Hi all. Does anyone keep getting woken by low blood sugar. Particularly after the tiniest amount of wine or carbs. I'm struggling. This is happening quite often now. Can't sleep for around 2 hours then calms down. I'm not the greatest of sleepers due to hysterectomy 30 years ago and ovaries removed 10 years ago. On Evorel 25. Can't tolerate any higher. Age 62. I had this issue, revealed by a CGM.
For me it was being caused by the low dose of mirtazapine that I took for insomnia, which I have now reduced.
What I found helpful (confirmed by CGM) was a slow carb snack at bedtime with 2 teaspoonfuls of cornstarch.
There is scientific research supporting cornstarch for preventing hypoglycemia.
I am hormone replete including testosterone and don't drink alcohol.

I bought the yellow tub of cornstarch powder called Argo.
After experimenting with mixing it in different hot and cold drinks and foods, I found the best way for me was to mix it into a chocolate protein dessert 🙂
Perfect blood glucose all night.
I no longer need this however having reduced my mirtazapine down to 3.75mg.

PS I don't know if they are still doing it but dexcom had a free sample of a CGM that you could get online if you said you had diabetes.
This is how I identified my nocturnal hypoglycemia issue and worked out how to fix it.
It took three 10 day sensors - I got a free sample, then my husband got one, then the cat 😂.

Haha the cat! Thanks for this. I mixed 2 tsp with milk last nite and slept til 4.30. Had an hour awake. Felt a little shaky but not as bad as previous nites. I'm due a hrt review with gp. I'll discuss with her. I could really do with upping my patches but I have 2 benign breast lumps and my boobs get painful with anything higher. Been going on for 10 years since ovary removal. Thanks again.

Breast pain usually goes but increasing gradually can often avoid it. If you get a 50 patch you can cut some off it.

Wow...this is amazing....last few nights mornings I wake up and feel really sickly and far away feeling - sit and feel dizzy if jump up.
Only this morning at 4am when woke again to go to loo(nightmare as get older) think I think low blood sugar.
Had thought it was high BP but doubt you wake up with that. Or maybe Vagifem....stated again for VA after several years free from symptoms
Will try some cornstarch and milk last thing - see if it helps. Am waking early too about 4am ish then daft thoughts keep me awake

In the 1990s NAPS advised me to eat every 3 hours, 24/7 to stop that awful yawing empty feeling. [The National Association for Pre-menstrual Syndrome]. I try to stick to that now. I had biscuits by the bed and my puppy soon realised :D

Sheila99 thank you. I'm currently trying 1 and half 25 patches so will see how it goes. Its rubbish this menopause isn't it.

Old Frumpy (I'm sure you're not). I read you can mix with yogurt but I didn't want to risk sugar last thing at nite so used milk. Good luck!

Hubby would say I am Old Grumpy!!!!
Will try with a little milk......some 60 years plus on a memory of my Gran mixing cornflour with milk if I had a bout of dia......(wont say just incase some still eating.)
Plus I sometimes take d mannose and that goes down in water so am sure milk will help.

Just to update.....the cornflour mix cold milk....about half teacup really helped. Slept a good 90 mins more and certainly less queasy first thing.
Shall keep going...then give it a rest for few nights and see if it returns

Oh that's good news. Its helping me too! I'm also trying to up my Evorel slowly. And having a little snack before bed. Wheat crackers and peanut butter last night. Thanks for everyone's help
