with it.

Not yet.  I hope that I will be outside the 80% that may be afflicted.

My colds begin with an itchy left arm.  3 days later : Dry throat. Itchy ears and nose.  Streaming cold.  Sometimes a cough.

Do you have a thermometer thingy to check?
Title: Re: Coronavirus - anyone got it?
Post by: Joaniepat on March 17, 2020, 12:24:33 PM
The main symptoms they are looking for are dry cough/high temperature. It can present with sore throat and runny nose in addition, and even nausea. If you are fit you can get away with mild symptoms or even none. I'm 70 with no underlying conditions and reasonably fit, so in a way it would be nice to get it out of the way, but I'll never know one way or the other.

I've just heard that a prison warder at High Down prison in Banstead has tested positive. That is about 5 miles from here, so we have it close by.

Yes CLKD, I have a thermometer thingy  ;). Seem to have everything I need to hand, but could do with a new body just now  ;D. I'm also lucky to be able to take a short walk in green areas without much chance of meeting anybody, so will be able to maintain a safe distance when I feel ready to go out.

Hello Joaniepat

I suppose without testing it's impossible to know if you have the virus or not.

If you do have it I hope it is a mild case and that you feel better soon.

Take care.

Nurofen is my go-to for all aches and pains and is all that I have in the house.  I could take a bunch of paracetamol and it would kill me but not help aches and pains  :-\.

A warm bath is nice too ;-)
Title: Re: Coronavirus - anyone got it?
Post by: CLKD on March 17, 2020, 07:10:11 PM
There is NO evidence that Nurofen etc. will cause symptoms to worsen: logically, why would it? I did a google, like you do ;-)

Veran's tweet was widely shared, particularly in France, and the advice has raised questions over the impact of ibuprofen to treat the virus. CNN has contacted the French health ministry for comment.

"Deeply concerned about this bold statement," Muge Cevik, a researcher at the University of St Andrews Infection and Global Health Division, said on Twitter. "There's no scientific evidence I am aware of that ibuprofen [causes worse] outcomes in #COVID19."

"I don't think we've had any firm evidence to suggest that [ibuprofen aggravating Covid-19] is a concern at this point," said Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, professor of pediatrics and infectious disease epidemiologist at Stanford University in California

I can find no record of how Nurofen etc. makes 'flu etc. worse. Maybe this is being pushed by the companies that manufacture Paracetamol?

So has the 1 show this evening - but no one knows why?  is this being pushed by the Company that makes paracetamol or is there a physical reason ?  I can't use it and it is a dangerous drug which should be on prescription only  >:(

There are too many thread on this now all talking about the same thing!

One of my daughter's best friends is having to self-isolate as her sister in law has it. That's the closest I am to it (knowingly that is). London is rife - at least half the England cases are there. I have close family members there. One is in a vulnerable at risk group, now working from home and pretty much self isolating although well at present.

Sore throat and runny nose are less usual symptoms of Covid-19 according to the stats so hopefully just a nasty cold? Get well soon Joaniepat!

CLKD - If you google ibuprofen and bronchospasm you?ll see why this might be contraindicated in COVID-19.

I know of about 4 people (including one very close friend) who have it but I'm in London so we are ahead of the game.

Don't take Ibuprofen if you think you have Coronavirus.

My niece who works for the NHS sent me a text about it today.

Dr John Campbell on Youtube has also warned against it.

Absolutely correct.  It surpresses the immune system if the virus progresses to the pneumonia stage, so is dangerous.

My son had asthma when he was little.
I was told never to give him ibuprofen back then.

I'm scared to be honest as I have asthma and developed pneumonia after a minor cough and required hospitalisation and oxygen therapy. Fortunately it was bacterial pneumonia, so was treatable with antibiotics and steroids. But with covid 19, if you go on to develop pneumonia, it will be viral, which can't be treated with antibiotics. it's scary enough not being able breathe, even if it can be treated.

I've self isolating anyway, but am awaiting new glasses to arrive at the opticians. I hope they do, as I'm getting headaches from eye strain. Plus a dental appointment soon, which I need. Will they still be open? Both occasions which I will have to go out for, if they happen.

Perhaps they could post your specs? I know they normally like to fit them but these aren't normal times. I would only go to the dentist if you have toothache, anything else can wait. Stay safe.

I don't see how any of us will know if we have it unless we are hospitalised? A friend is self isolating under NHS advice due to exactly the same flu type symptoms I had three weeks ago when I was told, by my GP,  that my high fever which gave me a slightly productive cough meant it was definitely not Covid-19. Changing times!

'flu usually floors people.  This apparently is fever led?

It would be sensible to test families with front line workers, i.e. Doctors/Nurses to see whether it *is* this strain.  That will get people back to work more quickly.

My daughter has it (lives in London - the UK epicentre).  Well almost certain to be it in the absence of testing. She is on Day 11 of self-isolation because her husband was a bit under the weather with very mild symptoms, a bit of a cough, fatigue, achey limbs etc not even a fever so they weren't even sure he had it but she had a fever last night and is very tired today. Hoping she also gets it mildly....

Ive been on my first week of self isolation due to contact last week with a number of suspected children and staff at school.  I already had a sore throat which developed into a bit of a croaky voice and slight cough but no fever so didnt worry too much. I then had for 3 days very painful aching at the back of my thighs and hips, (new to me) had to have hot water bottles to help relieve this and paracetamol.  Today my eyes now hurt to move, hurt if I press the lids and sensitive to light and I feel tired.  Each symtom has been separate over the last week, when one ended another started.  Im hoping this is it now.

Dierdre. Wish you well soon.
Do you have anyone can get you shopping. Keep well hydrated.

I posted on the other thread about the fact I'm not sure if I already had it in Feb and i said exactly the same about leg pains.   It persisted longer than the other symptoms but went away  hasnt come back.

It may be another virus. We arent being told specifically leg pains are a feature but I have never had pains in my legs like that. Even with flu.

Sending love and hugs. Xxx

My nephew has had symptoms for 8 days.  He's a strapping lad and it's made him feel really ill, he says worse in case it's The Virus  >:( as he can't dismiss it as 'flu'

I haven't seen him for over 18 years.  Wouldn't recognise him if I met him in the street  ::)

Until we get anti-virus testing people won't know exactly what they have been infected with/not.  Hopefully as part of on-going researching regarding C-19 to gain a wider picture testing will be available to anyone who has suffered.  It won't need to be done immediately .......

Thanks Tc, my family are dropping of food etc at the door so ok. I'd never had these leg pains before either, i think aches and pains in limbs are a symptom. The list of symptoms seem to be expanding as we know more from others that have tested positive and not all have the classic fever and cough.

Daughter and partner have both possibly had it over the past few days. He was teaching up till recently but she's been working from home. Very bad aches and pains, slept 17 hours solid, couldn't open eyes for more than a few seconds, dry cough, no appetite and daughter got heavy sensation in chest. Felt really bad. How can you know if you've had it. I would have thought you could ring somewhere and at least register that you've had symptoms. Why are there so many different variations of it?? Son's FIL (in his 50s) had to have ambulance today after horrendous symptoms but they said not I?ll enough for a hospital bed!!

Hi Deirdre I had low level aching in my lower back/hips last weekend and felt a bit under the weather but it had cleared up by Monday. It may be another virus. Today I have had some very mild virus like symptoms too but no temperature or cough so I don't think I need to worry.  Back on march 11th (my birthday) I had a hint of a throat irritation and coughed a couple of times. Thought of cancelling my birthday meal but decided that I was being hypochondriac and went ahead with it. Have had several mini episodes like that this month.

There are probably alot of people sat in isolation at home at the moment with chest infections, bronchitis and even bacterial pneumonia that antibiotics would have sorted quickly but cant get diagnosed properly because we have to assume it covid-19 and isolate.

My nephew has been very ill in London with 'symptoms' but not ill enough to require treatment.  So until the antivirus tests come in and if he bothers to get one, he won't know what he's had.

Haven't heard of anyone locally who is isolating, a few are shielding due to other health issues .  We are avoiding as much as possible.

I think that Boris is wasting his time.  Those Police on the BBC right now aren't keeping their distance.  Writing to us what's that about?  Waste of trees, waste of money, waste of his time.   He's been Voted in as PM GET ON WITH IT!  Also, who will be disinfecting all these letters B4 they leave his office and B4 they are opened?  Which bit of don't touch DOESN'T HE GET  :bang: :bang: :bang:

?  ?M8.4  ?  to be spent on the above.  How many will contact the Virus by touching this and as the Royal Mail are looking to shut down postal services ....... I think that this is a mis-use of his position and funds!

I have just come across the 1st person I know well who has it. In fact 2 of them because her partner is ill too. Both work in the NHS but not nurses or doctors. I was lucky with the 'flu: went to bed and woke with it the next morning.  3/4 days in bed B4 gingerly getting out to test my legs enough to dare to walk downstairs.  I remember Mum and my sister having it one year and they were ill for weeks it seemed.  My sister also had rheumatic fever 3 times ....... so ill when she was 9 that they couldn't take her to Hospital.  It was touch and go for 3 days/nights.

It seems that the illness either gets better or, after two weeks, rapidly becomes pneumonia. I know of three people locally who have died and two others have tested positive.  :'(

Yes,probably LM he's been on the ABs longer than that though but he's been very poorly for a week now,so the infection is probably quite deep seated
I heard from a friend who has it today. She and her partner have been ill for 10 days already with no improvement.

I do hope Jillydoll's husband recovers soon - is it definitely Covid-19?

Just found out yesterday during video phone-call session with my (grown-up) children that not only do my daughter and husband in London have it (latter now recovered) but my son has had it for 5 days (mid 20's living alone in London) and didn't tell me as he thought I would be worried  :o. I certainly was and would have been as he is in the category of having a condition which could have made him more at risk. However he says he had cough, fever, aches and pains, fatigue, loss of taste and smell, took no meds and is now recovering - phew - hopefully will continue to do so. he said all is team has had it so could have incubated it before starting to work from home or uit could have come in with food he has ordered even though he is meticulous at gelling and sanitising etc. Carried on working (at home) all the while....

It seems that the illness either gets better or, after two weeks, rapidly becomes pneumonia. I know of three people locally who have died and two others have tested positive.  :'(

Taz how very sad  :'(

Stay safe everyone

It is said in the Telegraph this morning, that anyone with symptoms should NOT work - they need to drink plenty and rest.  Working increases the stress levels which lowers an already stricken immune system. Working may increase the days it takes to begin recovery.  Seems sensible to me.

Hurdity thank goodness they have recovered. What a relief. I do hope everyone here who is sick is o.k.

My sister quarantined for 7 days. She is considered key worker  (medical supply company.)  She still coughing today but under the rules supposed to go back to work.  Her company have zero distancing in place.no sanitising either.  She already complained about it before she got sick.  She felt like under guidelines she had no choice but return to work today. But I spoke to her. As I see it even if she hasnt had the virus she has been very unwell with something else and immunity will be low.  So she phoned doc and asked if it was o.k to return to work still coughing and unwell. We had been told its o.k to go back even if still coughing. But doc said not to go back to work, issued the paperwork and she will be on sick pay.  But at least she wont be at risk working for a company which isnt protecting employees.

Her company always treated their employees like crap before all this.  The crisis has realy highlighted those companies that just dont care about their staff.

Much love to everyone.

Good idea.  There are probably guidelines on Public Health England or local authority web-sites.  No one should be expected to work in a danger environment anyway, which is why my sister left the NHS 3 years ago.  2 on duty for 25 mentally ill patients, my sister being the qualified person in charge.   >:(.

I have seen a lot of conflicting views about the 7 day period and whether it is enough. Opinions from other countries have said that it must be 7 or 14 days after the coughing has completely finished.  1 person wrote that the British couple taken ill on the cruise ship still tested positive 20 days later(or maybe 28).

Katejo. Yes. Conflicting info.  The warden in mums flats went off Thursday as her husband coughing and temp.  The manager phoned to tell the residents that she "doesnt think hes had it" and warden can come back tommorow.  They are all vulnerable elderly.  One of the daughters had to phone the company and explain the procedures.  You cant just say "I dont think he had it".  Most of the people currently quarantined dont know for sure.

I suspect the company has no cover for her.

Sorry to hear about your sister Tc. There are guidelines but as always the data don't give the true picture either re the virus or how well  someone is. I think the 7 day rule is absurd frankly. Absolutely - in the absence of testing no-one knows whether they have had it although if you have classic symptoms and in a hot spot area then it is very likely.

If they are not able to work while observing the 2 m rule then the company should provide PPE for staff and especially if she is a key worker in medical supplies FFS!!!

I will put some information about the virus and how long it lasts on the scientific/medical thread on Covid-19 I started in Other Health Discussion so that it might be easier to find stuff. here is the NHS Info:

Usually a virus will be gone after 7 days.  So although symptoms may be similar, in the normal run of a cold/cough, 1 should begin to feel better after 3/4 days and fit for work after a week.

Other symptoms stated today: loss of smell and taste are becoming more important to be aware of; dizziness and sore throat and the fact that 1 feels better after 4-5 days but the bug returns when unexpected.  Full update on the News later I expect after today's Government announcement.

I think it's to do with the total virus load.  People may still test positive but the virus load present is too low for community transmission.

I read that somewhere but don't ask me where  ::)

I saw a very good article explaining it. Might be able to find it tomorrow. Symptoms are more severe if the patient caught it when close up to several sick people or carriers (eg. In a crowded place). If they get it by shaking hands with 1 carrier, symptoms are much milder.

I know exactly what you mean. Also didn't feel good this morning but it was more to do with shoulder/back tension and ear discomfort. One thing I don't like about this lockdown period is the increased difficulty in seeing a doctor. I had a GP call back yesterday but would much have preferred to go in so he could check my earache rather than doing it over the phone. I found it hard to answer some of the questions accurately.
I heard on the news this morning that all breast scans (and some other scans) are being suspended for 3 months because the staff need to get too close to us to do it effectively. Hope that no one finds that they have breast cancer which could have been spotted earlier.

I have been treated for a severe chest infection for the last 4 weeks - had all the c-19 symptoms except fever 4 weeks ago. Have seen (1 real, and 2 telephone) docs. Had 2 courses of abs and steroids to help with breathing problems which are bad. Doc 3 said she was moving me out of the chest infection box into the c-19 box as I am a text book case (despite no fever or none that I noticed). AM now on very strong abs and more steroids. Fingers crossed.

It's all so confusing. I hope you feel better soon Bramble. I can understand the steroids but not the antibiotics as Covid-19 doesn't appear to cause chest infections at all. Does Dr 3 think you have caught it on top of what infection you've already had maybe? Do take care.

Breathing went downhill about 5 days after the dry cough started and has not improved. I also have bursitis at the moment which is one of the reasons the doc has given me the strong abs as she thinks I also have an infection of some kind somewhere in my body.

Royal Mail has introduced steps to ensure the safety of its workers after staff took strike action against the lack of measures in place against the spread of coronavirus.

Workers in Chatham, Kent, took industrial action on Thursday morning and have since returned to work after the company introduced social distancing measures and other aids such as latex gloves and extra hand soap.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) had raised serious safety concerns after Royal Mail had told workers it is safe to work without full Personal Protective Equipment.

It is pneumonia,he had it as a young man and Jill said this time it's a 100 times worse but he's a strong man and I'm sure he will recover in full, was just looking up the nhs site and it says it can take up to 6 weeks to get over the breathlessness, still can't believe they sent him home twice and stopped his antibiotics, shocking really but I guess the staff are under so much pressure to do the right thing. He's now waiting for the second covid result to come back, fingers crossed he hasn't got that too

It took me many months to recover from pneumonia. As a doctor told me, you have to be patient as your lungs are damaged and have to heal.

Because of 'virus load'.  When you are treating patients heavily infected and very ill, you risk coming into contact with very high levels of the virus.  That not only increase the risk of infection but the severity of the infection.

There should be a Public Enquiry about the health workers who are dying.  Initially it was to be expected but the whole World is more aware of distancing requirements, how to cleanse and how to wash down areas etc..

How can a Consultant in A&E catch the Virus?  Where, how and when?

Another 1 - Tracy Maguire remembers the moment she saw doctors insert a swab into her three-week-old baby's nose to test for coronavirus.
The new mother says it is one of the "worst things" she has seen.

"It was the first time I'd seen my baby cry tears," she said. "I held her, I was crying and we were just trying to get each other through the situation".

Born prematurely at just 3lbs 5oz (1.5kg), baby Peyton was diagnosed with Covid-19 at just three weeks old.
Her arrival on 26 March - eight weeks before her due date - defied all of the family's planning.

WTF - how does a new born get C-19  :bang: :bang: :bang:  fortunately she is home!

A friend's relative went into a care home last year.  Somehow C-19 took him off the planet: how CAN that happen  :bang: :bang: :bang: he was getting more poorly due to him being 95 but 'care' should mean ?  I see that the CQC have popped their heads up and made comments but they should have been in at the start with advice as to how to keep residents safe.

Hello ladies.

I wonder if part of the problem is that care homes are private businesses. The local council can't demand how Marks and Spencers run their business for example so why would a care home be any more responsive? Add to that the cuts in local authority staff it's no surprise that inspections aren't what they were unfortunately.

Take care everyone.

Because many are Council run and others even though owned privately or by Companies, they have to take on clients from the Councils?

It is wrong that there is a body that is answerable to no-one that oversees the 'care' ........... they don't have right of access and rarely go back to check that any 'suggestions' have been implemented.  When Homes close the CQC will pop up ....... 'we gave them advice which the home obviously didn't take' - instead of nagging and nagging .........  :-\

They go into hospitals and schools too.

Everyone here OK thus far?  No lasting ill effects from these strange times.

I am fed up now with the government who tell us daily that PPE is being sourced/delivered.  However, the load from Turkey is apparently useless.

Surely in a State of Emergency some PPE is better than none.  Of course we aren't told what the problem actually might be ........ why not nip to B&Q or Homebase and source aprons from them?  Can't be any less appropriate  :'(

The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached the Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory of Denmark, in March 2020.

As of 8 May, the confirmed infection rate is 1 case per 280 inhabitants, one of the highest rates in the world, but the archipelago has also tested at a very high frequency, with the number of tests equalling c. 17 per cent of the population (among all the world's countries, only in Iceland has almost as many been tested, per capita).[3]
The vast majority of the confirmed cases have been asymptomatic or mild; a few have been admitted to hospital.[4]

As of 8 May there were none in hospital, only one person was still infected (the rest having recovered), and there had been no deaths.[2] On the evening of 8 May, it was announced that the Faroes were free of COVID-19.[5]

Wearing substandard PPE is like wearing a wellie with a hole in it - except instead of a wet foot you catch CV.
I don't think b&q or homebase will have them. We got it from an agricultural suppliers when we needed it for spraying but they have been out of stock since the pandemic started.

Tnx.  But what would sub-standard actually be?  I can't find anything that explains British Standard for PPE.  People are also confusing scrubs with PPE  ::) .......... scrubs it seems can be made to of anything ............

Title: Re: Coronavirus - anyone got it?

Ours can be used up to 3 times. When they were short of PPE they changed the guidelines so they could be disinfected and be worn again (I think they said up to 3 times but not sure). Medical staff weren't happy about it. Yes, scrubs are different, usually cotton so definitely not virus-proof. Our PPE looks like it has a plastic coating. Any imperfections in the material makes it useless. Or it could be seams that are the problem.

Sweaty to wear. It's not something you'd choose to wear if you didn't have to, scrubs would be much more comfortable. Trading standards don't fly to inspect anything else so not sure why they would for this? And perhaps they need testing equipment that's in the UK.

From what I have read from tweets from nursing staff, it's not the staff on Covid wards that are dying.  It's the staff that are on general wards, as they are at the back of the queue for PPE.

That is the problem.   We've been out in the car once since lockdown 2 a supermarket where restrictions were in place: I have wiped steering wheel etc. with meths on our return and down the Council bins - so the advice to swab surfaces with boiled, soapy water with bleach or wipe down with meths has been important here.

this came to light earlier in the week:

Coronavirus may have been in Britain two months before the first confirmed cases, after choir singers were struck down following the return of a member's partner from Wuhan.

Jane Hall, who sings in the Voice of Yorkshire choir and All Together Now community choir, said friends in both groups had fallen ill in January with one member experiencing symptoms consistent with Covid-19 as early as late December.

The first singer to become ill was the partner of a businessman who had returned from a trip to Wuhan in mid-December and developed a hacking cough.

The first confirmed cases in the UK were in February this year, when two members of the same family became sick while staying at a hotel in York city centre.

Interesting CLKD and sadly not surprising. The main choir I sing with cancelled our end of season concert,  the plan being to have it in November instead. Now (for health and safety's sake) we will not be meeting for rehearsals until January 2021. The average age of the choir is approx 70 and although I am quite a bit younger than that, and disappointed not to sing, meet up with friends, and try to return to some form of normality, I'm pleased that H+S is being observed. There would be the concert too, which would see a crowd of people gathering together in the same space.

I don't know of anyone who has the virus but I do know of stupid, thoughtless folk who have a complete disregard of the safety guidelines, and of course, THEY won't be the ones who get this virus will they? (I don't wish it on them). One family is continuing to child-mind for their grandchildren - what message is that giving to young people? And the Govt want to have social distancing at schools???? I wonder who thought of back to school on 1st June? It sure as anything wouldn't have been any teachers - oh no - how on earth would they know what's best for future generations? And I don't know if it will be too early in August either the way things are going. Expensive babysitters, that's what these poor teachers will be ...........................oh dear, best get off this soapbox now before I fall off it and bruise some of my good ribs  :bang: :hotflash:

Hello ladies.

French doctors have discovered COVID19  in the autopsies of people who died from pneumonia in November last year. This proves that the virus was active in Europe at the end of last year.

I believe that Kawasaki disease can also be brought on by other viruses. There is an illness common in young children known as 'Slapped cheek' because is causes a rash on the cheek. There are no other symptoms and the  child usually makes a full recovery.

I think we are all waiting with bated breath to see if the changes to lockdown lead to another surge in cases. Let's hope not but only time will tell.

Wishing everyone well.

Another resident at a Skye care home at the centre of a coronavirus outbreak has died - bringing the total number of fatalities at the facility to nine.

A total of 49 residents and staff have tested positive at Home Farm care home in Portree.

The Care Inspectorate has raised "serious and significant concerns" about the facility following an unannounced visit on Tuesday.

It prompted NHS Highland to intervene, and it is now effectively running Home Farm.

The Care Inspectorate is also taking court action in an attempt to cancel HC One's registration to run the facility.

Who can be tested:
Our priority is testing patients to inform their clinical diagnosis.

You can apply to get a test if you?re in one of the following groups:

all essential workers including NHS and social care workers with symptoms (see the full list of essential workers)

people over 65 with symptoms

people with symptoms going to work who cannot work from home (for example, construction workers, shop workers, emergency plumbers and delivery drivers)

anyone who has symptoms of coronavirus and lives with any of those identified above

Additionally, we are testing:

social care workers and residents in care homes, with or without symptoms, both to investigate outbreaks and, following successful pilots, as part of a rolling programme to test all care homes (see the guidance for care home residents and workers in England)
NHS workers and patients without symptoms, in line with NHS England guidance

so much for stay at home, save the NHS - what about those in the queue to be tested if others have symptoms  :-\

I no longer wake/go to sleep wondering if and when  :-\

We are keeping our distance as much as possible.   However:

Hundreds of workers have tested positive for coronavirus at meat processing plants and abattoirs.
They include a chicken processing site in Anglesey, where more than 150 workers [out of over 580] have become infected with Covid-19, and plants in Wrexham and West Yorkshire. [and Leicestershire]

There have also been major outbreaks in Germany, France, Spain and the US.

Bev Clarkson from the union Unite, says: "Unite has warned time and again that coronavirus outbreaks at meat processing factories throughout the UK were likely".

Why are meat workers getting coronavirus?

People get infected with coronavirus from droplets, which may be coughed, sneezed or exhaled by an infected person.

The infection may come through close contact with the person or by touching infected surfaces.

"Factories and, in particular, indoor areas which are cold and damp, are perfect environments for coronavirus to linger and spread," according to Lawrence Young, Professor of Molecular Oncology at the University of Warwick.

"Virus-containing droplets from infected individuals are more likely to spread, settle and stay viable."

But all these operators are in full PPE ...........  :-\

Also: early on in the pandemic in a hospital an empty isolation room was infected by a virus similar to C-19.  A metal bed was coated with a sample and within 8 hours, it had spread throughout that floor.  ? air conditioning ? : coughs and sneezes even though people were gowned and masked? : this room was a no-go area for those other than who were barrier nursing so there was no reason for entry.
Title: Re: Coronavirus - anyone got it?

The workers in these factories can come into the uk without quarantine, Romania and Poland have high infection rates and this type of industry employs them here and in Germany.  Its not pleasant work in cold damp conditions and perfect for viruses to survive.

This type of industry has been in the spotlight in the past, it needs much more scrutiny. If anything comes from these outbreaks I hope its better working conditions and better hygiene.

Hello ladies.

The meat packing factories in America have been closed for a few weeks due to COVID infecting the workers. Germany has had the same problem.
In the US they thought the virus spread easily because it was impossible to social distance on the production line however the workers wear plastic aprons and gloves etc which should offer some protection. The latest theory is that the virus prefers cold conditions so a chilly factory floor would help it to spread in the atmosphere.

The more we can learn the better but that takes time obviously.

Take care ladies.

We don't buy cheap meat but prefer if it's gone straight from the farm to the butchers.  Same with sausages.  A lot of the very cheap stuff comes from abroad and you can't guarantee animal welfare.

Maybe food production factories are in the spotlight because they remained open when other factories were shut? Seasonal agricultural workers were flown in but I hadn't heard of any factory workers.
You can guarantee welfare standards of food atm as it's governed by the EU, I doubt the same will be true when we've left.

We have lots of gaps in the food proceasing industries: i.e. chickens bred in France, being flown here and labelled as 'UK' ......

Also why now?  Why now are factory workers testing positive?  It isn't clear if these have shown symptoms or if it's the fact that the testing kits have arrived .........

Six people have tested positive for coronavirus in an outbreak at a test and trace call centre in North Lanarkshire.

"Sitel", which carries out contact tracing for NHS England, said it was aware of a "local outbreak" at its Motherwell site.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland the call centre has been closed.
He said "extensive contact tracing" was under way.

Sitel said it was "urgently investigating" the outbreak with Public Health Scotland.

The company said it had requested that all staff who have been working at the site undergo testing within the next 24 hours.
A spokeswoman for NHS Test and Trace said everyone at the site is currently working from home while a deep clean takes place.

Fresh fruit and flower suppliers to major supermarkets have had an outbreak of Covid-19, public health officials have confirmed.

MM Flowers and AM Fresh UK, based on one site in Alconbury, Cambridgeshire, have seen 26 employees test positive.
The firms, which employ 550 full-time staff and 300 agency workers, said they were working with Public Health England to trace the source of the outbreak.

Public Health England said it would issue a statement later.

A spokeswoman for the flower company said: "Like many organisations, AM Fresh UK and MM Flowers have taken extensive steps to ensure the safety of their people and their continued operation providing fresh produce and cut flowers.

Many of my friends have been using Click and Collect since the beginning of Lockdown and they say they will continue.   I thought the  social distancing and hand sanitising measures in shops were pretty good so I have been happy to shop in person.

We must all do whatever we can to feel safe and keep well.

Title: Pets and Coronavirus
Post by: CLKD on July 27, 2020, 01:49:01 PM
Cats - apparently.  Don't panic, it's 1 thus far.

A pet cat has tested positive in the UK for the strain of coronavirus that is causing the current pandemic.
Experts say it is the first confirmed case of infection in an animal in the UK but does not mean the disease is being spread to people by their pets.
It's thought the cat caught coronavirus from its owner, who had previously tested positive for the virus. Both have now recovered.

UK chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss said: "This is a very rare event, with infected animals detected to date only showing mild clinical signs and recovering within in a few days.

"There is no evidence to suggest that pets directly transmit the virus to humans. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and will update our guidance to pet owners should the situation change."

Yvonne Doyle, Public Health England's director for health protection, advised people to wash their hands regularly, including before and after contact with animals.

An animal's fur could carry the virus for a time if a pet were to have come into contact with someone who was sick.

A private vet initially diagnosed feline herpes virus - a common cat respiratory infection - but the sample was also tested for Sars-Cov-2 as part of a research programme.

It will be interesting to see if any of those attending raves i.e. in Thetford Forest, 'go down' with C-19.  Apparently there are so many in Thetford that the Police have taken a wait and watch approach.  There's also a horse fair in Buckingham area ........... 'under C-19 guidelines' .  Apparently.

Now University Students are being told not to attend  :-\

The young people are apparently angry that 'they' are being blamed for the spread of the virus.  They don't get that they could be carriers having never had symptoms or could be minimally infected .........

They seem unaware that they could carry this virus to vulnerable people.  Why they feel that they are 'blamed' - it's a fact that during certain outbreaks of certain illnesses children and/or young people are super spreaders  :-\

Some UK Colleges are taking steps to test all students and staff - don't know how often during Term or whether it's a private testing company but I think it's a good idea.

Up to 300 people who attended a charity football match are being told to self-isolate after 28 people tested positive for Covid-19.

The event at Burnside Working Men's Club (WMC), in Fencehouses on the border of Sunderland and Durham, took place on 30 August.
Anyone who attended must self-isolate for 14 days from then.

Burnside WMC said "if we knew at the time what we know now" then the match "would never have gone ahead".

In a statement it wished everyone affected a "speedy recovery" and admitted safety precautions on the day "were not strict enough".

Durham County Council has been working with Sunderland City Council and Public Health England to manage the response.

Eight patients have died with coronavirus at a hospital where 82 cases have been linked to an outbreak on the site.

Planned surgeries have been temporarily stopped at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant as part of a plan to manage the outbreak.

Patients who would usually be taken to A&E in an emergency will also be sent elsewhere.

The temporary measures come into force at 14:00 BST on Wednesday.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board said it believed about three-quarters of the 82 cases were infections caught at the hospital and that of those caught in hospital, there had been eight deaths.

Two hospital wards closed after outbreak

Six of those 82 patients are in intensive care, although that figure has fallen by one since last week. The health board does not believe they caught the virus while at the hospital.

A hospital has gone into partial lockdown after an outbreak of coronavirus.

Over the weekend a "small number" of seriously-ill patients in St Helier Hospital's intensive care unit and renal ward tested positive for Covid-19.

The hospital has restricted visiting affected sites.

The Sutton hospital launched a major investigation into how the infection has spread.

Hospital Director, Dr Ruth Charlton, said: “The safety and wellbeing of our patients and staff is our priority.

"Those who tested positive have been isolated from other patients.

I feel ok, nothing more than a bit run down.

One of my sisters symptoms is a rash on the top of her foot, its a red itchy patch.  She spoke to a pharmacist today who has given her cream to put on it and confirmed its a covid symptom, I dont  think its publicised as a symptom for adults to look out for.

Yes still in lockdown, its really getting out of hand, the Welsh government cant keep us like this for ever, Compared to parts of England our rates are very low, here its 53 per 100,000 yet I am not allowed to leave the area, consider yourself very lucky you live in England.

Does any1 feel that a 2 weeks UK lockdown would be beneficial?

Hair salons, nail salons, GPs, Hospitals, Vet., dental surgeries should all be OK as they are hygienic anyway.  Visit shops as we did when necessary or have deliveries.  Shut all bars:

Apparently any premises that has an alcohol licence has to shut even if they can close off the bar area 2 the public.  So Hotels have to shut ...  but cafes remain open if they don't sell wine etc.; these's no logic or am I more confused than B4  :-\

In Hotels it's easy to not serve alcohol.  Each establishment should be merited ............ a bit bad if 1 is in a Hotel that has to shut due to an alcohol licence, does 1 have to head home ..........  :-\. I would cling to the duvet ;-)

Well here we shouldn't mix with any other households, in the house or garden, BUT we can meet other people at the pub, or for a meal. As long as it's not more than 6. Ridiculous!
Which is why I think people here are still mixing in their houses. I personally see it everyday.
Now whether these people are fed up with it all and doing their own thing, OR they don't know about the restrictions, is anyone's guess. 🤷‍♀️
I'm not sure another lockdown will sort it out tbh. It's going to be here until we get a vaccine just like all the other illnesses from back in the day. 🤷‍♀️

I've been reading today about Derek Draper. He's in a bad way. Not sure he'll be home now until next spring time. Such a shame. It's left him with multiple illnesses. I feel so,sorry for his wife and family. ( Kate Garraway) .

So now the main hotspots (large cities mostly) will be temporarily reverting back to a previous stage, only modified.  Gyms and movie theatres will be closed, restaurants will be take out only and a few other restrictions.  Schools and day cares remain open. Morning C.C. keep that mask on!

Apparently the UK government are clutching ideas from the air as there have been few cases relating to eateries.  One hotelier was telling Jeremy Vine that not one person had C-19 in his area - he did say local towns but the names didn't mean anything - and none of his sector had infections. But of course, it's easy target; hotels and pubs..

That doesn't explain the sudden increase of hospital admissions but until we know where these patients are from, i.e. cities, crowded areas etc., it remains a learning curve  :-\

Used coronavirus swab tests were accidentally given out to households in Birmingham, council officials said.

Birmingham City Council said about 25 kits had been given out by mistake in the student area of Selly Oak as part of its "drop-and-collect" service.

It said the error was quickly realised, the kits remained intact and there was no evidence of cross-contamination.

However, student David Lewes, 21, said he and four housemates used the tests without realising they were not new.
"We are really distressed, shocked, violated and one of my friends threw up after finding out they had been used before," he said.

The third-year University of Birmingham student said the council team dropped the test off at their home in Tiverton Road on Tuesday evening saying they would return a few minutes later to collect them.

Hi all,
My son in law has tested positive, we are all gutted.  They are super careful , work from home , shop online etc but hes obviously picked it up somewhere.  It’s dwy 5 I’m terrified he will get worse or my daughter will also get it, they have two little girls. My anxiety off the scale.  We haven’t been in direct contact with them but we have with the children but we don’t have to self isolate.
My 60th birthday tomorrow I just want them well x
Me being me go to the very worse case scenarios, wish my brain would stop torturing me x
We live in rural wales, low incidence , I just can’t quite believe it x

Does he have symptoms?  Many people will carry viruses without feeling ill.  I would have thought that if you have been in contact with the children that you will be 2nd away from the virus and should be isolating.  At least that's what has happened to a friend who was 2 steps away from a positive result.

I'm sure that your son in law will have had advice from NHS Wales.  If he has taken the children to school, it's the most possible place.  He will have been in contact with someone - how long is the incubation period?  It depends on what is 'current' on any particular day!

Yes he does have symptoms clkd, he had a high temp and body aches.  My daughter has a splitting headache tonight but could be stress.  I haven’t heard of many cases in the town that’s what I don’t get but as you say it doesn’t take much . I’m trying to stop my mind going to these awful places.
It might be an idea to get tested just for peace of mind if nothing else. Just keep in mind younger folks rarely suffer any more than a few days of symptoms.
Get tested and try not to worry.

Thank you.  My son in law is 41 and my daughter 36 so quite young I suppose . I’m just a shocking worrier and I thunk of the children if someth8ng was to happen but I know most ppl have mild symptoms. We’ve been so brainwashed about this disease I’m just terrified for them now, I’m nit really worried about myself which is daft .
Oh dear horrible times x

Of course these symptoms could so easily be 'flu so best that he got a test.  What has he been advised with regards pain relief etc.?  It is a worry but I am sure that your daughter can get a test and probably ought to do so.  As should the kids.

Until we are all tested to see who is a carrier we will never be on top of this Virus.

It does make my thinking that if we wear masks etc. that we are unlikely to get 'flu this year  :-\.  I've had the snuffles briefly and now a friend has a heavy head cold and cough but has tested neg for C-19.  He has remained out of the way of most people other than shopping weekly when it's not busy, going for long walks alone and when necessary worn a mask!  Go figure  :-\

The Metropolitan Police has said it is taking no further action against an MP who travelled by train from London to Glasgow after testing positive for coronavirus.
The force said Margaret Ferrier had not breached laws in England which require people to self-isolate because she was tested before they came into effect.
The case is now being examined by Police Scotland.

To be honest Annie, the PCR test is unreliable, even the person who devised it says it's not suitable for Covid testing.  Covid is a corona virus, as is a cold and what your friend has sounds very much like a cold.  I would say it's a good candidate for a 'false positive' result.

Hello ladies.

Tinkerbell -  apologies if you have already answered this question but did your daughter have COVID without developing symptoms?  If so she is fortunate to escape illness.

I saw an interview earlier with a Swedish scientist who has found COVID antibodies in blood donations that were collected before the pandemic.  The scientist wonders if even ordinary Coronavirus infections  offer some protection against COVID in some people.

Take care ladies.

There is a WHO research bulletin who mentions protection from previous coronavirus infections.  It also concluded that the fatality rate is much lower than first thought.

I will post the link later, when I have access to my laptop.

Earlier this year when cases were heard of but nothing too much here, my friends mum who had copd, died very suddenly in hospital, I did the funeral flowers for her, so when my friend picked them up I hugged her, like you do, this was late February.  Well around 10 days later I had the exact symptoms you SIL has, really bad headache, never get these, whole body aching, high temp and generally feeling crap, then hubby felt the same then my sons. I do wonder if we had it, hopefully we have, but we won't know. Hubby was a shielder so we are very lucky if we did have it that thankfully no serious effects.
Hope he's feeling better soon.

Penguin = my son was ill at the end January beginning of February.
We were actually on holiday and left him here at home. His work place sent him home and he stayed in bed for 3/4 days. When we came home, he was over the worst of it. He said he'd never been so ill in his life. So we're all wondering if he'd caught it, he said some people at work were coughing badly at that time and quite a few were off ill, but everyone thought it was flu. Which it may have been, but then the covid thing came out in the open, not long afterwards, ..............and it makes you wonder. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, wouldn't surprise me. We didn't know anything about it back then did we. Or if we did it was just about China.
We're the same Franny, we order online, everything we need, only popping out to the local shop if we absolutely have to. And then it's masks, gloves and sanitizer, a good hand scrub when we get in, and I still wipe all shopping down with disinfectant before putting it away.
I'm going to the crematorium Xmas time with flowers for my parents, that's the only going out I'll be doing, all Xmas presents I have to buy and send will be done on line.
It is a miserable existence! I agree. My OH and son have to go to work, that's enough stress for me as it is, incase they bring it home. Only the other day my son said 27 people were off with it. It's just a living nightmare. I've got a liver disease, so being extra careful is always in the forefront. Plus, I've seen what it done to my OH. I don't want the same to happen to me. x

I go to the top of our stairs  >:(

Birdwatchers have descended on a salt marsh to see a bird not seen in Britain for 40 years.
The rufous bush chat was spotted at Stiffkey, north Norfolk, prompting up to 100 birdwatchers to go to see it.
Native to southern Spain, Africa and the Balkans the bird, also known as the rufous warbler and rufous bush robin, is rarely seen in northern Europe.
Dick Filby, of Rare Bird Alert, said it "would have been heading for a tropical climate and went the wrong way."
He said the last time the bird was spotted in Britain was at Prawle Point in Devon in 1980.

I suppose that all the Police are turning people back on the Welsh borders  >:(

I believe so many have had it & dont know. I believe its what my friends mum died from, and as I said I hugged my friend! It's really awful and I hate it, just as everyone else does.  I just can't see an end to it. I try not to watch too much news as I tend to stress.  I saw my mum & dad last week, in their home, the first time since February, we aren't that close but it was still nice to see them.  It must be awful for those who are really close to their families and would have seen each other a few times a week.

I think they are putting these lockdown rules in certain places to stop the NHS being over run in one hit, its like its being spaced out. There are pharmacies here that are giving flu shots, I suppose to avoid overloading family doctor's offices.  Because of the high demand this year, they're ask people to register online and wait for the ok from the pharmacy to book a time.  Last year you could just show up and ask the pharmacist and get it right then.

I’m vulnerable and got the text. I had to wait a month. I have had the jab every year since I was very ill after a minor respiratory infection. DH went for the flu jab as much to protect me as himself. If it has some possibility of protection, then I believe it’s worth it.

I told him its worth having. He will be having it as he's been on immunosuppressive medication.  He's normally been healthy, never gets colds or anything but since this treatment he now  has terrible acid.

He has, its a side effect.  Doc has given him omeprazole but doesn't really do much he gets on better with bisodol & the gaviscon tablets. Doc said if it doesn't improve he'll have to have a camera down the throat.

Hello Ladies

One of our friends (mid 60s) called Hubby wed eve to say he’s tested positive.  He’s got no idea where he caught it.  Started with sore throat and runny nose then @day 3 the cough started.  He said he doesn’t feel ill enough for bed but doesn’t feel 100%

To be honest Annie, the PCR test is unreliable, even the person who devised it says it's not suitable for Covid testing.  Covid is a corona virus, as is a cold and what your friend has sounds very much like a cold.  I would say it's a good candidate for a 'false positive' result.

I haven’t caught up with this thread but my update is this guys wife got tested and is negative ????!!!!

A young girl I know  (33 ish) is poorly with a positive result and her 12 year old daughter is also positive .  My grandchildren’s pre school has a child tested positive too x

Your lucky, not case in my surgery.

My neice, who is a nurse and asthmatic, had to fight to get her jab.  She was initially told that at fifty, she was at the back of the queue.

Her Surgery is the otherside of Kent, by the way.

That’s naughty of them.  I’ve been having a flu Jab and pneumonia jab (As I have suffered this too) for asthma free of charge x

BBC were in a hospital at lunch time, Clacton I think it was.  On a Ward that has positive C-19 patients.  No wonder it's spreading:  :bang:  nurses wearing those flimsy aprons instead of full barrier nursing PPE.  Going from patient to patient in the same Ward.  No over-the-face barrier masks ............ testing every 5 days until each patient has two negative results .

My area was one of the lowest, now one of the highest, because people are not following safe procedures
Yesterday one of my daughters friends and her husband  tested positive,
Both of them have been going to the house of a friend who is a teacher, for drinks
I personally think this teacher should be reported, and everyone who was there,on a regular basis by the sound of it
Also this friend works in a food shop, [bakery] and was still working with symptoms until tested
No wonder this virus isn't going away, makes me so mad, luckily my daughter found out over the phone, and friends husband let it slip, friend was fuming with him,

I can't see how teachers/pupils are catching/transferring C-19 if everyone is keeping to guidelines, it makes me furious.  It was obvious that schools were going to be affected ........ it made no sense to me 2 keep them in continual contact.  I watched kids leaving our senior school on Monday evening, very few masks being worn, no distancing ........ when I spoke to the school I was told they are keeping to their Year Groups. What, in the street going home  :-\

In the 1st lockdown our villages weren't affected; now it's spreading, I am sure due to schools remaining open.  I thought that families had to isolate completely if anyone was contacted by track and trace, apparently not  :-\.  So the family bubble continues to go out and about whilst the contacted person isolates for 10 days .......... so anyone carrying it ..........

I think it will be years B4 we know how it should have been handled and which mistakes were made as well as which suggestions actually worked?

Haven't done any Christmas shopping yet, I'm shielding so not going in shops and then I imagine after lockdown things will be really busy. I read shops are one of the highest risks of the virus. You can't do everything online, I want to see what I'm getting for important presents and you can waste money that way.
It's not that shops are one of the highest risks. It means simply that most other places are closed so infection won't occur there. Therefore a large number of infections do originate in supermarkets. It is a distorted statistic.

Yep, there's a lot of that going on.

Supermarkets are fine if you know the quiet times.  I do this because it limits my time in a mask.  I can do a full shop for 3 adults in 15 minutes.

Then in June another similar thing for 8 days but no loss of smell or taste. Maybe 2nd bout was flu or resurgence of covid! Got ill again after seeing grandchildren.

My dd had been feeling under the weather this past week. She wasn't coughing and didn't have a fever but she was ill enough to miss her vet clinic placement day.  She didn't think she had covid, it felt more like a mild cold. The college advised her to get a swab (she did yesterday) and self-isolate until she gets the results.  It's unfortunate timing because she is supposed to do her lab assessments on campus this week.  The college she attends (two days a week she is on campus) is in a major covid hotspot so the nurse that did her swab was not surprised she came in.

This is a really interesting article about how the inflammation response from Covid, is made worse by mental stress. It's the overload of inflammation which causes the dangerous cases, not the virus load.

Well worth a read.

It's not dipped in my area despite what the media tries to tell us.  How we are in Tier 2 ............ because we don't get regular death rates it's difficult to believe what is happening  :-\ .  Rates are often 7-10 days behind.  Those that die within so many days of having a positive test, what's that about?  What did they actually die from?  We are being led to believe it was C-19 but due to patient confidentiality, the public can't be told exactly what the underlying conditions were and how they as well as the Virus, contributed to their death.

And do you really believe 4 out of 10 doctors won't have the vaccination? From a source with unknown provenance.
I find it extremely hard to believe that this app has better data than the nhs and the government. Have they really got more people contributing to it than the nhs with the same national coverage? I don't doubt the app says rates were slowing but it's only as good as the data.

In Cash and Carry 1 doesn't have to go close to anyone.  Where we shop there are 30 cash tills, everyone is masked and there are distance markers though the trollies themselves are long enough to ensure that  ::).  Apparently he and his family met at the Warehouse and went round in a group.  The problem still being 'carriers' with no symptoms

Not sure it's the fault of the tier system, more the number of people flouting the rules. Isn't tier 4 just lockdown by another name? The new varient will have been spread all round the country from people leaving London to infect their families for Xmas.

Even in Tier 4 it's not like proper lockdown. We are still allowed to exercise as much as we want rather than just for one hour a day and we are still allowed to go to work. Dentists, podiatrists, physiotherapists etc are still open too.

Taz - think things are different in different places. In Wales, close contact activities e.g. hairdressers, dentists, physiotherapists are shut. Oh sorry I mislead -  physiotherapists can offer phone consultations 🙄

Different dentists must be operating under different regimes. I am in North Wales and haven't had a Dentist appointment since late 2019. They have been offering appointments since June but that seems only to be for definite problems - no routine check ups. Also  Wales is now under tier 4 lockdown again - mind you surely toothache must count as a medical emergency  ::)

It's strange how it varies. This was a routine check up which should have been in April. Tier 4 lockdown allows for dentists etc to open the same as in England it seems. One day we'll all get back to normal I hope! Hope you are coping ok!

Captain Sir Tom Moore has been admitted to hospital with coronavirus, his daughter has said.

The 100-year-old, who raised almost £33m for the NHS, was taken to Bedford Hospital after requiring help with his breathing, Hannah Ingram-Moore said on Twitter.

She said he had been treated for pneumonia over the past few weeks and last week tested positive for Covid-19.

There was a lot of comments about this on Twitter at the time. I think that if I was 100 and had the chance of a holiday in Barbados, all within the covid rules at that time of course, then I'd be tempted to go too. I think it's his optimistic personality that's got him this far. Not sure where he caught the virus? The holiday was weeks ago now.

The biggest issue is WHO did he catch it from?  This needs to be discovered because it adds to the research ....... grand children in /out of school?  Care workers whilst he had treatment at home for pneumonia?  There's a huge gap in knowledge regarding transmission.

The South African varient is guaranteed to take hold here. We're an island yet seem to have the most porous borders of any country. There are still 20000 people arriving every day. Look at the Isle of Man and New Zealand, they have a normal life. I find it infuriating that we can't do the same.
Title: Re: Coronavirus - anyone got it?
Post by: CLKD on February 04, 2021, 01:36:07 PM
Isle of Man have been in lockdown until yesterday.  They have had deaths too.  Being an Island doesn't seem to make much difference now.

I can understand trying to isolate incomers in Hotels is virtually impossible: 21,000 people arrive by plane daily  :o.  One from Nigeria via Dubai and Doha - walked straight into the airport, out and into a Taxi.
Title: Re: Coronavirus - anyone got it?
Post by: sheila99 on February 04, 2021, 02:27:30 PM
IOM was in lockdown because one new arrival failed to isolate. Wasn't he the one they jailed? When we are in lockdown and people are dying why on earth are we letting 21,000 potentially infected people in every day?? They've had a year to get their act together yet we are still letting them in. Any fool can work out what's going to happen.
Title: Re: Coronavirus - anyone got it?

Yep.  Surely it would be better to have isolated incomers initially rather than let the Virus run riot?  But 'they' are safe behind their doors in Downing Street, well enough to go to Scotland and back !?!?!

Hello ladies.

It amazes me that COVID has been tamed in some countries but seems to be running rampant in ours.  The exact same pathogen yet, as sheila99 says people in New Zealand are living a normal life!  The difference  is the way our country is being governed surely.

Let's hope that the vaccines offer us some protection against the new variants until more tailored ones can be developed. I see that the Johnson and Johnson one is proven to be effective against the SA virus because it was in circulation during the trials.  Until then we all need to behave sensibly to stay safe.

Incidentally a friend of ours died last week from COVID. He had been due to retire next month and his first grandchild is expected soon. So sad.

Take care ladies.

NZ is most definitely an Island. They have had red hot bio security for many years . Taking food in is a no no, I even had a beagle sniffing around my handbag which had briefly had a sandwich in it.  Taking walking boots with any mud on at all isn't allowed either.

I think NZ is probably the ultimate in Islands it is a long way from any other land mass.

Yup my family have it now, we only know because we have a few tests left from the one free box we got, I didn’t want to waste them. Child got it from work, a huge place with no covid procedures now. It’s fine though, adult child had it mild like a cold, hubby and I slightly worse for a day or two. I’ve had worse flu but not in years.

It’s funny reading the posts on NZ. It is my home country. There is one main airport into the country. You can’t get large places landing in the capital city even, because the landing is short and there is the ocean on either side of it! We do not have 24 large airports!! NZ is in a *completely* different position to the UK. They’re not in any way comparable in terms of covid response. At all. Now they’re having a worse time with cost of living, my mum showed me an iceberg lettuce going for $10!! The housing crisis is worse too, their rate of homelessness was already worse than ours. They just don’t have enough money through taxes, there’s not enough people there. They really need a population increase to progress with their housing & health care issues- nothing is free really there, if you needed an ambulance because you had covid you or your family have to pay for it ( except in Wellington ). You just can’t compare Uk & NZ without factoring in a whole lot of complex issues and differences. Also NZers haven’t been living a ‘normal life’ at all! For 2 years they stopped their own people coming home- while they let in movie stars and their entourages. They asked health care professionals from other countries to come and help, promising their families could follow and then going back on that promise. So doctors and nurses going to help a massively under-resourced health care service were then kept from their families. Many left after a year. They didn’t even make exemptions for pregnant New Zealanders stuck outside of the country. I love my home but I think most really don’t have a clue what it’s actually like, especially for poorer and indigenous people. The UK has the kind of  health, benefit and social support that would never be possible there with the current population.

I did a bit of Googling and it appears that Princess has had a LOT of Covid cases in recent cruises (hundreds of passengers and crew on the ship we were on!)
I can see mask wearing making a comeback 😷

I’ll definitely be contacting the Travel Agent we used as a minimum, CLKD.  I never even considered checking any recent reports before we went - it was only when we returned and I googled that it all came to light!  These cruise lines appear to gloss over what is only going to get worse.  Really, 3000 passengers on a ship (at close quarters) with no mandatory mask- wearing is a perfect storm!
The quick turnaround on changeover day offers no time for a deep clean either  :-\

Yep ATB.  We had to produce proof of vaccination, booster if appropriate and a certified negative covid test no more than 2 days b4 boarding. Bottom line is, in theory, someone could produce all of this but still test positive/be infected on the day of boarding. Thing is, if a cold has ripped through a ship in the past, nothing is done. Any covid case confirmed by a cruise ship medical team will see the unfortunate passenger isolated in a cabin for the duration of their cruise  :'( Reckon that's why people try to push through without presenting at the medical centre ???

How many passengers have been affected by D&V on cruises in the past?  Again, too many people in close proximity.  Some cruises haven't been allowed into Port due to D&V .... some elderly have needed to be removed from their holiday to hospital.  Other bugs affect passengers.  It rarely makes headline News, it's usually on the holiday pages when travellers try to get their money back .

If someone now developed just mild cold symptoms on a cruise boat, should they be testing themselves just in case? I had a mild cold a week or so ago. I did do 1 test which was negative and didn't bother again and it cleared up quickly. Probably hay fever.
I don't think that ship staff can now insist on someone testing just because they have sneezed a couple of times.

Day 5 today from my positive test on Sunday and I'm still positive, although the line is lighter.  Still having bouts of feeling extremely cold, and waves of extreme tiredness.  Still got a bit of a cough and every now and again I feel my throat getting sore then I can feel a lot better for a few hours then it hits me again.  Very odd.  My head feels stuffy and I feel even more 'spaced out' than usual!  I 'tasted' a light meal last night and even managed a small glass of wine, but today I can taste nothing.  OH was reluctant to test, although he was feeling a bit poorly last week, however I made him test the other day and he had a faint line compared to my dark one.  Today he has tested negative, so I assume he had it first therefore I am blaming him for passing the plague onto me!!

My daughter has the tests where you just take one swab from the nose and wait 15 mins.

Yes mine are just the nose swabs and 15mins, and they are far easier to use.  I tested negative on Friday and am still feeling poorly.  Sore throat again, achey legs, headache, stuffy sinuses and still have no taste, which I'm really fed up with.  I am struggling to raise the energy to do anything and I even tested again this morning as I thought I might be re infected but it was negative.  It's spreading like wildfire where I live at the moment.

Rest.  Any virus will wipe the sufferer to the ground.  Any1 who walks around with season 'flu, does not have 'flu!!!!

Keep well hydrated.  Viruses won't be rushed  >:(.  Find a shady spot, doze and watch the wildlife.  Dust will be there at the end of the week ;-).

Hope you feel better soon holidaylover, just rest as much as possible. It was day 11 before I could do things without feeling breathless, had a very busy active day yesterday. Still feeling a little tired but starting to feel normal. I’m going to see how I go with a little workout. I overdid it last Friday with outdoor work so just taking things gently.

My awful pains have gone but still coughing up nasty stuff and feeling very tired.  Got dressed today so that’s a step in the right direction.  Cleansheeted bed as I have been dripping with sweat.

Just spoken to BIL in another county and he is croaking, aches all over, washed out and coughing like mad. our symptoms are identical but he says he has done 2 tests and they are negative.  I told him to check date on kit and he says it’s OK.  Can’t understand that.

MayB take plenty of fluids, pain relief and sleep.

The important thing is to do the test and leave for a full 30 mins. B4 a true reading is shown.
The later batch of tests which I got gave a result in 5 to 10 minutes not 30. They were ones which already had the test liquid in the tube, not in a separate container. The max time was 30 mins.

I've been negative now for a week, but still feeling yuk!  Really bad sore throat this morning again, cant get rid of stuffy nose and am absolutely sick of not being able to taste anything.   I love my food and cooking and feel there is no point whilst I feel like this.  I'm cooking for the family, I made chilli last night and had to ask them to taste it for seasoning as there was just no taste at all.  Holiday coming up shortly and I'm scared I'm not going to be able to enjoy our usual treats.  Feeling sorry for myself! :'(

It's a virus and like the others, may well leave sufferer weak, chesty and headachy for days if not weeks.  I was unwell with seasonal 'flu for at least a. week, having woken in the morning with a high temperature, shivering, aching - I didn't know where I was or that I was ill for 36 hours  ::).  It took a week B4 I could consider driving anywhere which ruled out work.

Be kind to yourself!  Rest.  Keep hydrated.  Plenty of Paracetamol and Nurofen.  Potter but don't do 'too much' or you will use up any energy gained.  Don't worry about food unless you 'fancy' anything.

KaraShannon, hope you're feeling a bit better.  My neighbour has been poorly too, with all the common horrid symptoms, her husband and daughter were both positive but she keeps testing negative.  I wonder if she actually had it first without any symptoms and by the time she felt ill, the viral load had passed.  Don't know if that's even possible!  I have been negative now for over a week and still have a stuffy head and achey legs (especially in the morning).  My sense of taste is coming back but I seem to have developed a very sexy (husky) voice that I cant shift!

OH has tested positive today. I was negative yesterday as I did one before going to see my friend who has cancer. Will do another one later. It came on really suddenly a couple of hours after having a tooth extracted. He felt fine while having it done. Just goes to show that there's no guarantee that we're not infectious at any point. I'm against this going back to work/school whilst members are still testing positive.  People should keep away from others until the last person to have been infected is clear for 3 days.  Otherwise it continues spreading the germ.  Of course we may be spreading it if asymptomatic but we can't help that.

It's become more difficult since we have to pay for tests now in England. Of course some people test positive for weeks and nobody seems clear as to when, despite being positive, you're no longer infectious

Apparently it depends upon the viral load.  Cyclists in le Tour are tested every morning, those with symptoms and a+ive test leave the Race.

Those that feel OK and have a low load continue - I don't know how the viral load is tested.

I am not sure what to do! It has been four weeks since I tested positive for covid. I am not feeling well. I have fatigue still, night sweats returned, insomnia, brain fog, I am very moody and feel low. I am not sure if it is a combination of the HRT not working properly or not. I am not doing to well at work because of it and when I mentioned to my manager she just shrugged it off saying oh no not a another one. Do I contact the GP or do I give it a little more time as I have read it can take up to 12 weeks to recover then it can be classed as long covid but not 100% on that. I have been taking vit d and b12 supplements and walk daily but most days I cannot do much. I am not suffering any respiratory problems but my stomach is still upset. Any advice would be gratefully received. X

I’d contact your GP QOR.
My OH had Covid the first time around, he caught the delta strain. Was very poorly in hospital, and the Covid left him with double pneumonia. We thought we were going to lose him.
Anyway, long story short, he recovered. But, still gets out of breath when walking upstairs or when he rushes around. X-ray on his lungs shows they’re all clear. So doc said he may have long Covid. 🤷🏼‍♀️
He’s also tired more, even tho he works nights, I personally think he’s more tired than he should be. So the doc saying he could have long Covid, kinda fits.
I’d ring the doc if I were you, explain everything, and who knows, because of the Covid you’ve had, maybe your hrt isn’t working as it should. For whatever reason. 🤷🏼‍♀️ At least if you tell them, they might be-able to help.
Really hope you soon start to feel better. Keep us informed on how your getting on. Xx

Thank You jillydoll. Sorry about your O/H, glad he has recovered, hopefully he will gain strength with each day. I know people who are still suffering who caught it in 2020. I will contact GP I think. I keep forgetting things, and earlier I put the microwave on with nothing in it and wondered where the food was when it pinged! I am so tired all the time and so hot and achey. It is such a shame re the HRT as I had not long been a new regime that was working perfectly for the first time in about 18 months! So feel back to square one. I will keep you updated. QOR.xx

Have you tried cutting out certain foods? If it's intermittent it's probably an intolerance. Horrible not to feel safe bowel-wise when you're out and about.

The other thing to try is buscopan each day as directed on the packet. I find it helps a lot with my IBS upsets.
