Title: Swollen Ankles
Post by: greysky on September 22, 2025, 04:08:20 PM
Swollen Ankles.
Went to the GP. High BP there so did a weeks worth of readings and it's high. Something/94
Doctor recommended Amlodipine.
Side effect is Swollen Ankles.

Blood tests back - they look mostly Ok to me - but I'm not a doctor.
No mention of HRT at that appointment - I assume it shows up on the system though.

Can HRT cause high blood pressure? Can a change of HRT make the difference?

Which regime of HRT has been prescribed, U may have mentioned elsewhere  :-\

Swollen ankles should be taken seriously.  Have U been advised to sleep/sit with legs elevated above hip line?  Quite uncomfortable at night  ::).  What is 'amiodipiine'?

Oral estradiol can theoretically increase blood pressure. Transdermal typically does not. Some progestogens including micronised progesterone can also cause fluid retention - this is very variable between individuals.

If you need blood pressure lowering medication and had swollen ankles before starting amlodipine you would be better asking for a diuretic antihypertensive instead.

If your ankles have swollen only since starting the amlodipine then there are multiple alternative options for BP control.

The above assumes your GP has already excluded any worrying causes of ankle swelling.
