Title: Postpone smear test?
Post by: Kai_63 on August 21, 2025, 08:44:04 AM
I had a smear test a few months ago and it came back saying '(GA) - Multiple minor discrepancies(two or more)'.

They said to repeat the test around now. I'm now wondering if I had thrush during the test (as it's been recurring recently).

I'm peri and on HRT (including vaginal) so it can be hard to tell the difference between thrush (I don't tend to get much discharge but the Canestan tablet always sorts it) and vaginal atrophy.

I think I have thrush again so should I postpone the smear for the time being until it's resolved? I think thrush can affect results?

That's an unusual way to report a cervical screening test.

Normally they only now test for the HPV virus, which is either present or absent.

Sometimes a sample can be insufficient/damaged or otherwise unable to be processed.

But I don't know what is meant by your results.

Thrush shouldn't affect the ability to detect HPV.

I would book the test, you can always take an oral fluconazole tablet the week before it.

Also consider your systemic estrogen levels - if you didn't have VA and need vaginal estrogen, you would be less likely to get thrush and also better able to identify it if you did.

Thank you for your help. The test is on Saturday so I think I'll need to postpone to be on the safe side.

My VA is much better as I don't get any pain during sec or UTIs which I used to get a lot. I think I'm being reinfected with thrush by either my partner or even my clothing which I understand can happen. I've read that you should boil wash underwear at 60 degrees and add vinegar to the rinse wash.
