Title: Hair and Beauty 2
Post by: Padine on August 08, 2019, 05:48:52 PM
Hi, I noticed an old thread of same name and Mods suggested a new thread so here it is!

My skin is driving me nuts!! Anybody else not sure what kind of skin they have? Exfoliate seems to be the buzz word right now and I bought a glyconic peel overnight cream thing (Superdrug so dead cheap and only 30ml - nothing lost if it didn't work) Tried it couple of nights ago and wow! My face didn't tingle or peel or crack but it is soooooo baby-bottom smooth! Today it's so humid and my Simple cream spread like water on my face and I look like a shiny blob!  :sweatdrop:  Judith Williams was on QVC this morning and I like her but after buying the Simple range (cleanser, toner, day, night and eye cream, soap and shower gel, shampoo and conditioner - a steal at roughly £50) to tide me over and clear up some dry patches (it's worked after 2 weeks) I'm hesitating about trying something different.

Ps
Sorry 😐 had to abandon post when door bell rang and I jumped out of my skin!
Basically I'd like to start a thread about skin care, what works for you, is luxury worth it or cheaper ok? Simple has worked to help my confused skin recover, but it's a bit boring and rather watery.
What do you use?

I use L'Oréal cleanser and toner, and it's either L'Oréal's moisturiser, or Nivea. But I have to be careful as I sometimes break out with very dry patches on my nose...and believe it or not, but a very cheap moisturiser usually sorts it out, it's from Wilko, and it's £1.....so I've always got a couple tubes ready in the draw...
I don't like the Simple range, they didn't work for me, dryed my skin out terribly.
Oh and I use, Clearasil gentle wash on my face, for sensitive skin....I really like that...

I have recently had to change what I use due to a skin condition diagnosis.

I have Actinic keratosis (solar keratosis), which is as a result of sun damage. It has to be treated as it can sometimes turn cancerous so I am waiting for a follow up appointment. Treatment will probably include scraping or freezing away the affected skin or a caustic cream.

I have had a couple of patches on my nose for about three years which looked like aged spots but sometimes became dry and rough.  This summer other people started to notice and I was talked into going to the doctor by my husband and son.

I now use a factor 50 face cream on my face and neck plus E45  rich and creamy 24hr on my nose. My GP suspects there are one or two other patches emerging on my cheeks.

So do be careful.  Get anything new or persistant checked out.  Also make sure your face cream has sun protection of at least factor 20.

PS. This condition is not always brown,  like age spots. They can be pink or skin coloured as well.

Jaycee, I think I will order some JW as I'm not sure how reliable the reviews are on QVC (could be all the presenters  :great: I didn't used to be cynical but the meno has changed me in many ways!!) That's interesting that Simple dried your skin jillydoll, I have developed little pimpley skin on my forehead in the last 2 days -Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! oh the trials of trying to look better!

Shady, thanks for the warning. I always have used SPF for as  long as I can remember and it amazes me how some brands (not always the cheaper ones either) do not have that. One plus with oily skin is few wrinkles! My hair is now drier so I get away with washing 3 times a week instead of everyday/2nd day.

Reminds me of having face packs in my teens, MinL and I shared one ........ it wouldn't set as we laughed so much  ;D.  It made my skin lovely though recent thoughts from demonologists is that as the skin sheds naturally, we should leave well alone.  Face peeling may well take off too much protection.

A good wash with flannel each morning should be enough.  I put soap on my hands, dip my flannel into soapy water and wipe face and neck.  Job Done.  I noted yesterday that the sides of my face are dry so I need to encourage myself to put on a moisturiser which will probably be sun protection lotion ........ I had a magnifying mirror for a Very Good Look for long hairs  :o and notes the dryness.

I love soaking my feet in hot soapy water.  Followed by a talc which I find soothing.  I have 'clearasil' face wash too .......... twice a week.  We use 'Nivea' too on legs and arms I also like 'vaseline' hand cream in the yellow bottle.

I vary my hair products - I love buying new shampoo  :D

I had lots of skin issues since started peri, finally since around Feb I've been using Dermol 500 prescribed as a wash in the shower, twice daily. Now using Simple deoderant as Mitchum I had used for years as have hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) was causing me to have big, red irritating rings under my armpits. Just use water and occasionally Olay on my face.
I've been using Bumble & Bumble shampoo & conditioner (thickening) on my hair, have tried others to improve condition of my hair between peri & hypothyroid it hasn't been a pretty site.

As an aside - I read about a man who had injections to stop the sweat glands working under the arms  :o

Yeh you can get botox for it! My under arms were never that bad, hands & feet much worse - ended up buying an expensive machine called iontophresis which I use.

That's good news MKG.  Apparently mine has no thickness so am hoping for the cream treatment.  Scraping or freezing doesn't appeal.

Padine,i looked on QVC and i have ordered some Judith Williams Retin day and night cream, the last twice i got thosr with some foam cleancser,in a 3 pack, they didn't have that this  time. but really made my skin look clear, and fresh,
I bought some Elizabeth Grant a while ago, and i didn't like it,i still have some left
Thanks for mentioning it
At the moment i am using just Aldi day and night cream which i like but i prefer Judith Williams, to anything else, and a boots exfoliating cream plus a collagen serum, not in that order
Ihave a nu face microcurrent device which i use about 3 times a week for jowls, not sure if it's doing any good though

I am sitting in bed (it's 11.25pm) wanting to hide away as the “little” pimples have now spread all over my forehead, round my hair line and under my chin. I think it must be that cheap peel stuff cream I used again last night. Simple isn't cutting it anymore so I'm surfing the beauty web ! QVC's TSV is a decleor lavender set so maybe will get that. I didn't mention this but I bought 2 Simple shampoo and 2 Simple conditioners weeks ago and the shampoo is the worst I've ever used. So the 2 unused ones will go to our next Tombola stall! I'm tempted back to no.7 range, my son's girlfriend (a beautician) recommended that along with Olay.
Bought some wonderful conditioning shampoo for brunettes on Amazon-expensive at £12 but worth every penny 😊.
Thanks for making ‘this such an interesting thread!

Don't put anything except warm water and a flannel on your skin for 3 weeks.  Use a light sun-protection if out and about.  Allow your skin to heal.  It does it's own thing and rarely requires much at all.

Simple etc. products can be OK ......... when I buy anything that I don't like it goes to the homeless shelter ;-).   It can get expensive finding something that suits our skin as it changes.

Less Oestrogen levels can cause drying inside and out: so going back to basics might be helpful to allow the skin breathing space.

I have two places on each cheek that seems to get a large spot occasionally, they require squeezing ....... and leave a blotch.

Do you need a brown paper bag this morning or have you surfaced ?  ;)

I haven't used soap on my face for 20 years.  E45 is a good choice but they don't do one with UV protection unfortunately.

Padine, i have only used Boots no 7 foundation for years, but  i had someone call with Oriflame a few months ago, and she gave me some foundation to try, and i  love it, it goes on like silk, need very little, and although costs more than Boots i just get it when on offer, but i can guarantee the reviews about the Judith Williams cream is genuine,i get the retinol one,it is very gentle and hasn't caused any problems for me,i love it

CLKD, I had to go to church this morning and was too stressed to worry about face and hair. When I got home and looked in the mirror  :sigh: what a sight I looked! Hair sticking out everywhere, spots now spread to most of face, going to put the Simple to the charity shop marked nearly new  Jaycee, I'm going to buy JW eventually but get myself sorted out. I washed my face (cleansing cream and muslin cloth) then put on Blue Orchid oil but my face feels hot and odd, I smell divine mind you  :cheer: Time for a big brown bag tomorrow perhaps!

Crocheting a bag as I type.   ;)

Don't put anything onto your skin except warm water!!  [listen to .....  :whist: ]  Let it do what Nature intended, that is to breath and shed scales daily.  After a month look at it with a magnifying mirror and see which areas, if any, require moisturising.

I haven't used makeup for years++ as I can't be bothered to remove it at night.  I loved making up ........

I put stuff into the homeless food bank ..........

there is a box on the top row begins with a bold B  ;)

My daughter is 18. She wears lots of “proper make up”, not just a bit of blusher, lipstick and mascara like me. She uses primers, cleansers, scrubs, etc. Etc.  Recently her skin has not been great and do you know what has worked best? I hate to say it but CLKD's routine of a hot flannel twice a day! I made her take a break from all products and not use wipes, cleansers, toners etc.
I use sudocrem on spots (that's my go to for everything).
So, I wholeheartedly agree with CLKD's flannel and water comments.

That's what I do.  A hot flannel night and morning works very well and it opens up the pores as well.  :)

Whoops -

Glad that your advice worked for your DD AgathaC.  We didn't have products in the 1950s etc.; Nivea cream, cuticura ointment in a green tin  :-\, Vaseline, Dettol  :-X.  Both Grannies had soft skin as they washed with water from the downpipe which ran through a silk stocking into a barrel.  Cameo hand soap.  Or that orange, hard soap  - name escapes me  ::)

Reporting back to CLKD-it's working! My forehead has calmed down and the Simple products are going to Charity shop marked “nearly new”.Found a No 7 BB tinted moisturiser, tried it but looked like an Oompah-Loompah - Eeeekk 😱 . Should wash my blusher brush too as it's .......well, in need of a good wash !
My hair is growing too now and I'm feeling happier with my appearance at last.
Incidentally, been taking high dose of biotin for a month now and my nails are seeing the benefits so I'd give that a go any ladies wanting stronger nails!

I've ordered the JW retinol serum as for £21, inc. P+P (with a £10 voucher from QVC enticing me back!) it's a bargain! I feel daft as I'm getting paranoid about wrinkles and I've never been a vain person.
I rarely wear make up cos like you CK, I can't be bothered with the proper cleansing routine. I do like mascara and realised last week that since the menopause my eye lashes are almost reduced to nothing. Gradually they have become shorter and more sparse. For ages I haven't found a mascara that doesn't smudge and I've tried loads! Any ideas girls?

I use Nivea soft on my face. Tried all the expensive brands and none compare to this it suits my skin. I use Aldi caviar cream on my neck.  It smells gorgeous. As for mascara try Ester Lauder it's good. You can buy little white buds to remove any smudges.

New crisis girls 🥴 the skin on my chest (is that the décolleté?) looks like worn leather and all very wrinkled. I never put cream lower than my collar bone, so I look like my chest doesn't belong to my face. I usually giggle at myself being a bit vain but feel the opposite now. I'm surprised at myself but turning 60 in June has made me feel very depressed (and ashamed)
We have recently heard of a few sudden deaths of distant friends - their relatives have something to be depressed about, not silly me with trivial worries. What's happening to me?

Hi, I personally don't like simple products. I use a Nivea cream at night, it's in a blue small tub, can't remember it's proper name, but it's for sensitive skin, and it's almost like a balm, too heavy for daytime, but good for night time, I've the same problem with my chest area, the deep set wrinkles drive me mad, but when they're we'll moisturised, they don't look so bad....also, I found that every night, I use Vaseline on my lips, and rub whatever's left on my décolletage, and it really helps...🙂..for your face, I wouldn't use any kind of soap, instead I use clearasil face wash, it has tiny little bits in it, so it's a scrub too, and I love that....
To get rid of make up and dirt, I use L'Oréal cleansing milk, and toner, (they're in pink bottles) maybe 3/4 a week....they last for ages.....xx
Oh, why are you ashamed of your age? Don't be, I understand what you mean tho, it's like how did we get here? 😄.....I'm 55 in Dec, and sometimes I think, omg, I'm FIFTY FIVE!!!....wtf.......😂 xx

Oh Jilly, you're a youngster at 55 🤗! I know what you mean tho 😦 I have never had a wrinkle on my face at all, thank goodness for my oily skin! My neck+ chest are a different story and I don't like the vain person I seem to have turned into 👿. Thanks for your Vaseline tip, I use Euricin on my feet so will try that on wrinkled chest, the consistency is same as Vaseline but the tube is a huge 200mls so never ending! Will report back.
Using Garnier micellar cornflower organic right now and it feels so cooling and calming, smells of a French lavender field but not overpowering-I love it. JW retinol serum and Olay regenerist cream (1/2 price in Boots, day, night and eye  cream all for less than £30 + double points 😇 ) CLKD's tips sorted out my spotty skin 4 weeks ago - this is just the info I was hoping for on this thread!
Off to grease up my wrinkley chest now and put on warm
pjs, hot water bottle and a good book 📖 nite-nite, sleep well!

Hello again  :veil: isn't it cold outside? My lips and hands are very sensitive to the change to cold weather, I have enough lip salve to set up a shop and I have become allergic to something in the No.7 lip crayon thingey that was fine in the summer. Astral now do a Shea butter cream which is very sticky, but lasts for hours on my arms and legs and the smell is divine  :yipi:

Just thought I'd report back about Biotin. I took a large dose every day for 9 or 10 weeks back in June/July and my nails were wonderful. When it was finished, I didn't bother with anymore as I thought my nails would stay in the same good condition. Went for a shellac gel when we went on holiday in Sept and since that stuff came off (I was lazy and picked it off - very bad move) my nails are on the worst side of awful (if such English is allowed!) I'm going back on the Biotin in an effort to rescue nails for Christmas. Can anyone recommend a good cuticle oil and do you think it really makes a difference?

I have been taking Biotin for my hair and nails, nails grew very strong and they were quite flaky at the beginning ,due to me using glue on nails, they were terrible, biotin made a big difference
Sadly hasn't helped with my hair loss, but the hair I do have has grown and keeps growing, and I mean within days, I cut my fringe last Friday as it was getting in my eyes ,had to do it again today, could hardly see for it
I have cut my hair 4 times in as many months and it is growing like weeds

Hello ladies, I could talk all day and night about hair and beauty. I used to own a beauty salon but meno made me give it up. Long story, but hey ho, things move on. I haven't read the whole thread but see on this page that chest skin is a problem. The chest, or décolleté as the marketing debts refer to it, is even more sensitive than the face. Always always always do to your chest what you're doing to your face. There's virtually no oil glands there and as we age, sun exposure and lack of skincare/spf means this area really suffers. If you're putting a face mask on, put it here, ditto exfoliators, moisturisers, serums etc. Go easy on exfoliators and toners on this area though. Put a face mask on the chest and sleep with it overnight, really helps.

Hello KiltedCupid, thanks for that info! What a pity you had to give up your salon, I hope you're feeling better with things now  :bighug:

I smugly thought I was being successful with only a little visible aging skin - I've used an eye cream since I was 30 (30 years ago  :() and was always fastidious about cleansing/toning/moisturising but since I turned 50 and peri/meno since then, I can't be bothered much with the cleansing, as for a mask?? I tutor privately and when first retired from class teaching, I planned to have a monthly salon visit treat......................well, so much for that.

What are others' routines taking the grime of the day off before bed? And KiltedCupid, can you recommend a soap or foaming cleanser+water which won't dry the skin? My dry skin problem was solved by using Clarins Blue Orchid oil last year, now I won't be without it (tutor money used for that fund!)

Saw Gale Hayman products on QVC yesterday - is it worth all the money? Avon do a similar lipsalve for about £7 which I liked (the No 7 lip stuff does not work for me so I'm reluctant to move away from good old vaseline now!) I don't have the problem of dry lips when on holiday in the sun............but my wrinkly decollete is on show then - us women can never win!  :boobs:

Hi Padine - I currently use the Superdrug Brightening Hot Cloth Cleanser. It's a dupe of the Liz Earle cleanser which is a dupe of the Eve Lom cleanser!  It's often on a 3 for 2 and comes with a little muslin cloth. I honestly believe this is the best way to clean your face unless you have a serious skin condition which precludes this. It also easily removes mascara.

I can recommend budget and branded products so ask away!

Yep, Hot cloth cleanser - definite dupe for Liz Earle!  ;)
I know you check out QVC Padine from your posts - have a look at Prai neck and decollete cream - there is a night one now as well as the day cream and it is so popular it is coming ever bigger pots so good value and you can really plaster it on! "from under the bust to the back of the ears" is the quote they use!  I read somewhere that it is the best selling neck cream in the UK and some other countries.  Daily Mail, Cosmo, vogue, beauty bloggers all the big magazines have written about it and its not new been around for a while so tried and tested.  The Beauty Bible also rate it.  I think you may have just missed a TSV but I cant remember whether it was that or a Big Deal?  Kathy Kangas who runs Prai used to work for one of the really prestigious face cream people, almost as high up as the mega mega expensive La Crème de la mer at £200 a pot.  They use same ingredients some which are proven, although a lot of face cream ingredients arn't proven - retinol is proven and so is matrixol.  I think Prai has both. Definitely not that expensive against Gatineau, Decleor, Perricone or Elemis etc

Gale Hayman also been going 25 years but I haven't tried it as don't have a lip problem.  These things don't stay about unless they are good and as you know you can use 30 days and return - worth a go!

Have been trying Biotin as well as magnesium for a while but both seem to give me the runs??
xx

I bought the Nordic Hair Volume Gummies in Holland and Barrett in an attempt to do something to improve my fine flat thin hair. I have been taking over a week. Like lovely sweets -if nothing else they are good for that.

Ahaaaaa...yes! I saw a customer last week and she mentioned that she had had to take someone to court and the stress had been awful...it had made her hair fall out. But she had been taking collagen for a while to try and help it grow back healthy. So I had a closer look at her skin and hair and it both looked amazing.

I got some collagen gummies from Holland & Barrett and have been taking them since the start of November. I'll report back in a month or six weeks to let you know how it's going.

I've also been taking evening primrose oil. I remember taking it for a good long stretch of time in my 30s I think, and I used to have customers commenting on how amazing my skin was.

I use the hot cloth method with whatever I'm using to take my MU off at night. First cleanse: micellar; second cleanse: creamy cleanser or balm, and hot cloth method.

I use something with salicylic acid as a moisturiser, as I have clogged pores. I've always had oily skin.

And I use castor oil on my eyelashes and eyebrows every night - sometimes during the day as well if I'm home or just not wearing any eye MU.

Masking, depends on if I feel like my skin feels dehydrated or in need of a deeper clean. I'll sometimes go for the deep clean and then a hydrating one after.

As I've gotten older I've become more and more interested in skincare and eating well for good skin. I think I took it all for granted when I was younger. But I realise now that I'm also lucky, I have inherited my mum's incredibly youthful looking skin.

I am seeing a dermatologist for my hair loss, and he said not to waste money on all these special shampoos etc, as they might help existing hair but not hair growth, if it's going to come back it wil,if not nothing can make it,except minoxidil, but will fall out again when stopped
He said my hair will grow back, but often a long wait

I drink 2 of the Superdrug (I love Superdrug) energy release effervescent tablets everyday, usually with meals. They have a high biotin content and all the other B's in one go so it's easy to do. I did have some hair loss a couple of years ago and I think this helped. Also use their vit c fizzy tablets as vit c is really important for skin health.

I could be imagining things and my eyesight is defo a bit more ‘soft focus' than it used to be, but for any ladies using oestrogen gel, whatever's left on my hand after rubbing in I mix into my moisturiser, it seems to be making my skin more glowy. I will continue.

I am not convinced that my hair loss is stress related,i stopped my livial for a month and hair seemed to stop falling so tried again and hair is falling again, not as much but i have patches of loss now where i didn't before so i am going to stop now altogether, can't risk losing more hair, really fed up now
I wont be able to go anywhere at Christmas, not too bothered really as Christmas isn't my favourite time. but supposed to be going to a buffet :'(

jaycee...I really sympathise about the hair loss. I had a patch of alopecia a few years back which I think was stress related as it has improved.

Have you tried wearing printed head bands/scarves? I got into these at the time and still wear them out quite a bit. I bought some from Amazon (Deshow - vintage flower print ones). You can either wear them across your forehead or on top more ' Alice band' style. I used to think it wasn't my style but had loads of nice comments with people asking me where I got them.

Squeaker ,head bands would be no good to me,as my hair loss is mainly at the back, crown and below
I have a nice corduroy peaked cap which i have seen  selling recently in M&S, my hair loss is mainly at the back ,crown down to middle so wouldn't cover it sadly, and no sign of any regrowth
My dermatologist was going to ring me last week to let me know if he was going to do a skin biopsy, still waiting

There are lots of ethnic styles out there that you could adopt.  Have a wander round your local market stalls and get ideas?

Hey Jaycee - I don't know whether you would like them, you might start yelling eeeuww! ??? but it might be worth considering if you are really desperate. There are things called "toppers" and you can find them on ebay and they are made with silk pads so they are soft against the head and real hair and not too expensive and you can home dye them to your own hair colour easily.  They are very real and you can't tell if someone is wearing one like with the synthetic pieces. I have one because my hair is thing round the temples and is baby fine.  They are great for anyone who is thinning down the middle where their parting used to be but now looks like Moses parted the red sea!

Jaycee - what Ladybt recommends is a really good idea. You kind of add them to/on top of your own hair. My friend uses one and it has made a lot of difference to her self confidence. I did not realise how many celebrities use them - many women “our” age supplement their hair with a partial hair piece because it makes them look younger. You don't have to get a big, full one, just a small supplement like Ladybt says xxx

CLKD not sure what you mean by ethnic styles that i could do with bald patches showing?

Ladybt,  and Agatha .yes i am looking into those now,i did send for a couple to try from ebay but they seemed very thin, and i don't think would cover enough
Also asked a local lady who has a shop selling these things, but she said she didn't think i had enough at the front to clip onto, she mainly sells extensions, so might have to order them in
I actually think she couldn't be bothered as i do have a lot of hair at the front
The ones i have looked at in wig shops are very expensive. but going to have to do something,as i can wear a hat outside ,but not if i have to go anywhere ,like at Christmas maybe
Title: Re: Hair and Beauty 2
Post by: Ladybt28 on November 26, 2019, 07:06:43 PM
Jaycee - if you don't have much at the front to clip to and feel that they would be a bit "unsafe" you can get the clips quite easily.
Just sew on a couple on the sides of the pad near the front where you ha more hair with a couple of stitches. I got what's called a "halo" a little while back which are the longer extensions on a wire and it feels unsafe so I just added a couple of clips near where the wire attaches to the hair and it's much better.  Just adapt as you go along.

The ones on ebay come in varying weights, they are measured in grams - just check that you are getting the heavier weight ones (they have more hair!). Obviously they are more expensive but they are nowhere near as expensive as using a wig shop or a specialist hair extension place. x

LADYBT,I DO HAVE PLENTY OF HAIR AT THE FRONT,ALSO FROM THE CROWN, LIKE A WADGE OF HAIR WHICH TO AN EXTENT COVERS THE BALDY LOOKING PATCHES,HARD TO EXPLAIN REALLYIT IS UNDER THIS WADGE OF HAIR IT IS ALMOST BARE, BUT WHEN IT PARTS THE BARE PATCH SHOWS
lOOKING FROM THE FRONT, NO ONE WOULD REALISE WHAT THE BACK IS LIKE,I LOOK TO HAVE A NORMAL HEAD OF HAIR LOOKING AT ME FROM THE FRONT
OH dear, just noticed caps was on, too tired now to go through it all again,

Hi Health+Beauty Girls!
Been feeling low for last few weeks and feel rubbish today after having a horrible cold last week, which seemed to make inside my nose feel really sore, like there were little razors up it. My nose was stuffed up at night so I couldn't sleep (the amitriptyline only made it drier, blurred my eyes so I couldn't read but could I drop off before 5am? Not often! Anyway, a busy week ahead of lunches out, singing in concerts and I'm willing myself to get better!

Moaning over and must report that the Biotin (I took a large dose for 4 weeks) has not worked on my scruffy, thin and flaky, breaky nails but my hair is so shiney and a deep, rich brown colour, enhanced by Superdrug's toner eqivalent shampoo. I smother it on dry hair, leave it for 30 mins then partially wash it out, add conditioner then gently rinse it for as long as I can (before Mr. P reminds me about the hot water!)

A perfume question - I love Annais Annais but it only comes in eau de toilette - anything similar to it in smell in an eau de parfum?

Hope everyone is ok?

             Thanks, Padine xx

Hi Padine,
Sorry to hear you felt so rough, the cold going about at the moment is a right nasty!  The flakey breaky nail thing will take a while to show up because the new stronger growth will come from the bottom, as the old stuff grows upwards and you have to bear in mind they say it takes nearly a year for your nail to grow from bed to top!
I have found too much biotin and magnesium seems to give me the runs :(
Can't answer the perfume question sorry - I'm kind of ok, things have been very very stressful and I have been the most anxious I have been in about a year which wasn't a very pleasurable reminder of times past but it will pass.

jaycee- all I can contribute to the hair loss conversation is that the hair follicles, if they are there in the scalp, need to be stimulated into growth and then the biotin will help them grow.  As I understand it the biotin doesn't help them grow on their own, plus if the follicles are dead in the scalp for some reason then there is nothing you can do to revive them.
I used the caffeine type shampoos or gels to stimulate growth on my temples but you have to do it consistently otherwise they stop growing.  It's a right pain I know!  :(

Can I mention nails again? I have one nail which split in the middle and has never recovered. This first happened at my brother's wedding 26 years ago. I have tried everything but this nail will not stay whole. My nails are very ridged and thin but my diet is rich in veg and good things, so the old idea of lacking in vitamins and minerals does not apply here! Gel nails strengthen all my nails but even removing the gel properly results in a damaged nail plate so I'm destined to dull, short nails.
Just thought I'd mention this and we could share beauty myths about "too good to be true" things we know to be myths due to our age and experience ladies!

That is probably damage to the nail bed which emerges from the cuticle.  So it is unlikely to heal.  A small bang can cause damage.

Post by: Ladybt28 on December 18, 2019, 01:17:14 PM
Hi Padine- have you tried something like OPI Nail Envy or Perfect formula gel coat (look on the web)  I was a nail biter for 40 years and used the stick on nails for 25 of them,  but now I have ok nails even though I have had terrible infections and the nail beds are a bit damaged. (Mind you I just have one thumb I nibble, cant seem to stop altogether). I have had gel nails for a few special occasions but I find they damage my nails and have stopped being tempted by them now because it takes 4 months for the to recover once they come off.  I use both the above.  My nails tend to flake rather than split and these seem to seal them and stop it happening as long as I continue using them every week.

The gel nails look so good and I know it is so tempting to keep covering them up when they come off because your own look so dull as you say but if you can break the cycle, it would be better. x

Ladybt28.i apparently have some fine hair there and also use caffeine shampoo, and massage my scalp, but nothing is happening
My dermatologist has asked me to go and see him again on friday,he did mention a scalp biopsy the last time i saw him, so might be connected
I have used Biotin for over  a year now, and my remaining hair is growing so fast ,it's like it is compensating for what i don't have

Ladybt, I have tried nail envy, Sarah Hansen, Boots cheap+pricey nail rescue stuff and nothing works. I will look at the Power Gel you suggest. I bought (2m of it  ;D !) of a nail fixer elastoplast/sellotape stuff, called Silk, which you cover the split with and it is supposed to heal the tear. I can't get the right size of bit cut to stick it on (lost the bit I tried when making egg sandwiches for a Rural tea and worried myself sick that it would turn up in the president's sandwich! When taking my boots off (once home from this outing), I found the sticky bit stuck to my sock  ::) what we ladyees do to try to look good  ;D

yes I know how Silk works!  Flaming fiddly!  Aren't you supposed to coat the stuff with a hardner after you stick it on?   Perfect formula is only on our well known shopping channel and by the way Hairfix hair stimulator is on offer at the the moment. x
Title: Re: Hair and Beauty 2

I managed to cut a bit of Silk the right size for my nail and using very sharp (craft) scissors is the answer with this fiddly stuff. I put 2 coats of the Rimmel nail nurse on it and so far it's looking OK. :)

I know what you mean about the gel nails being so tempting but the damage caused by using/removing them is'nt worth it imho. If I can remember to put on rubber gloves when using detergents, cleaners etc that should help and hand cream whenever I remember too! My mother always had rough, red hands - that memory is enough to make sure I've always got hand cream within easy reach!

Our favourite TV chanel has had more than usual beauty TSVs recently, or is it just my imagination? The hair products look wonderful but if I used the volumising ones, my hair would be twice as wide as my head! Superdrug products produce wonderful shine on my hair, their wash-in colour shampoo works really well for me and there's no residue colour rubbed onto my white towel afterwards. Plus the small price makes it win-win.

Hi Padine

A bit late I know, I don't normally come into this thread.
Anyway, the perfume question:
Calvin Klein, Beauty. It's Parfume, not toilette. And it lasts all day on me.
I use it probably everyday. And it's lovely.
Think you can buy a bottle for about £25 , if you have a Savers anywhere near you anyway.
It's great for everyday, and I keep my more expensive perfumes for ‘best', like when I go out. Oh and it's floral...x

Jillydoll, I will look out for the perfume you mention, not heard of that CK one befoe , thanks for the idea.

                                                                    Happy New Year Girls!  :vibe:

Well, the Biotin I've been taking for about 3 months now seems to be working and my hair is glossy again and my nails seem to have recovered! My new year's resolution is to have no more salon gel-polishes, as they seem to damage my nails no matter how they are removed. The Silk repair papery stuff worked eventually (I cut a bit exactly the same size as my nail using very sharp craft scissors and put a coat of Rimmel's Nail Nurse over it immediately and it stuck like Superglue - job done!)

My new question is does anyone use Avon? I read last week that the Body Shop have bought them over now and they are increasing their (Avon's) environmentally friendly. I want to try some trial sizes skin care products and the Avon Platinum range looks very attractive and just what I need (at a price I can afford too)

One other thing which started 10 days ago is if I rub my cheek or forehead or chin, the moisturiser "bobbles" and rubs onto my clothes like dandruff. I've tried putting on less cream but don't want to stop putting on a serum before I moisturise - all I can think of is I'm applying too much of both, but I've cut down on both.

             Thanks Padine xx

Hi Girls,
Well, I've not been taking the biotin regularly for the last 6-8 weeks and my hair and nails definitely are proving it! My hair is frizzy at one side, looks dire I feel like an old lady. My nails are not too bad if I keep them shortish, but tried to grow them a bit last week and they split at the end, the split one wouldn't grow complete. I now have hearing aids and although my dear husband and friends say that they can't see them at all (I do believe them) I'm going to try to grow my hair (again!) to chin length - any tips on how to grow hair faster? (apart from not having it cut!)

;D or it could be a conspiracy theory - we have a thread about hair cuts too ....... my fringe will get chopped eventually or I'll nip to the sheep farm for some clippers ;-)

I've found that with all this hand washing I need more hand cream - Crabtree and Evelyn - smells lovely and so soothing.  My shampoo however leaves my hair flat  :-\

Oh CLKD, you've cheered me up  :foryou:  my hands are like sandpaper and my feet have what seems like a wide piece of the heavy elastic nylon slacks my Gran used to wear!! That's on each heel AND my left elbow has rough skin which I could grate cheese on  :kick: My hair is like candyfloss (but, the upside to that is I no longer need to wash it every day)

Now sheep clippers - that's a new suggestion but I'd probably cut my ear off!! I found a brand new Babyliss curling tongs which had belonged to my Mum-in-law, so thought great! I'll try out that new addition to my collection of heated hair appliances. Well, burnt forehead, burnt ears and burnt fingers was all I achieved with that new idea (and the candyfloss hair I'm guessing too?) My son and 18month old grandson Facetimed us this morning before I was dressed and son says "Oh look, Granny has bad bed hair, doesn't she look funny?   :hapij:" oh yes, I've cheered up someone else's day again!
But, I don't have covid 19 or know of anyone who has it so we have to laugh. Off to find the haircut thread ......................hope everyone is as well as they can be.

Just found this thread...oh I love a hair and beauty thread!

For those with hard skin on their feet....just an thought...but those battery operated foot sander things are fantastic.  Also use Scholl cracked heel cream (contains urea..my foot man says that foot cream has to contain urea for it to be any good)  I have a couple of friends who walk a lot..and I mean a LOT as in 10 miles a day plus and they swear by Tropic Foot Polishing Pebble
https://tropicskincare.com/products/polishing-pebble

I have no affiliate links to Tropic by the way..although I swear by their smoothing skin cleanser, toner and flannel but didn't like their eye cream...I use "Windows of the Soul" by Temple Spa....I commented on how well a friend looked about a year ago and she recommended it...it's fantastic.  Not cheap but lasts for AGES as you only need a tiny bit.

Hair wise...I am always looking for hair products.  Apparently, according the "The best thing since sliced bread" on Radio 4 caffeine hasn't been proved to help hair loss and all the shampoos which say they help it probably don't, apparently it's stimulation of the follicle (so would caffeine help with that?) and diet.  Having said that I use Pantur shampoos and am sure they have made a bit of a difference to my hair which is so much thinner and finer than it used to be....dam meno.

I am not on HRT....but never say never as I am teetering on the brink with hot sweats, anxiety and doctor has recommended it but now worried won't be able to get patches (I worry about everything these days!) Funnily enough my anxiety has been a little better since the lockdown..probably because I am in the house, in my own bubble, no life pressure, not at work physically and for my own mental health avoiding most of the news and media .  Not being irresponsible or unfeeling by the way as am making bags for NHS nurses, getting food for aged parents and neighbours...omg I hate the food shop  I just get extremely anxious and depressed when I was listening/watching/reading news every day...am depending on partner now to filter it mostly.

As you say...with covid...our woriries and anxieties about meno and looks seem trivial, but I guess we are just taking our minds off it.

Hi Emm225 and welcome to the discussion! Thanks for sharing your ideas and tips. As for HRT, go for it girl! Especially if your Dr advises it too. Like you I swithered and after an unbearable start to my retirement, decided to go for it and now I can't remember what a hot sweat was like. If only the "hair and beauty" bit was so easily sorted..................I have a problem in that I feel I want to use the same brand for everything, but I know that doesn't need to be true - any idea how to overcome that? Anxiety comes in all shapes and forms and like you Emm, I'm not too worried about Lockdown - I want us to keep safe -and I don't have to psych myself up when I meet people right now.

Back to hair and beauty - I have gone completely naked of all make up in the last 3 weeks. I heard somewhere that the eyebrow fashion for 2020/21 (and the future) is the thin eyebrows again -YAY!!  :hapij: I have 2 mascara type eyebrow gels, an eyebrow tattoo paste thing and an eyebrow pencil in my make up bag, which have not been used this month; my eyelashes are so sparse now it's hard to get mascara on them and not all over my eyelids too; I have more lipstick than a small shop but my lips seemed to have shrunk and lip pencil is useless as it makes me look like a shop dummy! The only thing I seem to get right is my pjs and perfume! (nothing happening there like it used to either  :bed: - I wish )

So, feeling gloomy which is not what anyone wants to read about on a thread entitled "Hair and Beauty" and especially as you say Emm - Covid-19 is a REAL problem and the menopause is nothing compared to all worries about that. Stay well.

Oh CLKD  :thankyou:  I ventured over to the "Other" web page (for older ladies but young at heart) to ask about grey hair, ended up commenting once or twice and felt unwelcome (my own sensitivity in overdrive again). On MM I feel part of a big family where we don't make other posters feel like they are the left out one at school because they are different  :'(

So, can anyone help me with this one? My hair has not been dyed for about 12 months, I have no grey roots but the hair at my temples is definitely grey (as are eye brows, some eye lashes and my lady-hair)If I pull my hair back as if to put in a ponytail it is salt+pepper. I thought I'd go gradually grey but my hair has been like this for 10 years! I want to be more grey - can I do anything at home, what could I buy? I've dyed my medium dark brown hair for last 20 years or so and decided at 60 (11 months ago) not to anymore. It's now gone brassy which is awful, but I'm not going dark again. Any ideas girls?

I used to colour my hair or get my hairdresser to put hi-lights in, but now it's gone salt/pepper which I don't mind.  I had a go at my fringe last week with some scissors and yesterday took a small blade to the top layer - no one has laughed. Yet  ;)

How about using boiled tea bags - let the water cool - the longer the bags are left in the water the darker it will be: add to a small amount of shampoo, apply and leave.  Then rinse out gently?

Some colours go brassy in the sunshine.  Maybe your local store has a wash-in/out colour or specific shampoo for 'brassy' appearances, if you can believe that those might work?  Go online and see what's out there?

Let us know  ;D

I try spreading foot cream (or similar) on my feet with socks about 3 and/or 4 nights before I change the sheets then the night before sheet change I slather it on as it does wet the sheets a bit and the sheets need changing.
It's a passion-killer so no  :bed: with socks on ladies!!

Seriously, you need to slough the hard bits before the cream for best results. You know, I never had this problem when I was working, so I reckon it's always wearing trainers nowadays that goes for the feet. I used to go to work with smart flat shoes and walking boots in the winter (I worked in a country school where we had lots of bad winter weather, so getting stuck in ice+snow was quite commonplace - not for stilettos really!  ::) )

I wore wellies for years and had a row of small corns on the right foot and cracked heels.  DH is putting 'Nivea' on my heels every night .....

I HATE going bare footed.  I HATE grass or sand under my feet  :-X

Just an idea, but I find to put Germoline rubbed in very well helps most of all (but it's too expensive to plaster on generously) I also rub it into my left elbow when it gets very rough  (but does nothing for one of the knuckles on my left hand??)
I too hate going bare-footed and hate the feel of shoes without socks.

Is 'germoline' still green?  My paternal Gran swore by it  ::)

It's white cream now in a tube but still has the distinctive smell! I used to love the round tin, it was SO sticky!

Germolene was definitely pink and in a very sticky tin! Luckily I didn't fall over too much but I remember having that pasted on my skinned knees as a young tomboy. Now it still smells like germolene but it's an easily absorbed cream that has a local anaesthetic in it. Fab stuff.

So....I'm very lucky. I have a short haircut which I normally get trimmed every 4 weeks. Husband is a neat freak that does EVERYTHING meticulously. I persuaded him to use his clippers on the back of my hair and he did an awesome job. He wouldn't dare cut my fringe though so I did that with scissors the following day. It'll help for a few more weeks till we can get back to our trusty hairdresser!

Nails aren't too bad and am managing myself with lots of cuticle oil and keeping them as short as usual (I do lots of typing and no, not just on here before you ask  ;D) I've worn make up only a few times since lockdown. Skin-wise Emm is right the Tropic range is lovely although I'm now using a mix of things. Coconut oil is gorgeous for cleansing, just massage it on to face and flannel off - takes off mascara, everything! Cheap version of a famous hot cloth cleanser in my book...

You will laugh at this. My mum saw in a newspaper that these little foot peel things you can buy in the pound shop are good. Supposed to do an expensive spa-style skin peel within a week. I sat there with each foot in a polythene boot with sort of pepperminty lotion slathered on, for over an hour. After showering it off, I watched and waited for the magic to happen and had virtually given up hope when I got up one morning it was OH MY GOD...like a ruddy snake.. baby soft feet afterwards but it did take a full few days to remove. If you're a picker......... :whist:

 :hapij:   I'd read about those peeling feet things too but thought Nah, don't believe it! But sounds like a good idea - can I get them on Amazon?

The Biotin update is after back to taking 2 each day my nails are longer than ever and hard too but, skin on the back of my hand is like leather (think it's the alcohol in the hand sanitizer the shops provide, at least it means it's trying to kill the germs!!) My hair too is getting into a better state, I'm trying to wash it only 3 times a week as it is very dry. I don't mind it being dry as it has always been so greasy which I hated.

I'm taking a large dose of Evening Primrose oil daily which could be adding to improved skin, hair all round. It makes me feel a little brighter anyway so will keep taking it till July and see if there's any difference.

Hi Padine!

I've just checked on Amazon and you can indeed buy the foot peel things there - they are called Derma V10 :)

Great update on the nails, I think I need to start taking some Biotin as mine are flaky as heck. They used to be so strong but not any more, and I do all the right things like never washing up without gloves etc. Strange you say about hair changes as although mine has never been dead straight, I now have a pronounced wave/curl which has got much stronger in peri. Use a good hand cream as well as foot cream?

Does anyone have to use a new product almost immediately ?  I bought baby shampoo this morning and really do need to try it later  ;D and if I have new bubble bath, even if I have 3 open already, have to try the newest  ::)

CLKD

My shelf along the back of the bath has a selection of shower gels used on a "what do I fancy today" basis...and yes, if I buy a new product, it gets used regardless of whatever else is on the go  ;D

Hand creams I struggle with a bit as my cats are finicky monkeys and won't let me stroke them if my hands have anything remotely scented or anything greasy on them. The only one they will tolerate is O'Keefes Working Hands. One of them sleeps tucked into my side too so can't even do that bed time. Small sacrifice   :cat88: (bit of a cat lady hence my name haha).x
