Title: Internal Shaking and Quivering.
Post by: Kathleen on October 09, 2017, 08:30:40 AM
Hello Ladies.

The worst menopause symptom for me is the internal shaking and quivery feeling I get several times a day. It is mentioned in my trusty menopause book and I know other ladies have experienced it ( I've often quoted the MM poster who said it was as if she had swallowed a large mobile phone that is stuck on vibrate).  My question is do any of you ladies know of a way to eradicate it or at least tone it down?  I am very stressed at the moment and anything I could do to calm down would help.

Thanks for reading and take care all.

Hi Kathleen....
My first post on here.....not the worst symptom in my case (hot flushes and sweats - horrible, embarrassing and exhausting!)  but I know exactly how you feel!
I think I single-handedly keep Bachs rescue remedy in business!
I do know it must be caused by hormonal ups and downs but it's a horrible feeling.
Hope you feel better soon and something helps.

This can't go on forever can it?????

Hi Kathleen,

Just wanted to say you are not alone in this strange and bizarre feeling. I have had it now for 3 months after coming off HRT and it was extremely scary at first, sets your mind racing with all sorts of mad thoughts! I have to say I tend to not google my symptoms and come straight to this forum, as I think you can self diagnose yourself with something hideous. I find that moving around helps with my internal shaking, I sometimes just do some gentle stretching or just a walk round the garden. Also drink plenty of water too and practice some breathing exercise's. Acceptance I think is key, if you can get your head around it mentally then I think it helps, as we can magnify things if we then stress over what our bodies are doing to us. I really hope you are feeling better and be assured again you are not alone. Menopause is still such an unknown quantity and not enough is reported on all the other weird symptoms us women can experience - it's not all about hot flushes and middle age spread!!

sending you a big hug..... :)

Hi Kathleen.
Firstly sending you a big hug.
I had this some time ago too, worse on waking initially and took ages to improve. I tracked some of it back to assuming I had low blood sugar....not diabetic but an ex nurse....so I started to have a couple of visits , crackers, or toast before bed....hey presto much less in the morning. I avoided all alcohol, caffeine etc which speed metabolism.....
Now I am fine. I use mindfulness too..... close your eyes think only of what you hear and smell....it chills anyone out.

Hi Kathleen,

Is the shaking all over, just like low blood sugar (as mentioned by Woodlands) or do you feel the shaking comes from you core or even your uterus?

Let me know as I may have a very simple exercise that helps.

Hi Kathleen, I have the same shaking feeling inside and fully understand how you feel. For me I am open with all my friends and work colleagues and tell them when I feel shaky inside,  that way I'm less conscious of anybody looking at me and even make a joke of it.

dont be afraid to ask your GP for help with the symptoms if they make your day difficult to get through. Xx

Hello lladies.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I should've responded sooner but I lost track of this thread and have only just re discovered it.

It helps so much to know that other women understand how I  feel and realise how distressing this sensation is. I've had the jitters, palps and flushy feelings all day today and I am beyond fed up with it!

DeniseC. - I have an appointment to see my GP in ten days so I will definitely mention it then.

Lifeatfifty - I am  intrigued by your comments about an exercise that could help and would love to hear more about it.

Many thanks again ladies and wishing everyone well.

Hi Kathleen I a,so had the mobile phono vibrations that you are speaking about its more common than people realise.I went to see my chiropractor one day and mentioned it and he just gave that blank look so anyway long story short my pelvis was twisted and one leg was noticible longer than the other so after a couple of afpdjustments by him hey presto it was gone, what a relief it was as its so distracting and annoying and your scared about what's going on,that was over two months ago and touch wood no more vibrations so maybe worth trying a few pelvic tilt exercises and stretching from you tube.see if that helps or visit a physio for advice.good luck xx

Hi Kathleen
I had this really badly for sometime about 18 months ago, I was on HRT at the time then came off for a spell, even ended up being referred to a neurologist, as it was quite bizarre. Of course I googled and thought I had everything going! Incidentally the neurologist gave me something to help me sleep which helped and said he had come across is before but couldn't give me an explanation.
It started after I had a really bad 'virus' which was also unexplained that went on for months that led to labyrinthitis, affecting my balance, giving me headaches, fuzzy heads, etc I thought I was going quite mad, with the strangest of symptoms, also put the vibrations down to a trapped nerve in my neck as it felt like I was physically shaking or vibrating inside down through my spine, mostly when I was lying down, and very definitely when I woke suddenly at night.
I thought it was mostly down to stress, as this can be a symptom, also blood sugar, etc etc etc etc, I took some comfort when I found ( after googling) that there are so many people who suffer the same symptoms !
I still occasionally get them, just try to ignore it and not get myself so panicked, as anxiety can make it worse.
You are not alone, so knowing this, I hope it helps, distraction I think is probably the best thing although at 3am in the morning it can be very scary.
I had numerous blood tests, but as the health service only usually offer one test at a time, I got frustrated with thinking I would have to go back for more😩
Good luck and keep us posted and try to chill!

Hello Shardave.

Thank you for your interesting post. Was your shaking sensation with you constantly or did it come and go?  Mine is definitely worse in the morning which isn't helped by the higher cortisol levels that we all experience at that time of day. I also had Labyrinthitis at the beginning of my meno journey and I understand it is quite common.

I'm pleased to see that you are managing your symptoms so well.

Take care.

Hi Kathleen
Mine was worse when I woke, but also quite bad when tired in the evening, when I used to lie back on the sofa I could feel it start😕 It definitely helped with the sleeping tabs, it definitely seems a nerve type symptom, very odd but like I said seems to be suffered by many!

Thank you for your response. When I see my GP I'll mention the possibility of nerve pain and see what he says.

Good Grief! Yet another bizarre symptom which I believe I have also experienced but had not even thought to associate with the menopause. I haven't had this for a while though. It was most strange, I ride a motorbike to work and keep my mobile phone in the left breast pocket of my bike jacket. I would often get to work convinced that someone had tried calling my phone as I would feel a similar vibrating sensation coming from that area. It was only when it then started to happen when I was playing the piano sometimes, that I realised it was something else causing it. As I say, not had this for a while now and hopefully won't have again. I found it quite disconcerting.
Love this forum for being able to find this kind of stuff out.  :)

Hello AstroCat.

All human ( well, menopausal ) life is here lol.

I actually always assumed that this horrible sensation was hormonal as it was mentioned as a symptom in my trusty meno book.  However now I'm beginning to think that there may be another cause so I will investigate that aspect. As you say this forum is a great help to us all!

Take care.

I haven't had the mobile phone in vagina sensation since I last wrote ladies so I'm convinced it was the pelvis being slightly twisted that caused it,hope you find a solution soon xx

I'm another who gets the mobile phone vibration in my pelvic area.

It used to happen just before my period started.  It stopped when I had the mirena coil fitted 2.5 years ago then recently started again, which funnily enough coincides with the constant spotting I've been getting for past 5 weeks.  Am currently waiting for results of womb biopsy which will hopefully explain why I've started bleeding again after such a long gap.

I have it today and I've had it a few times before and I think it's down to a problem with my back which also affects my hip.

Ladies,
I think there are many reason for this including trapped nerves etc.

I'm going to offer one other reason.
We have a major muscle which attaches the upper body to the lower body. Its called the psoas. It doesn't behave like normal muscles and is often referred to as our emotional muscle. So if we are stressed, emotional etc it can react.
It also reacts if something is out in your body ie pelvic alignment or shoulder.

Have a wee read at this https://www.yoganatomy.com/psoas-resources/

One exercise that can help it release and stop pulsing is to lie on your back with your calf muscles on a chair. Make sure your knees are directly above your hips and your feet are inline with your hips and with toes pointing to ceiling. (so basically 90 degree angle between thighs and tummy and 90 degree at back of knees. Lying like this for 10/15 minute every night, for a week, can make a huge difference.
Of course pelvic rotation does require an adjustment by physio or chiropractor.

Hi Kathleen

I suffer from this quivering/shaking inside like you , I am so glad it is not just me and it sounds very strange when I tried to explain this to my partner. Hopefully these symptoms will stop as I have just gone on HRT.

Hello ladies.

Thanks to you all for contributing to this thread.

I realise that hot flushes and night sweats are the most common symptoms of the menopause so it is always a relief to know that the more unusual sensations are 'normal' too!

I still have episodes of internal shaking and I often have nausea as well despite using HRT, albeit a low dose. Infact this has been a regular problem since my periods stopped so it seems to be both long standing and intractable! I guess we all hate the symptoms that hang around the longest.

I will continue my search for a 'cure' and if I find one I'll be sure to let you all know. I think only those who have experienced these awful feelings understand how upsetting they can be.

Take care everyone and sending hugs to you all.

Hello jenjog and welcome to the forum.

Whenever I've tried to describe how I feel by using words such as quivering, jittering and internal shaking etc  I've always felt that they do not do justice to the intensity of the sensation! It's as if the entire inside of my body is vibrating and tense which affects my heart, stomach and bowels and creates a sense of panic. When these sensations stop, which they do on occasion though I've no idea why, I then feel relaxed and 'normal' once again and so much better. It's like coming up for air. These distressing symptoms began when my periods stopped and luckily they are mentioned in my trusty meno book so I was aware that they were hormonal.

Thanks to this fabulous site we can notify each other about the less common menopausal problems and reassure each other that we are not alone which certainly helps.

Wishing you well and keep posting.

Hi, I have just had a load of blood tests because of the pains i have been suffering, fuzzy head, confusion and shakes, all came back as normal, I had a hysterectomy when I was 42 and told then I was nearly through my menopause, which turned out be to be incorrect, I still have my ovaries and apparently I have been perimenopausal, at the time I did get a lot of pains in the bones of my legs and could hardly walk, they went away all of a sudden, then recently ( I am now 53 years old) I started to get a heavy feeling in my keg, strange twitchy sensations and noticeable shakes, the pain in mylegs has been keeping me awake, I have been suffering from increased migraines, shoulder pain and jaw pain, I am not sure if stress has caused me to have all of these symptoms to appear, as i do have a stressful job and have to sleep in, I get around 4 hours max of sleep and can be at work for 24 hours at a time. I am now signed off work and awaiting to have more blood tests this week, I have been scared as my mum had MS. It was so scarey I went back to see a different GP the other day, she recommended this forum, as she believes I have menopausal symptoms. I have always been so active and now ache a lot of the time, my legs and arms have shooting pains, ****ly wierd sensations that come and go, I am tired a lot of the time and can't stop crying. My family rely on my income to pay the majority of the bills and the mortgage. I am scared what is happening to me, as all this started again after I had a virus, developed a water infection , the anti biotics i was put on exacerbated the pains in my legs, I was told to come off them last week. My manager at work keeps saying I look stressed and I am worried aI will lose my job because my shakes are noticeable and my vagueness, blurry vision. I was told to see an optician, my eyesight is fine and no nasties behind my eyes.I was wondering if anybody else has experienced this ? It has helped me to read your messages .. Many Thanks

Yes wendywoo all of the above listen to your gps advice she obviously knows enough when she's referring you here for some clarity on which route to take.
I've been through all the stuff your telling us and I actually lasted it out pretty well considering but I had no quality of life and when I got to the severe va and urogenital stuff enough was enough, don't let it go that far see your lady gp again and agree on a suitable hrt for you,I've been back on hrt (after an absence of a good 5-6 years I think)memory's not so good as you know lol)for around 3 months now it's still early days but the improvements are great for me,small steps till you get a suitable regime but go for it.good luck you'll get there xx

Hi Daisy Dot, Thank you for replying, it has given me hope all will be ok in the end, I was put on HRT patches when I had the hysterectomy, unfortunately I reacted badly and was told I couldn't tolerate HRT, I am hoping to get to see the same doctor next week after my blood test results are back, she was lovely and so understanding. I have always suffered from anxiety but until recently I have rarely had any problems, I go to meetings, have to deal with some really intense situations in my job, it is very people focused. I have read that some people have had to give  up work because the symptoms have become unbearable, I do not want this to happen and cannot afford to stop working, I have read that Yoga and mindfullness meditations are good, I might look into this too. In the past I used to take Menopace, I think I should start to again :)

Thank you, I will do my best, I am not at all hungry at the moment, hardly eating anything, which does not help, I have a lot of food  and allergies and intolerances, this has also been a factor since I started going through the menopause. x

Hello Wendywoo and welcome to the forum.

I am sorry that you are suffering and you have my sympathy.

I find that the low appetite and loss of interest in food goes hand in hand with the internal shaking sensation, or they could both be the result of anxiety.  A friend of mine also experienced food allergies and intolerances with the menopause and she is being referred for testing.

Wishing you well and keep posting.

Was so pleased to find this as the internal vibrating has suddenly started coming on in the middle of the night for me and waking me up. I used to get it, but much milder as I was falling asleep a few years ago but it quickly vanished. I have just become officially post meno so suppose it could be something to do with that as the heart palpitations and skin problems have gone bananas too.
How are you doing now Wendywoo?

Hi I've been off HRT patches since last Thursday. I am post menopause. Feel so rough it's untrue. Internal shaking throughout especially right arm and left face cheek twitches!!  Feel so unwell at times. Is this all due to lack of hormones now?

Hello ladies.

My internal shaking has always been, well internal. It's centred in my stomach and abdomen and it sets off my anxiety. When the horrible feeling stops, which it does at random times I feel normal again. I used to have strong heart palpitations but thankfully they have now reduced to a flutter but lately the strange shaking has moved to my thighs. I briefly wondered if I was developing Parkinsons Disease but I'm over that worry now lol.  These jittery sensations have plagued me through meno and I have spent so much time  trying to cope with them that I don't have the energy to worry about  anything else. Every cloud and all that eh ladies!

Rustymum -  My shaking has always been during the day, a  little in the morning then becoming more intense as the day wears on. I assume tiredness plays a  part and usually by about 8PM it all stops and I feel better.

Angel 1964 - I think lack of oestrogen is responsible for your shaking and twitching so definitely hormonal.

I wish our bodies would just adapt to the new, low oestrogen arrangement and get on with things instead of complaining all the time.

Sorry I can't be of more help ladies but I do sympathise.

Take care everyone and sending hugs.

K.

I get internal shaking.
I've always thought it was my anxiety, I had it a couple of nights ago.
It strikes at any time, sometimes when I'm talking to someone, it's so hard to hide it,
it's almost like im freezing cold and dithering.
I was talking to a very nice man with my OH, at the park with our dogs, not long ago,
and we were having a lovely chat and a laugh, and it hit me, I just started to shake, like I was freezing cold. It's really weird.
Just another meno symptom, No one ever told me about.

Sounds like something similar to what I had too!  It was about 4 years ago and it was always in the night, I'd wake up very hot and I'd feel as if all of the upper half of my body was pulsating and especially centred round my chest/stomach area and I also had bad tinnitis with it that was pulsing  - it was very unnerving.  Once I'd cooled down the pulsing stopped stopped. Hot showers late at night made it worse.  I had sinus issues at the time so it may have been due to this as well.  You're certainly not alone with it. X

Ive found this group today from googling Inner tremors..I guess mine started faintly couple years ago but was literally a day once in so many months.
\its gradually became more often and now pretty much daily and keeping me awake some evenings.
I missed my first period last month but came on early this month.
I been so worried worrying what these tremors are and so relieved to find this forum with so many of you explaining my exact symptons.
Well i hope its that anyway :/

I had this off and on for about 3 months. It really is bizarre and just like having a phone on vibrate. I am sure mine was due to anxiety caused by hormonal /cortisol surges. GP said anxiety. I also take propananol and found it worse when I took it at night and if I had had any alcohol at all; even one glass of wine. Maybe due to BP changes up and down? Certainly is Peri/Meno related.

Yes totally agree, it's got to be related to anxiety. I've been suffering it for years now. Comes on at totally random times, even just talking to family or friends. Don't get it as much as I did, but still do occasionally.

Not sure if this is the same thing but on waking I usually have quite a bad buzzing kind of tremor feeling in the tops of my arms/ shoulders/ in the outer part. Often goes with tinnitus.
I do have hand tremors and tremors right the way down at other times. Neuro for a concussion said probably essential tremor, but I didn't always have it.
It kind of freaks me out at times.

Hi hereandthere

I have this as well.  Its in my shoulders, and down my arms.  I also have tinnitus.  I have had a trapped nerve at the base of my neck in the past year, and wondered if its anything to do with that.  It seemed to get worse after I (foolishly, probably) went to a body pump session

It scares the beejeeesus out of me, what with the palpitations too.

I was thinking of going to an osteopath until I read about that poor chap who died at the hands of one. :-(

I have this - more so when anxious - I used to google and according to it I would have parkinsons or mnd or anything other than hormone or anxiety - Mindfulness breathing and I have beta blockers which primarily work although not all the time if it is bad.

try some of the headspace meditations or as someone said the bachs herbal remedy

good luck

I had the internal vibration a lot a few years ago (I'm 62 now) and saw a GP.  Terrified he was going to say it was something neurological, but he said it's the menopause and anxiety.  I started to calm down and stopped worrying about it and it passed.  I still get it slightly in my left leg at night if I'm worried about something.

Yes I identify with the vibrations things completely.
I am sure mine is hormonal as it comes and goes.
I used to get it when I lay down in bed at night. I can have 3 months when
it goes then a week when it comes back. When I was on propanonol for anxiety
it was actually worse and when I stopped it it improved.

Hello again ladies.

I have always assumed my internal shaking was hormonal in origin. I certainly never experienced anything like it  until I had been without periods for three years. Even then they would suddenly stop at about 9pm every evening after plaguing me throughout the day. My trusty meno book also describes these sensations perfectly along with the emotional symptoms that accompany them. Definitely my worst meno symptom and the most frustrating one. I even Googled 'internal shaking once' and the menopause was the first thing to come up as the suggested cause.

You have my sympathy ladies as they can be truly exhausting and so hard to describe to anyone who hasn't experienced them.

Wishing you all well.

K.

Hello again ladies.

Lola50 -  my internal shaking is still with me unfortunately but it is milder than before and perhaps even milder than when I was on HRT but it's difficult to be certain. The sensations do seem to have changed location though and now seem to be lower down, nearer my clapped out ovaries if that makes sense lol ( I see that you no longer have your ovaries but mine have definitely atrophied according to a scan I had a few years ago). I still have the odd hot flush but they  are milder which is good even though they were never my worst symptom.

Your GPs description of jangling oestrogen receptors is spot on as that is what it feels like. I want to send them a memo saying 'get over it already' but sadly that's not possible!

I will continue to update the forum about coming off HRT and I will certainly get Christmas out of the way before I review it all again. I just hope I feel better then because we will have a houseful of visitors and I don't want to feel crap all the time.

Take care.
