Title: Flu
Post by: Happytobe on September 08, 2017, 07:50:38 PM
Anyone got this flu-like virus at the moment? A week in and not feeling much better. Terrible cough, congestion, still running low grade fever although was a lot higher for a couple of days. Feeling tired, washed out and absolutely no energy to do anything.

Sounds within normal limits!  Poor you, have  :foryou:

Lots of fluids.  Rest.  Paracetamol as necessary.  Maybe ask the Pharmacist local to you which combination works best for this particular 'bug'.  It can take a while to work through the system and then feeling better can take a while too.

Ahhhhhh - Hate flu.  I had the millennium version.

Is it worth paying for the vaccination?

Have had flu vacine last 2 years as I have asthma. All stains not covered though only those circulating that year. So I suppose this is the start of new season or not flu just a flu -like virus.

I am not eligible but my husband is immunocompromised so I think I should go for it.

I just remember being so tired and not able to stay awake, not in a nice way (as I usually enjoy a good sleep  ;) ).  You can see why people die of it  :o

I have to have the flu injection. I'm to have the pneumonia one too. I asked for it after having pneumonia, but the GP looked at the criteria and said I wasn't eligible. Brought it up with the consultant, who was as confused as me. He's let the surgery know I'm to have it.

Trey, how awful. We stayed in Denver last year, as DH attended a conference before touring Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah and of course Colorado. Wonderful time. Sorry to hear about the fires. And the worst atmosphere for asthmatics. No wonder you need oxygen. I hope it all calms down along with your lungs.

Same in England. I'm actually in the USA now as my son and his family live in Maine. Bonding with my 2 year old granddaughter. :)

Sorry to hear you are no better Trey and yes I hope that next week we both see significant improvement.  I think these illness make us feel low too and tearful which doesn't help.

I had the flu a couple of years ago and was so poorly, I couldn't get out of bed for two weeks and took a month to start doing normal things again.n
My appetite went, my body was aching all over (what I imagine it's like when a drug addict comes off drugs ) blocked nose, sore throat like never before, I couldn't even swallow, hot the list goes on.
All I could do is rest and take tablets every four hours although I was having cocodomal two hours later ibuprofen.
I tried to have lots of fluids and had hot water, lemon, honey,  cinnamon and coconut oil. Was comforting, I also had night nurse on a night.
Hope you feel better soon but rest rest rest and look after yourself xxxx

Lots of reports in the press today that it is going to be a really bad flu year. This puts me in a dilemma as I used to pay for the flu jab but after a bad infection, straight after one year, I have been scared to have it since. I worry that it compromise my immune system.

Don't know what to do now.  ???

Best to seek advice from your GP I would say.

I have paid for a flu jab for years.  I used to get it but then they tightened up the criteria.  I found it so helpful that i decided to pay for it until I am 65.  It was a dose of flu that triggered my ME and the vaccine has worked for me ever since  :)

One should only have a vaccination if one is healthy ;-)  ::)

When I had 'flu - twice - I went to bed feeling absolutely fine and woke the next morning in dreadful pain in the joints, very hot/cold - light sensitive, unable to lift my head from the pillow ........... I had never had it previously nor since.  The episodes were about 12 month's apart.  Advised to take pain-relief and drink plenty ......... avoiding Paracetamol as it is a dangerous drug in that it is included in many products in the UK - and can easily be taken over and above the 'safe' dose ..........

so which painkiller should one take if not paracetamol  ( which I use)? I keep to the recommended limits and know to check contents for other products.

It's OK if you are well enough to check each product.  But when one has 'flu one often runs a temperature which can muddle thinking processes.  This happened to a 19 year old girl in our village in the 1990s - she was ill, lived alone, took too many products with paracetamol in, which killed her  :'(.

I always use Nurofen with success.  Mum swore by Anadin for everything  ::)

I limit Nurofen to a minimum because it can irritate the stomach and affects kidneys. Even when ill I make sure that I don't exceed the limit.

That's interesting as I've always been told to stay clear . I'm too scared to get it just incase makes me worse! I feel bad enough xxx

'flu is like many illnesses/conditions, 'natural'  ::) but for people who are already compromised, it can be fatal.  But I would resist the jab because the body needs to build up a resistance.  M in L only had 'flu when she was given the jab for which GPs were being paid a tenner a shot.  She had it for 3 years and was very ill each time.  When she didn't have the jab, she was fine.  In all her 88 years she had 'flu symptoms after those injections.

If you have an underlying health condition eg asthma or heart disease you are advised by GP (UK) to have a flu vaccination. Flu can be nasty for anyone but as you say CLKD for anyone who is already compromised it can be really nasty and even fatal. After a bout of flu you have an immunity to that particular strain but no other strain. So you cannot build up total immunity to flu as each year different flu viruses circulate. A flu virus can mutate many times also meaning no immunity even if you have had that strain before. Every year jab is altered to immunise against the particular strains that are thought to be going around. I know there are fears concerning flu jabs but I always have one due to asthma and so does my daughter for the same reason. It's weighing up the risks and I feel in this case it's better not to risk flu with asthma ..or any other condition.

As much as we hate 'flu and fleas, ain't they marvellous in the way that they both reproduce and cling to life  ::)

Well, I have a 'pet' cricket right now  ;)

How do you feel this morning, re the 'flu?  I remember the intense aching of various joints at various times of the day, the inability to lift head from pillow, the sweats and shivers ......... fortunately both attacks lasted no longer than 3 days but I was very weak after.  My dog backed into our deep pond the first morning I was out of bed and I don't know to this day how I hauled her out  :-\

I started this thread on 8th Sept when I had been ill for about a week. Finally I am beginning to feel more like myself. It takes a while to recover from flu and also leaves you feeling emotionally low too.
Look after yourselves this Winter ...have a flu jab if you need to, build up your immunity system with good healthy food, take exercise if you can and also enough rest. Here's to a healthy Winter season.

I can recommend Echinacea ( the herbal drops from Dr Vogel are the best). At the first sign of a cold, I up my Vit C and take the drops twice a day and it has necer let me down, it seems to either stop it or lessens the symtoms/ length of time. I get the flu jab every year free as I am asthmatic and have never had any reaction ti it apart from a bit of a sore arm after.hope you feel better soon x

Maybe put it off until you feel well.  Don't over-load your immune system?

I've got errands tomorrow in that area where gp is.  I'm starting full time hours next week so won't get another chance
