Hello all
Am I alone in finding the following emoticon offensive? :
:beat:
I noticed this yesterday in someone's posted message, and it seems to depict someone violently beating someone else over the head with a hammer.
I really don't think this is very pleasant and it's at odds with the generally supportive environment of this forum. Am I being too sensitive?
Best wishes

Sorry - but I think it's ok. We have used it before when a member has been a bit reluctant to go to the doc about something. I don't find it offensive but I can see that at first sight it might look a little strange.

Sorry I am with Taz on this one......It's just a bit of fun.
We have the grind and bump bananas, the one being prodded with a stick and the one being kicked up the bum.
We used to have one lady....Mrs Purple who had the very best smilies. She always made me smile.

Hmmm
honeyb - yes I've been around long enough to remember Mrs P and her emoticons.
Nope.....I still think that one is awful, - as is this one:
:kick:
...and this one isn't very nice either:
:poke2:
....all a bit childish. I detest anything depicting violence towards another. I wouldn't beat, kick or prod anyone in real life, so why is it remotely amusing?? That's my last comment on this matter. Peace! :)

I don't find it offensive. It's just a bit of fun. Don't know anyone who has objected in the past. But I know where you are coming from.
-
I guess we are all different and if there was one I didn't like then I wouldn't feel as if I had to use it but wouldn't mind others putting it in their posts.

I don't find them offensive. I think we need them because the written word often doesn't come across how we would say something.
For instance we might jokingly say someone needs "a kick up the bum" :kick: or we might want to say "Oi, you" :poke2:
It's to lighten the tone of the written word in my opinion.
And I also hate violence of any kind.

Have you never poked anyone, or nudged someone to reiterate a point :-\ ::) .......... I hate violence and was going to e-mail a Company last night after seeing an advert which smashed garden knomes >:( - but can't remember the Company :bang: :bang: :bang: - on the back of the Boston marathon horrors I thought that the particular advert is offensive.
-
I cant bear violence but i find all those emoticons amusing especially the way the purple one falls completely flat on it's face - it's just like slapstick. I could watch that and find it funny every time but that's just me.
We watched Fawlty Towers recently and I was very taken aback with the way Basil handled Polly in one particular episode. He was bundling her about like a sack of potatoes, mustve really hurt. I wouldnt have picked up on that at the time it first came out. I think we are all more sensitive to that sort of thing these days.
-
Do you mean the Ikea advert CLKD? If so I really like it - especially as there is a twist at the end! They are evil gnomes not the nice sort which you may have in your garden
I will put the link here (don't watch CLKD) but not sure if it is advertising! http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/ad-day-ikea-148648

I don't find them offensive. I also find them amusing and they can help put a point across really well! I think most people just use them in their own posts about themselves or to sum up poor service somewhere, but could see that if someone commented on my post and used it about my post I might mind.
-
CLKD - all I put in was "advert smashing garden gnomes". Not much time needed there - I did it while waiting for a school report to save! :na:

Not sure if I should be commenting on this thread but to be perfectly honest I think animated emoticons are the last thing on my mind. I'm just too sick :crutch: some days - I can't be bothered with things like this.

Hi English Rose - that emoticon does accurately portray my feelings of exasperation in several circumstances.
For example;
Pointing out to OH that the bins / recycling are done on Fridays - and have been for the last 10 years. This conversation happens every week, but it's a constant surprise to him.
Again with OH, banana skins are, and always have been compostable, and shouldn't go in with ordinary- non-recyclable rubbish.
With BT - when contacting them to report a phone line being out of order. Getting told to contact them online. But I haven't got any sort of phone connection at all, let alone online. SCREAM
The "offensive" emoticons suitably represent my emotions
-
OH Limpy we have similar conversations weekly too >:( - I think I started a thread somewhere :-\
-
CLKD - I haven't been paying attention - Sorry
Too busy taking the bins out! ;D
-
Oh the thread was several months ago ::)
-
oh - should have read the date - sorry :-\ I should have been paying attention. I'll shut up next time lol :-X
-
:clapping: Limpy, that made me laugh!! :thankyou:
-
In the bin pixie.
We won't tell honest

Whoops I just pressed the wrong button - as I said before - Where does one put a banana skin if no compost heap available :parti:
And thanks for clarifying HB x
-
Also guilty as charged re-banana skins as I put mine in kitchen bin which gets emptied into non recycable (is this a word, doesn't look right?) bin.
-
The thing with recycling is I fear it may all be in vain anyway.
About 6 weeks ago, I am sure that the recycling stuff (I can't spell recycleable either) went in the same bin lorry as the ordinary rubbish. Didn't want to ring council as that may upset binmen, who would then leave the bins further away from the house, and spill more, than they do at the moment!
-
It really annoys me when they leave stuff that they dropped >:(
-
Same thing happens here Limpy.
Which kind of goes back to my original point of why bother.

Angle - you are absolutely fine to post here ;)
We have a recyling thread - I think ???
