Title: D You Have Any Heartburn Remedies?
Post by: Christine662 on November 30, 2011, 11:06:45 AM
Hi Ladies

The bain of my life at the moment is heartburn. :'(

Diet is so restricted, I am afraid to eat lots of things even though it may not be them that casues it. Chcolate, tea, peppermint all set me off definately within a day of having them.

Its a stinging pain, which spreads into back etc. Get red hot boobs too with it. If I take Omeprazole it goes within day or 2, but dont really want to take them forever...

Do you have any more natural remedies for me & anyone else who suffers?

Thanks

Stumpy xx

Hi Stumpy - as ever I am going to ask whether you have had this checked out. New stomach pain should always be reported to the doc - especially once we are getting towards our "middle" years  ;D ;D

I've had reflux/indigestion in the past... omniprazole didn't work for me, made it worse infact  :'(

BUT what did work was acidophilis. I take one capsule a day now (the yoghurts and drinks just aren't strong enough) and, touch wood, I rarely have problems these days.

I also found that it was normally worse when I felt most stressed?

Wishing you some relief! I know how horrible it is!

Hi Taz

mmm dont know if you remember way back in May i think it was I came on MM scared with the pain (all new then)...and was advised by you lovely ladies to go to A&E as it was so bad? Was agony, no stomach pain which was most scary. All in the chest.

I did & the diagnosed heartburn, prescribed Omeprazole (gave me 2 that night which worked within mins)...I have been on them on & off ever since. But would prefer something more natural. Dont like taking any drugs if can help it, as since this peri lark I am worried all the time about side efffects etc. Silly I know, years ago woudl pop them without thinking.

Hi Grumpy...where do you get that from? I am Mrs Stress!!! over nothing, OH says Im not happy unless fretting about something or nothing...today its the upcoming mammogram tomorrow...they dropped the age range & I fell into the first random group they called in...fabulous eh.

Don't worry about the mammogram Stumpy, I had my first one earlier this year.  Slight discomfort but thats all.
Nothing to worry about.

I get my acidophilis from Holland and Barrett http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=753&prodid=809&cid=145&sid=0 (http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=753&prodid=809&cid=145&sid=0). I have found it to work although I have been thinking of another called fem-dophilis, which I think I'd have to buy off the web and is a lot more expensive  ???

I got into a cycle of anxiety when my reflux was at it's worst - I was getting sharp pains in my chest and worried myself sick, so they happened all the more. When you're stressed, you'll just notice every little twinge and the stress feeds back on itself. Ahh, the theory is so simple though, eh?! In my head, the stress/anxiety comes from fear, and doing something to take control helps me a lot (like taking the acidophilis).

Well, I think you're allowed a bit of worry over your mammo but once it's over you'll feel much better  :). Good luck Stumpy, I'm sure it'll all work out just fine (I've had several and it's over in no time - promise!)

Aloe Vera juice is very effective.

I think I have said before that I was on PPIs for over ten years and taking increasingly stronger ones all the time.

After a visit to an alternative practitioner I was prescribed herbal drops called Centaurium. You take 15 drops in a little water before meals and it prepares your stomach for food and helps the digestive process. It certainly worked for me and now I can eat almost what I want and never take anything stronger than Gaviscon.

It was not easy to start with and I did suffer for about two weeks before things started to improve and in this period I used Aloe Vera.

Did you know that long term use of Omeprazole causes stomach problems  :o

You have my sympathy its a horrible thing. I did not even eat out eventually.

Stumpy your stress levels can make digestion problems worse, as they say they the stomach is the second brain.

http://www.wholisticresearch.com/info/artshow.php3?artid=1

If you google stomach and second brain you will come up with loads of info on it, it is a scientific fact.

Hi Stumpy - I had forgotten about your chest pain etc. Do you mean that nobody has ever investigated as to why you have this pain? I think that I would want to find out what it was rather than just keep taking things to dumb it down but, then again, I do like to discover why something's happening in my body  ;D

Stumpy have you ever taken Ibuprofen? I had my first bout of this 10 years ago, ended up with endoscopy and it was due to Ibuprofen.  Got a bad bout at the moment which has been going on for a couple of months, had an endoscopy a few weeks ago and it was all clear.  Doc said might just have a very sensitive tummy. I have Lanzaprazole but they don't make me feel that great so Im on the manuka honey which was recommended for this problem (GERD).  You just don't know what to eat, ive lost over a stone.

Hi

No Taz no investigations...at the A&E they done ecg, blood tests etc...and said its heartburn & GP jsut does a repeat script.

I have had almonds recommended on the link from silverlady & some manuka honey thats lurking in the kitchen & feels loads better.

Even on days I do take the omeprazole it still gets me sometimes.

I am not goign to take it tomorrow & use the honey & almonds to see what happens.

On the leaflet with the omeprazole....one of the side effects..chest pains!!!

I think it's really bad that they haven't investigated. I know the test i.e. endoscopy may not be that pleasant to undergo but at least they would get a good look at what's happening in your oesophagus and stomach.

It's such an uncomfortable feeling. Do you find it is worse if you lay on your right side? I do.

I find it easier if I lie on right side as well.

I tend to feel better lying down anyway really.

Chocolate, tea (cant believe it) and peppermint seem to be the main culprits.

I always find it odd that i dont feel acid in tum, just pain/heat/tingling in chest.

Hi Stumpy did you see my previous post about Ibuprofen, apparently a lot of people can end up with this problem if they can't take it?

Stumpy

Go and lie down for me. Find a point in the middle of your chest (breast bone) move your hand down until you meet the first soft bit at the very top of your stomach. Press firmly down with your fingers. Ifs its painful and tender then its acid reflux.
Never sleep flat on your back always prop up your pillows or the head of your bed. Never bend from the waist always squat. Dont ever let your stomach become empty small snacks regularly. Dont drink milk or alcohol.

Oh and lastly......Try the alternative remedies. Please give it a go....my life was miserable and I cant tell you how much it helped me.

If you are going to take PPIs then take them last thing at night. The stomach produces more acid at night than in the day time.

Sorry to sound bossy but I know how difficult this can be.

Hi Rosalie - no I dont use Ibuprofen, I take Paramol if I need painkiller.

I am going to go with the alternatives from Silverladys link...seemed to help yesterday when I did.

Hi HB - did you get the heat/pain spread into your boobs and/or back when you got it. Sometimes they feel on fire. (or that may be hormones)?

I find Gaviscon is the best thing. A quick glug and it calms everything down instantly. Used to take Zantac but found that made things worse because the longer I took it, the longer it went on.

I get excess acid quite a lot because several things seem to set it off: if I don't eat for a long while, if I'm stressed, when I have a cold virus (not sure why that is but it always affects my acid levels), and when I'm feeling really 'hormonal' and flushed.

I have recently bought Manuka Honey 10+ which seems to calm things down temporarily (a tip I got from other ladies on this site) and I'm also making my way through a pack of Prebio (Holland & Barrett), which contains several good bacteria. Not sure if it's helping yet cos I've just gone down with yet another cold (3rd since beginning of October!) so my acid's kicked off again. But I'm persevering with it.

Stumpy, I had a terrible long bout of heartburn and ? gallbladder.  All cured with posture changes.  I was slumping over computer and muscles had shortened and got trigger points (mini contractions) and thing just couldn't move along and be digested properly.

BUT (shouting here) agree with Taz - please get the endoscopy and rule out ulcer, h Pylori, sphincter issues and so on and then try all the other stuff.

It is not responsible medicine to not have a scope or CT scan.  Scope is best because can biopsy for h Pylori which is a very frequent culprit and Ct involves quite a bit of radiation.

Now go DO it.

Hi I suffered with heartburn and reflux it was there 24/7 and then tightness across chest. Doc gave me lansporazole and they worked straight away but it got bad again so had to have camera down throat, and have found I have hiatus hernia which has caused it all. I gave up smoking 18 months again and it has got 100% better as smoking was agravating it. I do occasionally get heartburn if I have over eaten and can take a gaviscon tablet (not taken with other) and it is gone.

I've had 3 endoscopies over the years (such fun they are  :P but quick at least) and the hearburn got a lot worse in peri.
I tried everything and am now on omeprazole 20mg daily which I take in the evening. With meno I got irregular heartbeat from the vagus nerve area and omepraz helps that too. Gastric reflux runs in my family.

Honey is on my banned list from the specialist (dunno why) as is cooked tomato, pulses and beans and anything cabbagey.  It def overlaps with my IBS which is loads better due to the new diet. (having said that, i cheat on the cooked tomato if I've remembered to take my omeprazole  ;D)
I would say have an endoscope done if you can, to rule anything out as long term heartburn is horrible.
