I've been weary/tired a lot this year so bought some VitD from a pharmacy. I've taken 1 table every night for 3 weeks thus far: have woken in the early hours with a dry mouth and the restless leg syndrome has been unbearable :-\
Something in the product doesn't agree! So haven't taken a pill for 3 nights and symptoms have improved. Is there a yellow card system for OTC products?
-
Yes there is a Yellow card system on Gov.uk. I've started taking vit D again for the winter but think it disturbs my sleep if I take at night. It also has magnesium and calcium in it and I've got the higher 25mg or 1000iu strength so only take it every other day. I'm going to Lanzarote in a few days so won't need it then.

I was taking vit d + k2 for osteopenia but after a few months, I was getting horrific cramps in my feet and lower legs through the night, apparently a symptom of too much vit d,so stopped, will start on a lower dose one for winter

:thankyou:

It's very rare to have side effects from taking VitD unless you overdose on them. My dose is 2,000IU.
Because I am on long term PPI's I take them on a daily basis year round, I always cover up when in the sun, but since I have been on VitD, B12 and Zinc supplements the awful tiredness I was suffering from has gone and no other side effects from them, just good results.

I don't think it's as rare as you'd think.
I over dosed on 1000 vitD and 400 calcium. This was okay'd by my surgery's Clinical Pharmacist after I was diagnosed with osteopenia.
I only took them for a month and it took another month to recover. Personally I won't now take any higher than the normal 400 NHS recommendation for VitD. I never want to feel that ill again.
-
My GP initially prescribed 3,000iu - one can't buy OTC anything stronger.
I'm due a blood test in Dec because I take statins though DH is never called ::) and we take the same: so will request a VitD test then.

Yeah agree Aprilflower,it’s fairly easy to over dose as I don’t think you wee out excess like other vitamins 🤷♀️
-
Absolutely.
The problem is not the VitD so much as it's relationship to calcium (whether you are taking extra calcium or not). The calcium builds up in the blood and then there's trouble.
The surgery had no idea what my natural levels, of either were, before they told me what to take.
So unnecessary 🙄

I hate taking any tablets even vitamins and don't if I can help it, but I was getting aching muscles and feeling tired alot lately. I started on multivitamins too but my pee turned bright yellow, a sign of excess B vitamins so stopped as probably don't need them. I'm just taking the vit d now if I go a few days with no sun not daily.

That’s why so many Drs are against calcium tablets as the calcium can build anywhere and not even the bones where it’s needed. That’s why I stopped the calcium tablets I was given by my Dr. 🤷♀️
-
Interesting. Many Consultants suggest that our bodies don't require supplements due to the 'additives' ::). This morning I didn't wake with a dry mouth and although I'm aware of my legs 'pulling', I didn't need Nurofen last night.

Yes, and with regard to osteopenia, 50% of women over 50 have it. I think the Royal Osteoporosis Society, says osteopenia does not need treatment. If this is the case why are GPs pushing supplements??
-
Wow,where were you when I needed you Aprilflower, I didn’t know this and was somewhat devastated when I was told 4 years ago after a dexa scan that I had osteopenia and my gp immediately gave me calcium, wasn’t until I’d watched a tv programme about it and how so many Drs said DO NOT TAKE IT that I decided to stop.
That’s good clkd, hopefully you can find a happy medium

This is very informative.

What was your vitD level when you started?

Thank you Aprilflower, all good to know :)
Tbh Taz, I don’t know, the Dr suggested it because of the lack of sun in Scotland ;D Means vit d needed especially in winter. I’d been taking it for at least 6 months when the dr did a blood test for certain vitamins as my nails were splitting and the results were all normal, maybe I should’ve stopped then 🤷♀️
-
Ditto Jaypo. I was never tested by my surgery.
I think they just assumed I must be deficient because I have osteopenia, which is stupid.
-
I paid privately for my test this year and last year as my doctor wouldn't do it. I was taking the normal dose but was still slightly under at 44 so am on a higher dose now for three months. My partner had his done at the doctor's as part of his check up. He's been taking a multivitamin which includes VitaminD but his result was only 32 (50 is the lowest it should be) so he's on 20,000 three times a week by prescription.

It’s terrible you have to get these things done privately, it was only because of my nails the dr decided to do mine . All the conflicting advice is ridiculous, especially on the calcium and Vit d .
Again thanks Aprilflower, I feel less worried now, I was waiting for my legs to snap like a twig 🙄😆 why do they never tell you these things and automatically throw calcium at you 🤷♀️

Hello ladies.
I recently Googled the symptoms of iron deficiency and realised that I tick quite a few of the boxes, brittle nails being one of them.
I have now been prescribed iron tablets for the next three months and hopefully I will notice an improvement.
Incidentally, my blood test was a routine one due to my Ulcerative Colitis diagnosis and although the Ferritin level was below the cut off for deficiency my GP did not contact me. When I saw the results on MyChart I emailed to ask if I needed more tests and was then prescribed iron tablets.
I also take other supplements including Vitamin D but I sort of mix and match so that I don't over consume them.
Take care ladies.
