Title: Mirena side effects, can I still hope they’ll go?
Post by: EleanorB on December 24, 2025, 01:06:31 PM
Hi,

Anyone who can offer any hope that this could change, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also, obviously, those who experienced similar and it didn’t change, very helpful to know too.

I have a mirena coil for the progesterone part of my hrt. I can’t tolerate progesterone vaginally (thrush) patches (violent migraine and terrible mood issues) The first one caused a few weeks of side effects which subsided. This was replaced with a new one nine weeks ago. I am prone to severe lower back pain which has been off the charts since a week post insertion. I am housebound with it and on painkillers round the clock. The GP and gynae have advised hanging in there as it can take 12 weeks for the increased level of progesterone to subside and with it the side effects. I don’t have any other side effects bar sore ish breasts.

Anyone been in this position? There’s a lot riding on this as I’m 57 and when I went into menopause at around 50 it turned my world upside down. My cognition was so bad I had dementia tests, migraine went crazy, my mood was insufferable. If I can’t find a way to have progesterone I think I’m looking at early retirement, which I can’t afford. But I can’t tolerate this level of back pain much longer. I had an mri a year ago of back, the issue is almost certainly muscular, I’m hypermobile which doesn’t help.
