Title: Horrible cold/throat bug doing the rounds
Post by: countrybumpkin on November 14, 2016, 09:09:35 PM
My husband started it 10 days ago with streaming cold/flu symptoms and hacking cough. I haven't had a bug of any kind for over 3 years so just knew ............
I started with the  " I am going to get a streaming cold feeling in nose" last friday then it all cleared up and I thought great then yesterday the razor blades landed in my throat/voice box. So just one word from me and I am choking and my nose and eyes streaming arggghhhh I hate coughs and i hate having to keep quiet ;D ;D

Hello countrybumpkin.

Sorry you are suffering ( in silence lol ).

You may have had a lucky escape as my son seems to have caught a tummy bug from one of his flatmates. He lives and works in London and had to get a taxi home as he felt so ill. He is 24 and like all men is not great with illness.

Hope you feel better soon.

K.

I have been reading about the tummy bug with friends kids on facebook. Now that would be all I would need  :o :o :o  on top of this one.

What does the tummy bug entail? Sickness and diarrhoea? It's just my husband has had bad stomach pain since Saturday but no sickness or diarrhoea, just pain and a lot of burping. He thinks it was something he ate but other family members ate the same thing and are OK.

I'm trying to hit start of cold on the head. Streaming nose & eyes. Normally would let it run its course, but son's wedding in 11 days time. Perfect timing! Hubby had this a month ago & I didn't catch it then, typical!

As for tummy bug, well I thought it was food poisoning I had back in August. Came on very quickly after a take away, within 6 hours. But was told it was more likely to be norovirus. Still not convinced it was mind you.

Yes my husband had eaten out and the pain came on around 5 hours later. I sometimes have problems after eating out. I think it's because restaurants use a lot of salt that I never use and the oils they use can have an effect.

I have a colleague at work off today (text said she's been up ill half the night - no expansion of definition of 'ill', but she had a cold only last week, so my guess is she's got a stomach bug).  Now, I know what this lady is like, and if she can drag herself out of bed she'll come to work .... my anxiety levels are rising as she sits next to me, and if she comes to work tomorrow I'll be in full panic-mode for the next fortnight  :'(  I'm emetophobic, and I simply can't understand why people won't take the advice of the medical profession and stay quarantined for 48 hours post-symptoms!!  If she's back at work before next Monday, I'll be bathing in hand sanitiser, and not eating at work  >:(

I had a cough Germ in May and was afflicted day and night for 3 weeks: when I did begin to recover it was really quick in that I regained strength each day  ……. a similar bug hit me 5 weeks ago and I'm still throat clearing during the day

I have a very sexy voice today ;D ;D but the cough is gathering strength especially if I speak and as I am a complete chatterbox its hard to stay silent.  The coughing makes my nose drip as well ::)

So far so good with my cold & flu capsules, in so much as my nose & eyes have stopped streaming like a burn! My throats a bit nippy though, so suspect it'll be cough mixture next! FAB!  ::)

I have it too.  :(
Started with a cough and scratchy throat, the next day aching and hot & cold spells. Day 3 - sneezing & runny nose thrown into the mix.
Not much appetite, a few 'toilet visits'.  Sweated buckets last night.

The throat cough seems to follow same pattern in everybody >:(
I was awake alot on the night with the cough and totally bunged up nose so had to breathe through mouth which made me cough ::)
What I want to know is when I woke up this morning I could sort of breathe through my nose so just where has all that stuff gone - actually I know its sitting just below my voice box on top of windpipe!!!
My lovely husband is making frog noises at me because of my croaky voice ;D
I also have what I call pumpkin head which is a feeling as if you face and head are going to explode.
I am going shopping with friends this afternoon so will have to keep quiet, not really feeling well enough but having spent over a week indoors because of husband having it first I am getting cabin fever and want to go out.  Think a relapse will be in order by tonight :o :o

Good description countrybumpkin, "pumpkin head."  ;D I said to hubby it's "All in my head!" Of course he misunderstood my meaning!  ;D
Title: Re: Horrible cold/throat bug doing the rounds

Most the bunged up feeling is actually due to the lining of the nasal passages being inflamed, not a build up of mucus.  So the 'stuff' doesn't have to go anywhere to lose the bunged up feeling - the inflammation has to go down (the Sudofed adverts with the little knitted guy, narrated by Noddy Holder, explain it really well!!).
Title: Re: Horrible cold/throat bug doing the rounds
Post by: countrybumpkin on November 16, 2016, 10:32:15 PM
;D ;D I have never seen the sudofed adverts but am imagining noddy holder up my sinuses :o

I managed christmas shopping.  I have not alot of voice now and a very sore throat and a wonderful barking cough but hopefully nothing worse will happen. Nose less drippy today as well.

I am drowning in hot tea as that is all I want for the poor old throat.

When my hubby had it, he thrived on "I'm not well!" He wasn't dying, just had a cold. Now a month later, he's still harping on about it saying, " I was really ill!" Me unsympathetic?  ;D

Not a happy bunny today >:(   The cough is worsening and I am at that stage where I don't know if its going to turn into a secondary infection or if it is still viral and will clear eventually.  Its so painful in throat/top of chest to cough.

My poor husband who started with this 13 days ago is still coughing and blowing his nose although he feels much better in himself.   Evening/nights and first few hours in morning are the worst.  I was swigging cough medicine at 3am ::)

I am coughing that much that my ribs hurt.

The joys of not knowing if you need to hold your ribs or the top of your head when you cough >:(  and not having enough hands to do both!

My voice is a mixture of squeeky and croaky and talking makes me cough and choke as does looking up or bending head down, but then again everything is making me cough.  I am really dreading going to bed. My bunged up left sinuses are throbbing s well, joy of joys.

Littleminnie, does your throat really hurt when you cough, its like a razor blade with me.

My husband has still got a wonky thermostat and he is 2 weeks on with this virus. His cough etc is better than mine but he is still not well.
I saw the GP today because I have got mild earache as well as throbbing sinusesm no voice and the cough ::) and wanted to make sure I didn't have either chest or ear infection for the weekend!  Dr was standing in for one of the partners who is off sick with same virus and the waiting room was full of people coughing!
He said its a very nasty virus and takes weeks to get over ( cheerful soul). My lungs are fine but ear and throat red but he thinks its all viral so no need for antibiotics at present.  HE said my voicebox would be red raw as well hence the sqeeky bit of voice I have.
He was interesting as he said whenever we get big changes in weather temp like we have been having past weeks then a really nasty virus appears without fail and he said its throughout the whole country.

I had vicious acid reflux so taking medication was almost impossible  :-\ ………. I coughed myself inside out in May/June  :(.  That muscle below the ribs probably has a long name and can be soooo painful when stretched.
Title: Re: Horrible cold/throat bug doing the rounds

I am going back to Dr tomorrow. I have got alot worse over weekend. Slight temp and coughing up green stuff  :P plus bad sinus pain same side as earache and again the lovely green stuff. I also feel tight chested.
My husband who seemed to be recovering had got worse as well, he is now over 2 weeks since it started. He won't go to Dr until he is really bad but even he is contemplating it later this week if no improvement.
I dread going to bed because as soon as I lay down I am coughing so much I am almost sick and this is happening all night long. Sitting up does not help. I feel very spaced out no doubt due to the blocked sinuses.
I still have the croaky weird voice ;D

Green is a sign of infection which is being moved by natural expulsion, i.e. a hacking cough  >:(.

I have a sore chest, in the area above both breasts - probably due either to coughing hard this week or lifting something heavy but can't remember that I have ……. touching the skin brings on sharp pain and I had difficulty sitting up in the bath once I'd decided to have a wash.  No internal pain.  No pain in the back …….

I have found muscles I didn't know I had with this coughing!  My cough improves if I don't utter a word but its hard not to talk. I am not as bad this evening but have had a quiet day with little talking, temp back to normal for now.  I am really looking forward to going to bed tonight >:(

I have done very well to go over 3 years without a cold or cough but this one is making up for it ::)

This is my first day without paracetamol. Hot/cold spells gone, aching & headache gone. Still coughing, but not as bad. Went to supermarket yesterday with OH, had a coughing fit & almost through up so came back.  :(
Appetite still not back.

How long since you first started with this?
I had the first symptoms of " I am getting a cold" 10 days ago but the bad throat started 4 days later and the cough then.

Mine started on Sat 12th.   It started with a cough and scratchy throat. (Not sore though).

Post by: countrybumpkin on November 21, 2016, 11:44:14 AM
Littleminnie, snap my first I think I am getting a cold started on 12th but the throat didn't start till 14th.

My weekend slight temp has gone back to normal and only green is from one side of my nose. My cough is spectacular though, if I start coughing its like having whooping cough without the whoop, quite scary as its hard to get a breath in. Sadly I am very prone to this type of cough just haven't had one for 4 years so its a nasty surprise.
I know others are saying the cough is bad enough to make you sick.  I still have mild ear ache.

I was going to go back to Dr today but their phone system was out of action this morning and when it was working again it has been constantly engaged so no chance of seeing anyone today. I have managed to get an app via computer access for tomorrow afternoon though.

So lets hope lungs are clear and ear is not an infection because otherwise it will be the antibiotics and then the thrush treatment ::) ::)

Hi Charlotte, I too was thinking at day 5, well I will start to turn a corner in a day or so and my husband who had started with it a week before me just laughed at me ::)

For me today the cough is the worst although I am now finally coughing up loads of gunk thats not nasty coloured and I have mild earache as I have had from the start. The sinus pain has finally eased as has the contacnt low grade headache but I feel really waffy headed if I stand up and move around too much.

My husband is a reall workaholic always on the go and he is doing as little as possible 17 days after he first started with this!

This cough is across the UK and hanging on a bit.  We both still have an irritating 'clearing of throat' long after the virus has flown on.  If you don't feel 'ill' as such, accept?  :-\ ?  It will run it's course.  I knew I didn't have a chest infection because I wasn't wheezy ……. use Vic Vapour Rub or similar or sit over a bowl of hot water and vinegar or a medication: ask the local Pharmacist.
Title: Re: Horrible cold/throat bug doing the rounds
Post by: countrybumpkin on November 21, 2016, 04:49:13 PM
At moment we both still feel a bit ill and to be honest I do not want to out in public if I have one of my coughing fits, very like a whooping cough attack without the whoop ::) and would be so embarrasing so will stay hiding until it improves a bit.

The vicks vapour was too strong and made me cough myself silly with the fumes, I am doing lots of head over steam though.

IT does seem to be nationwide though and taking a long time to get the cough to improve.

Well went back to Dr today and nope I do not need antibiotics. My lungs are still clear with no wheeze or crackling and she gave me a very good listen.  She said the viral inflammation of your airways takes 4 weeks to settle down and the killer cough should improve at 3-4 weeks :(

My ear is now fine.  My brown bloody one sided nose stuff she said I have a big sore in my nose so I have been given antibiotic cream for that and told not to blow it which is difficult as at every coughing fit my nose streams!

She said don't waste your money on cough medicines as none of them will help. Try and avoid temp changes and cold food /drink and try as much as possible not to give in to the maddening irritation in the throat and cough. Most of the time thats impossible as its the only way to breathe!

She said she wished she had a magic potion for this very nasty virus but unless they can hear a chest infection antibiotics would just be a waste and not speed up recovery.

So as now 2 different Drs have said my lungs are fine I just have to believe them at 2am when I am coughing my lungs up ???

This is by far the worst cold/virus I have had for a very long time.

Snap!  I have had bad coughs before, very similar but the worst of the cough is usually over within a week and I am completely better by end of 2/3 weeks but this one just goes on and on and on.

How is your voice now?   Mine disappears if I try and talk so by evening its very very croaky whereas morning its odd but nearer to normal.

I coughed 24/7 for the 1st 2 weeks, then less and less - that was in May.  More recently it was similar symptoms that didn't last as long.  Left me with an irritating clearing of throat in the day time, better laying down  ::)

It will take it's course.  As long as there isn't infection you will soon feel better.

I have hiatus hernia and take ranitidine and have done for 25 years.  As long as I eat very strictly I don't get any heartburn.  The cough medicine and slight change in diet last few days because I stopped eating the ice cream I normally have as a dessert did give me slight heartburn.

What I am finding is that your windpipe is full of gunk, I can feel it and want to cough it up :o and this makes me feel sickly as well?
Title: Re: Horrible cold/throat bug doing the rounds

The gunk will make you feel sick. I suffer with catarrh and get the same sick feeling as the mucus runs down the back of my throat. Do you have a humidifier? I have one that you can add drops of oil to so I use that by the bed and use eucalyptus or olbas oil.
