Title: Post menopausal bleeding
Post by: Gabby1971 on November 15, 2025, 03:43:41 PM
Hello I am new to the forum and find myself here after a very worrying week. I am 54 and three years period free, after a relatively smooth menopause. Prior to the menopause I had heavy periods every two weeks and then it was as though somebody had just switched off the tap and they stopped. My worry all started approximately 2 to 3 weeks ago when I was experiencing lots of acid reflex which eventually subsided. This was followed by extremely sore breasts, needing to go to the loo for a number two a lot more frequently for two or three days, feeling very emotional and crying and anxiety high. I joked and said to my mum if I didn’t know better I would think I was getting a period as everything was textbook and sure enough the Wednesday morning I woke to a period. I was shocked. I had light bleeding for a day or so and then Thursday evening it came really heavy just like I used to have them. I contacted my GP and have been referred to Gynae with an appointment on this Thursday coming but I am beside myself with worry. I work in a GP surgery and they seem less concerned as I have had all the period symptoms but I have read everywhere you cannot just get a period after the menopause. without an underlying reason! Anybody else had this concern. I have never so much as had a stomach pain, cramps, spotting or anything until now. Thankyou

Periods may stop, then Mother Nature pulls a fast 1 and hey presto! we begin to bleed. Again. Then stop.  etc.. Mine waxed and waned for several years, I knew it was The Change so wasn't worried.

Acid reflux is common: as oestrogen levels drop muscles mayB lax = aches and pains; including the digestive tract .  Also the body may become dry: inside and out; deep in the ears, nostrils, eyes, vagina, skin .......

Your symptoms sound hormonally generated especially the sore breasts.  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use. During my regular years 10 mins B4 a bleed began I would have to 'dash', even if a period wasn't due!

Of course you can, it's nicknamed the swansong, and is relatively common, although sensible to get checked out just to be on the safe side.

Accompanying PMS like symptoms are reassuring as your colleagues said.

Most incidences never come to medical attention, plus pretty much every gynaecological textbook was written by men, so the phenomenon is underrecognised.
