Title: Pokemon Go
Post by: Scampi on July 28, 2016, 02:59:16 PM
Is anyone playing?

I'm having great fun with friends at work (and my daughter and her boyfriend) - all getting excited about 'catching' cartoon pigeons on the way to/from work/Uni/just out for a walk!  It's highly entertaining walking round, knowing that most other people with their phones in their hands are doing the same thing as you - and you don't have to hold your phone up like a fool all the time!  It vibrates if there's a Pokémon close by, so you can just hold your phone by your side.

I love that it's getting so many people out of the house and active.  And I don't buy into the 'dangerous' rubbish - blaming a game if you do something stupid/dangerous is like blaming the sat-nav if you drive into the canal!  Use a bit of common sense and it's just harmless fun  :D

Parks and town centres have the rarer ones apparently.

We have a Poke stop just by our church. I'm not playing it but all of my sons are.  The local pub has got one in their garden much to the landlords delight!

It makes no sense to me at all  ??? ??? ???

I blame it all on aliens playing with our minds & trying to take over the world  ;D ;D

Babyjane - Pokémon are little animated 'monsters' that first appeared in the 1990s (I think!) in TV programmes, computer games and merchandise - I think they are a Japanese creation.

Pokémon Go is a mobile phone game - it uses GPS to know where you are, and as you walk in the real world, an animated character (your avatar) walks round in the game world on your phone.  You walk round to find Pokémon, spots called 'Pokestops' where you can collect items to allow you to continue the game, and places called 'Gyms' where you can 'battle' other Pokémon (in the game, obviously!).  I don't understand the battling, so I don't do it.  For me and my friends, the fun is catching the Pokémon and hatching them from eggs (which you do by walking certain distances).  There's a certain amount of competition in who has caught the best one - and for those of us who remember Pokémon from the TV programme, we have our favourites that we are really pleased to catch (I would LOVE to catch a Pikachu!).

Cazikins - you're right, it makes absolutely no sense at all!  But it's fun, and it's outdoors, and with a bit of common sense there's no harm in it.   :D

I signed up as soon as it came out but have only found a couple!  I just haven't had time to do more. There's a Poke stop just down our lane and my son said "don't mention it on Facebook or we'll have crowds of people staring in our windows!"  ;D

so when you get to the location you see this thing on your phone via the gps on your phone, it isn't really physically in the location?

I don't have an iphone or smartphone anyway so I am not going to be doing it, I just don't like reading about things I don't understand  ::)

Pokémon only exist in the app, not for real - when you find a one, the app uses your phone's camera and shows the creature in the real world on your phone screen.  You can capture and save images if you want to (I've seen pictures of Pokémon in strange places - for instance, one that looks like a goldfish on a fish counter in Asda!).  I'm sure you wouldn't have to search very far to find a relative or friend who could show you how it works!!
