I'm interested to learn if it's possible to conceive during peri?
-
I was at school with a person who was younger than their nieces/nephews because the mum had been “caught out†during menopause, having believed she had an abdominal problem she turned out to be pregnant. She had already had children before, of course ( hence the nieces and nephews).I believe it is generally possible to get pregnant. They said to use contraception until one full year period-free when I was at peri stage.
However, I guess it all depends on your personal circumstances as to your own likelihood. I expect someone with medical expertise will let you know the likelihood.
-
Yes it is possible to conceive in peri. Contraception has to be used for a year after the last period if you want to avoid a pregnancy -
and two years I believe if you are under the age of 50. The oldest naturally occurring pregnancy in the UK was 59 I think and she was on HRT.
A lot of women put their pregnancy symptoms down to the menopause. I work with a lady whose neighbour was 24 weeks pregnant at the age of 51 before she finally discovered that the tiredness, indigestion and bladder problems were down to a pregnancy and not the menopause. She hadn't had a period for eight months before becoming pregnant. The baby was fine, once they got over the shock, both mum and dad enjoyed their surprise addition to the family.

Wow! Thanks for your replies ladies

I have to ask... do you think you might be?

Hi Tracy55
:welcomemm:
Just to add that it will also depend on what HRT you are taking, as well as your age - the younger you are the more likely? The usual types of hRT do not normally suppress ovulation and therefore your own cycle can carry on in the background. Also some HRT types can partially suppress ovulation - or in some women - eg those who use the Mirena coil, and some of the very high dose oestrogen HRT types.

My Aunt had a baby when she was 45 ;-)
-
I was advised that it is possible to get pregnant during peri and I think that's one of the reasons why they suggest the Mirena coil
My doctor did suggest I take extra precautions when I started the Elleste Duet 1mg, to be honest sex was the last thing on my mind ;D

Taz- no I'm not, but have been trying for years to get pregnant
I just wondered if I still could 😊
-
Just adding a question on to this. If someone was to fall pregnant, and was still taking femoston would they then skip periods?
X
-
It's unusual to still continue with periods while pregnant I would think as the shedding of the womb lining would also shed the pregnancy?
Taz x
-
Basically I've missed two periods, got tender breasts, feeling nauseous, tired etc. But was told it's very unlikely I would fall pregnant. So it's just wishful thinking lol. I might take a test tho just to clarify it in my head. X
-
Get a test done? Then maybe Jesh keep a mood/food/symptom diary to see how you feel on a daily basis?
-
That's a sensible idea. :)
I just make myself feel silly for taking a test when the docs say it's such a low chance. X
-
Don't feel silly. Your feelings are justified! Why worry when there are tests available?
My periods waxed and waned for years - several months without a bleed then several ........
-
From the earlier posts Jeshiekah I see that you are in your twenties and that you had chemo for cancer. The odds of falling pregnant after chemo are far greater if you are under 30 at the time of treatment. Please let us know the outcome of the test!

Thanks lovelies. I just don't like getting too excited as it's probably nothing! Xxx
-
Ok I have another question!! Does femoston have any way of interfering with a pregnancy test? Could it show a false positive for example??? Xx
-
OR could the hormone the pregnancy test is looking for be elevated anyway due to menopause?!
I just got a positive test and I don't want to get too excited if it doesn't mean anything. :o
-
I think that the result can differ depending on what age you are although this may change due to the fact that you have had chemo in the past leading to early menopause. It seems quite complicated and I would think you definitely need the advice of a GP on this as you can't accurately measure the amount of HCG you are producing and how quickly it is rising which seems to be the definitive test?
I think that you are wise to be cautious but wait your update with bated breath!

Agreed. I'm going to phone my HRT clinic first today as they probably know a bit more. If nothing from them then I'll go to my GP. Sometimes the HRT clinic is a bit too busy. I think I need gradually blood testable or something to find out what's going on. Xx
Thank you all for your support and words though it's been so helpful x
-
Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

-
I'll definitely let you know how I get on. Tried calling my hrt clinic at Uclh this morning burn no one ever answers. Grr! I thought it'd be best to go through them rather than my GP as they know my background a bit more. But if they don't answer it looks like I'll have to just call GP. The only other thing I could do is call my cancer clinic?! X
-
Take a fresh urine sample to your Practice Nurse in the morning?
-
So the HRT clinic said it's fine to go through GP so I'm going to see them tomorrow. And registered with the maternity thing around here, it's all new to me as we've only moved here recently too. Extra confusion. Basically they'll now sort out the tests I need to confirm the pregnancy xxx
-
Best wishes for tomorrow jeshiekah, hope all goes well for you x
-
Thank you :)
I just spoke with a doctor at the HRT clinic over the phone. She seems to think that the tests are definitely positive and wants to get me into their clinic for a scan. So gonna get a call tomorrow to arrange that. But also going to see my GP so he knows what's going on too.
Thank you everyone on here for being so supportive. I don't know what I'd do without this forum sometimes!! X
-
Do let us know :-\
-
Got a scan booked for tomorrow and had bloods drawn today! So will let you all know when I knoooow xx
-
I've been wondering how you were getting on. Will check back each day!

I'm 11 ish weeks pregnant! Crazy. I can't believe it! Saw it on the screen and heard it's little heartbeat. :) being put into a clinic at Uclh to do a proper 12 scan and possibly have some tests done there cos of my history. So amazing. Xxx
-
Wow.....congratulations xxxxx
-
You do sound pleased - shall we start knitting ;-)
-
Thanks so much ladies. I'm overwhelmed at the mo. I didn't let myself accept it until I'd had the scan. Xx
-
Congratulations Jeshiekah what wonderful news you must be over the moon.
Take care of yourself and do keep us updated :foryou:

This is so lovely to read! I didn't like to say before as I didn't want to raise your hopes but a young friend of mine also got pregnant after having chemo and was told that the chances were veru slim but that her age (31) was on her side and she went on to have two children. She was also on HRT.
Taz x :congrats:
-
Great news, congratulations and here's to a bright happy future for your growing family
-
We haven't had a baby on here for a while ......... enjoy being pregnant Jesk!
Now - how is Tracey?
-
Huge congratulations jeshiekah! You must be over the moon!

I have been taking HRT 6 & 1/2 months. The main issue for me was anxiety & PMS . I'm 48 & 49 in may. I went to see my doctor today regarding still trying to conceive.
She advised me to stop the HRT and after 1 TO 2 months have blood tests on fertility. She said to stop will create a real period as apparently while on HRT we don't have them or ovulate. So confused, perhaps stupid. How is it possible women still get pregnant while on HRT also advised to take contraception etc. I've been using ovulation rest strips for nothing! 🙄
I really don't know what to do for the best . My partner and I don't have children sadly. I still desperately wish for us to conceive 🙏🏻 I have stopped the HRT after going through three types to find the right one for me 🙄
I know of two women aged 46 & one of 47 who both got pregnant after fertility tests and medication- so I'm hoping for the best! 😊🤞🏻
-
Probably not. Stop the HRT to allow your body to settle into a routine? Keep a food/symptom/diary .......
-
Thanks the plan 🤞🏻
-
...... rest. Get into the sunshine. Gentle walks. Knitting? ;)

I'm not an expert on this but I don't see that what your doctor says is correct. If it was then women on HRT wouldn't have to keep using contraception until after the age of around 52/53 surely? In all HRT documentation it is clearly stated that contraception must be used as HRT does not work as a contraceptive. http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/ask-the-expert/sexual-health/a11213/unprotected-sex-while-taking-hrt/
Fingers crossed for you Tracy55.

Taz
That's exactly my thoughts!
I think she wants HRT out of my system to then do tests.
And thank you 😊🙏🏻

You're welcome!
