Title: 24 hours in A & E - the dangers of spinning
Post by: larkrise on June 21, 2012, 07:18:02 AM
Did anyone else see this last night.

A young girl collapsed after a spinning class and the muscle breakdown relesed toxins that caused her kidneys to fail.  In the end she had 3 operations to remove the poisoned muscle in her thighs and she had extensive physio to walk again.

See her interviewed HERE (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/24-hours-in-ae/articles/extended-patient-stories)

I was horrified that such extensive trauma could come from one spinning class but hubby says he sees it when he goes to the gym and it is very high intensity and quite violent.  Can't be good for you surely?

Blimey - that's horrific!  Still, it supports my refusal to take part in these things, can't be healthy for you ;)

Goodness.  Surely she must have had some underlying condition, although they never said.  Although one nurse did say she may already have had some kind of kidney problem, which was exacerbated  by the spinning class.  My daughter was trying to encourage me to try it.  I don't think so!!!

Kids used to spin, remember going round and round myself until the dizzyness stopped me.  Can't see what benefit it would have?

did she get severely dehydrated from excessive sweating and not drinking perhaps?
Spinning is only for the very fit imho. Better to ride the normal, boring bike-that-goes-nowhere more gently for 15 mins with the ipod in the ears methinks.

I agree oldsheep!  You can go faster/slower if you want and when you want, rather than keeping up with class.  I gave up doing classes like that some time ago, as I couldn't keep up.  It's all very well saying only do as much as you can, but the temptation would always be to go too far!

I tried it once. My legs ached for three days afterwards - never doing it again.
