Title: Heartburn
Post by: Dyan on August 18, 2015, 03:25:53 PM
I have been suffering from heartburn on and off for so while now but just lately it has become more frequent.
Today I've had enough, despite taking gaviscon and some over the counter tablet( which would normally shift it) it has not gone away.
I phoned the doctors and have an appointment tomorrow morning.
I'm beginning to worry about it :-\
It is happening a lot and lasting about 2-3 days.

Is it Gaviscon Advance Dyan....the other stuff doesn't work for me at all.

Digestive issues are another lovely part of meno for some.

Right pain in the.... ::)

Hope you get something that helps from your doctor.

No, it's not gaviscon advanced just the normal one but they haven't shifted it at all over the past week so I've  been taking an indigestion tablet that the pharmacist recommended.
I took one this morning, when I felt it coming on after breakfast, and it still wasn't gone by lunchtime,so I took another one and it's still here :(
Only allowed to take 2 tabs in 24 hrs.
I was surprised to get an appointment, but the receptionist asked what it was about and at first didn't have any appointments but went off and came back and said she had one for 8.10am tomorrow.
I just need some relief. It's horrible. I feel like there is something stuck in my chest.

Gaviscon never works for me, I have ranatadine (sp?) from the GP

I said that about Gaviscon too until Sparkle pointed me towards it. You can't buy it off the shelf it's behind the pharmacist counter and is not cheap but boy does it work. It's horrible to take because it's so thick.

I take Lansoprazole in the morning and two teaspoonfuls of Gaviscon at night before bed and the heartburn is well controlled.

Saw the nurse today and she thinks I might have a gastric inflammation.
She has give me a months supply of lansoprazole 30mg,one in the morning.
I'm to go back if symptoms get worse or,after taking the course of tablets, the heartburn comes back.

Before or after food?  DH used this to good effect  ;)
Title: Re: Heartburn
Post by: Dyan on August 19, 2015, 02:35:19 PM
30-60mins before.

DH was on it 4 years ago but it did nothing. A few weeks later he was diagnosed with pancreatitis and was in hospital for 2 weeks and then gall bladder removed after 4 wks.
Must say, after taking the one lansoprazole this morning,I'm feeling more comfortable.
The nurse did say that it should also help with my bowels, as I mentioned I get very windy :o ;D

Let's hope the improvement continues.  Often the gut becomes used to what is put through it and needs another preparation in order to ease symptoms?

That's what I take Dyan and have found them very helpful. I also take the Gaviscon at night before bed.

Hope they work for you....the only thing is having to waken up earlier in the morning to take one  ::)

Hi
I have been taking lanprozole in a morning for about 3 months now due to really uncomfortable indegestion, after taking it for a few days felt loads better, have recently been the doctors to see how safe it is to keep taking and on repeat prescription for 12 months.

Was horrible before felt very uncomfortable with it and got all anxious that it was something worse, which in turn made it worse, never really suffered before until hitting this certain age and stage of life!!

Post by: Dyan on August 27, 2015, 02:11:06 PM
Was going ok with the lansoprazole but boy! the heartburn is back today with a vengeance.
Had it since after breakfast and much worse.
Phoned Drs and they have got me in this afternoon.

Like you Angel45,I keep thinking it's something else, which doesn't help the situation.
I don't really want to eat and drink because it hurts but I'm hungry so have had lunch but it's no better :-\

You heard it more in my voice than a cough, which did take a few weeks to go, I find now that u avoid certain foods and the healthier I eat the better it is. The doctor did also help to put my mind at rest as I felt really worried about it, hope your visit to the doc helps

GP update:
He is sending me to have a camera( can't remember the name) :-\ put down :-\ and mentioned another test that will take  2 weeks to come through. He couldn't say how long for the camera though.
He said to carry on with the lansoprazole and to take gaviscon inbetween when needed.
Because of the symptoms I have he said he wasn't worried, but because I've had this for more than 5 weeks on & off it is time to have a camera down.

My DH has had this camera put down twice. The first time without sedation but the second time he was sedated and he knew nothing about it.
I think that's the option I'll go for.
Title: Re: Heartburn
Post by: honeybun on August 27, 2015, 04:57:10 PM
It's an endoscope Dyan. I've had it done with sedation and didn't remember a thing about it. Cup of tea and some toast and home.
I was diagnosed with nervous dyspepsia. That was years ago. I was also tested for H Pylori infection which they can treat with ABs. I was clear for that.

I would suggest Gaviscon Advance, it's much better than the regular stuff. Don't take it with a couple of hours of your Lansoprazole.
What strength are you taking of that. I'm on 15mg but if I'm having a bad day I double up.

Your test can also pick up a hiatus hernia.

That's it HB! H pylori infection!  :thankyou:
Couldn't quite understand the GPS accent :-*
Just bought the normal gaviscon but liquid this time. I usually have the tablets but not keen on them.
Took 2 spoonfuls when I got home and the heartburn is better. Still there, but better than it has been all day.

Sparkle- :thankyou:

Title: Re: Heartburn
Post by: Unhinged on August 27, 2015, 06:44:22 PM
Hi Dyan,

I'm another hernia/GERD 'ster! Mine came on at around the same time as meno; reflux, gastritis, awful burning pains in stomach. 3 gastroscopies/endoscopies, H-Pylori tests, a 24hr PH test at Barts - that's where they feed a tube down to your stomach which tests the level of reflux over 24 hrs, downside is I had to travel there and back on the train with the tube taped to my face, I got some looks I can tell you! So the diagnosis is definitely GERD/GORD and I'm eligible for the operation. Tried all the over the counter meds, all far too weak, Lansaprazole didn't work on me, only thing that did was Omeprazole (the other PPI), but the side effects were grim - anxiety, blurred vision, generally feeling unwell.

The only relief is if I have a liquid only diet for a couple of weeks (no not beer & wine unfortunately, but vitamin shakes like Cambridge diet for example). If you've got any to spare, losing just a few pounds can make a difference.

So now I'm waiting for hernia repair and anti-reflux surgery (Nissen fundoplication), where they loop the stomach back on itself and stitch it to prevent any reflux coming up. BUT, since I have taken HRT my reflux has decreased a bit! I thought it would be the opposite but no. So, I am thinking of postponing the op.

It has taken me since October 2012 to get this far on the NHS so don't be frightened to really push for what you want - I've found you have to! Good luck and I do hope you get some relief soon.

You have to get the Gaviscon Advance from the pharmacist. It works so much better than the other stuff.

It's like swallowing a gold fish but taken at bed time it really helps. Sparkle recommended it and it's great. Try propping yourself up overnight. That can really help too.

I find that not eating nor taking medication within an hour of going to bed helps avoid heartburn at night time.  Some times it can feel background heartburn in the afternoon so try to walk a bit - sitting around doesn't help my gut  ::)
Title: Re: Heartburn

I'm not sure how to lie at the moment. I still have a sore back but my heartburn is troublesome....is something going on here, so many of us have it.
The only way I can get comfortable enough to sleep is to stick a pillow between my knees, along with another pillow to prop me up I may as well sit in a chair all night.
I wakened up in the night and my knee pillow had gone missing. Hubby had it on his head  ;D ;D

It's not the first time things have gone missing in bed recently. I took a hot water bottle with me a few weeks ago. I wakened up feeling so hot and unwell with sweat running down my face. Far more than a hot flush. The blooming hot water bottle was on my head.......how ? why ?  ::)

I'm looking forward to bed and my medicine before I go....god I know how to live.  ::)

Well now you mention it  ;D

What I would give for a normal stomach. Why did I not appreciate it when I was young. The amount I could stuff down my throat with no trouble. Now I even look at an apple with suspicion.

No fun this is it.

Well ladies tomorrow can only get better. I'm going to start my day with porridge. It often helps.

Drown, crown....I got your drift  ;D

Oh me too...I try to forget the stomach issues but the most frustrating thing for me is about eight years ago after such a long while suffering I managed to get off all my meds and get back to almost normal. I could even have a curry.
Now I'm back to bloody square one again and I can't figure out why.

I might just try what I did before and see what happens...it can't get much worse than it is now.

Dyan, that's exactly it, the pain in the stomach is an acid 'flare' that I get - just a few seconds at it's worst, and is always followed by leakage of acid into my oesophagus.

Sparkle, yes have tried Gaviscon Advance, and I agree, it's the best of the bunch - the trouble I have is it's consistency, it actually makes me gag and feels like I'm choking/drowning. Feels like I'm swallowing - oh eek - no won't say, some of you might be having supper! x

I have the mirena Sparkle so no periods.
I've had 2 mirena's in 7 years so I don't really know what would happen if I had it removed :-\
I'm due to have it renewed next August.
We have nobody at our surgery now who actually deals with menopause & HRT.
The main nurse left, the GP she handed it down to left, and the other GP,who took over, has gone too :-\

I use estrogen gel and I have the mirena for the progesterone part and to protect my womb as I still have my ovaries.
I'm 54 and last year I had an internal scan for a problem I had and the consultant told me I was post menopause.
I haven't a clue, because once the mirena comes out will my periods come back? :-\
The mirena stops the bleeding, after it has been inserted a few months so it's been about 7 years without a bleed.
Very confusing this meno lark :-\

Oh heck no. They are prescription only and the GPs are not that keen. I have a few for emergencies when my digestive system just seems to go slow. It sends things through quicker. If things are no better for you at the beginning of the week then go and ask for one of them.

If my tummy stops gurgling then I know I'm in for trouble. When things are moving along it gurgles away.

Can't even think of what to suggest.

You can get other anti nausea pills. My daughter was prescribed them a while ago. They are sold for travel sickness but work well for general queasiness. Now I know you can buy them.....excuse the spelling but they are called Stugereon I think. Any pharmacy has them.

They are great sparkle. They get rid of nausea and speed up the digestive process and also get rid of excess acid.
Metochlopramide is the anti nausea injection or pill they give you before a general anaesthetic.

Trouble is over use has been linked to heart problems, that's why you can't buy the equivalent over the counter any more.

Stugeron works well for me.
I had mirena and my periods went from very heavy to normal but then got even heavier, I had it taken out and they went really light, that was about 2 or 3 years ago. Now they have changed again from one day of flooding to one normal day to four days of normal. I've missed two periods this year so I expected that they'd be heavy when it turned up after eight weeks but it was normal.

Milk is hard to digest Dyan which maybe would not have helped things.
Good that you are getting an earlier appointement if just for the reassurance. Normally nothing is picked up. After suffering for years I had the endoscope and a barium swallow and was told reflux and dyspepsia. The treatement was pills and change of diet.
I still struggle.
When I'm really bad I go on a white diet. Rice, pasta, chicken fish and potatoes. It does help calm things down for me.

Let us know how you get on, you have my sympathy it's a bloody miserable thing.

Liver issues can cause nausea. A good liver supplement is milk thistle although you would need to make sure it's suitable for you.
There is only one type that's recommended and that's a make called Jarrows. It's not cheap but really helps.
My hubby has had liver problems, that's how I'm aware of the supplement. It was recommended by a consultant.

Hubby didn't suffer from that. If you google milk thistle it will give you the details of what it's good for. I do know my sis also used it for gall bladder issues

You would have to check though. It's always a good idea to make sure it's suitable before you buy it.

It's normally talked about around the festive season as it's very good for hangovers .....not that's what you have .....oh heck digging a hole but you know what I mean.

It's for good liver health.
One of our former members ..,Trey.....was a great believer in it and it was from her that I learned of how helpful this supplement can be.

When the nurse prescribed Lansoprazole 2 wks ago she said that it could interfere with my other meds, AD's & sandrena.
I've noticed that my mental state is not good at the moment.
This has been a slow transition but I'm wondering if the lansoprazole is to blame.
I feel kinda weird, sort of out of it and edgy.

On the heartburn front and getting an appointment.
My GP rang this morning( waited in all day yesterday but hey ho)
He is referring me privately and I'm now waiting on a call from the consultant as to what time he will see me Friday 11th Sept.
I've had no heartburn today but like I said I don't feel well mentally.
I told the GP on the phone that I was stopping the lansoprazole because I was worried it was affecting my antidepressants so he made a note on my records.
I know heartburn is awful but I would rather have that than go down with an episode of OCD, anxiety & depression.

Anyone else had experience of this at all?

I'm wondering if this is my depression seeping through because of taking the lansoprazole but I've been off it now,3rd day,so I should be feeling better each day.
I just needed to get this off my chest  as I feel so panicky.

I remember being like this when I had symptoms down below and almost convinced myself I had cervical cancer.
The scan showed nothing and I was so relieved.

I keep thinking that I've started something because, and I've never told anyone before, but I binge eat at least once a week in secret.
When I say binge eat I go crazy and stuff myself to the point that my stomach is soooooo full and uncomfortable.
I actually buy chocolate, cakes etc and hide them to have a binge. Afterwards I feel so guilty and hate myself.
This isn't something new. I did this when I lived with my mother and I think it might be a comfort thing in times of stress.
I'm worried, because of my binging I've done something to my stomach.

Oh heck! I'm in such a state :-*

Any reassurance would be gratefully accepted.

Thank you ladies :)

Thanks sparkle.
My DD just phoned to say that her boss has asked her to work longer than 1pm and she had no lunch with her, so I've got to just pop out and give her a pack up.
When I get back I'll take a look.
 :thankyou:
Means a lot :)

Oh you are not alone.

I still have indigestion, and have had it off and on for days now. Was out this morning with hubby and on a 30 minute car journey I went from feeling ok to I must have something seriously wrong such as cancer. Totally daft.....but not in my mind.
I do have a bad tummy but I've had bloods done recently and all was fine, I'm not loosing weight and apart from that I feel well enough.

The moment I start to stress it all gets a lot worse.

I'm not going to tell you to stop stressing because I know it's almost impossible but you are getting your tests done soon so that should put your mind at rest.

Prajna- I've been on fluoxetine for 11 years but interesting none the less.
I'll have to check if that's one of the side effects.

Just got home from my appointment at hospital with a consultant gastrologist.
Firstly he told me that lansoprazole does not interfere with ADs and even showed me the report in the book as he could see I was worried.
So the question is,why did I not feel right mentally.
I told him perhaps it was me getting worked up about my stomach and worrying about what it could be.
He said that he is not concerned, going on my symptoms, that it's anything to worry about and, after examining me he has put me on a course of omeprazole and I'm to have a camera down on October 1st.
He was lovely and reassured me, as I think he could see that I wasn't feeling right mentally.
If I have a problem with the omeprazole,at all,I am to ring him and he will talk to me.

He said that they use 2 drugs for stomach problems, lansoprazole & Omeprazole and neither of them can upset ADs.
He said to me, and he looked me straight in the eye," I wouldn't lie to you "
I told him I believed him and felt reassured and comfortable with him.

Talking to DH afterwards, he said that the mind is a funny thing and I for one should know that ::)
I know he's right. I already feel like a weight has been lifted :)

So Dyan he's obviously discussed this possible interruption in ADs with other patients.  So he is aware of our worries.  He deserves  :medal:

Hopefully the new regime will ease symptoms.  I find not taking meds before bed helps ease heartburn possibilities, as if I lay down too soon it starts ……

Certainly the mind is a 'funny' thing  >:( - I have rarely been able to over-ride panic attacks by reminding myself that 'nothing bad has happened' and 'this too will pass'  :'(

Maybe your background worry was enough to upset your mental feelings …….. I can soon get to a dark place when panic takes over.

I hope so.  Even when asleep my anxiety grinds on - if I'm not aware of dreaming about problems I am sure that my brain is still working over-time leaving me extra tense the next day .

Feet up, wine to hand?  ;)

Update: had gastroscopy last night. Went very well, although I was very nervous up til I'd had the sedation. All I remember is the camera coming out, but as I was so relaxed I didn't  panic, and hearing the nurse say,"it's all done" :)
According to DH I was gone for 45 minutes but it only seemed like 2.
The result is that  I have a slow digestive tract. Despite having to fast for 7 hours, my stomach was still full :-\
There were no signs of Barrett's disease( pre- cancer), ulcers or burns in my stomach but I'm still to take omeprazole daily as this helps with the heartburn.
I am so relieved.
I left hospital around 9pm after tucking into a sandwich washed down with a nice cup of tea ;)
Feeling fine this morning but can't drive for 24 hours so won't be going anywhere.I'll just take it easy in front of the telly and DD can bring me a cuppa or two, oooooo! and maybe a chocolate biccie.......or two  ;) ;D

Oh I did enjoy that cuppa ;D

I can go days without going and then go 2 /3 days in a row ::)

I have been thinking about you a lot.  You survived  :medal:

My GP gave me Motillium (I think) that supposedly shoves food from the stomach into the digestive tract faster.  It might be worth while having a chat about what to take to encourage the gut to work properly, for me it had stopped almost completely. I felt SO ill I was suicidal  :'(.  He gave me Colpermin and the above ……. Colpermin to get rid of any upper gut wind.  I had to swallow both within an hour of my main meals.

Due to anorexic-type Life style i.e. I didn't eat much for years, my gut spasm had simply stopped pushing …….

I've not eaten much today although I have eaten 'well' I can feel background heartburn  :-\

I did find that if DH rubbed from my belly button downwards it would shift things.  We could see the wind moving  ::) …….  :o.  It didn't matter when I ate though; little and often or hardly at all.

 :thankyou: PN & Littleminnie.
I was very nervous leading up to it but tried to calm myself with breathing.
Once I'd had the sedative I didn't know anything until they were taking the camera out and I was too chilled to panic.

Prajna- the only thing the consultant told me was to avoid too much fatty food which I do anyway.
I tend to eat little & often throughout the day and have a meal in the evening which I have now cut down as I was finding my portions creeping up ::)

I read that wheat bran should be avoided if you have a slow digestive tract as this bulks your stomach so that the other food cannot pass through quickly enough.
I have stopped eating bread for one and now have Ryvitas which are ok because they are rye and breakfast cereals containing wheat bran , weetabix, all bran, bran flakes for porridge,as oats are better for your digestive system.....apparently.
Title: Re: Heartburn
Post by: CLKD on October 24, 2015, 04:30:56 PM
Oats have been used North of the Border for years  ;)
DH eats a bowl of porridge with home grown soft fruits every morning for breakfast - slow release foods help keep energy levels even - apparently  ::)
Wouldn't touch Weetabix, bran etc..
I have had background heartburn intermittently all week but it's probably due to The Germ
Also I find too much butter can cause heartburn ….. could it be the oil in it?
Ryvitas  :-X  ;D ….. didn't know they were still available  ::)
Spelt is probably more digestible?

How have you been Dyan since the procedure  :-\

Not sure.  I thought it may have bern my iron tablets but didn't have one yesterday.   I did have a horlicks in bed last night, but am usually fine with that.

My cycle is all over the place.  I have bleeding for 5 weeks out of the last 6, which is why I need the iron tablets.  It's so hard not knowing what is causing it.

I agree about the frustration. Something that might set it off last week will be absolutely fine for me this week. I love horlicks but it sets me off big time. Too scared to eat anything these days. You have my sympathies  :)
