Title: Brown discharge
Post by: Betsy123 on August 05, 2025, 09:41:46 AM
I haven't been on here for a while. Have been experiencing extreme anxiety followed by a brown discharge. Have been on hrt everol conti for a few years and not had any major issues. Have struggled with panic attacks and anxiety for a while but these had eased and developed an ectopic beat during peri which I still have and manage with a beta blocker. I have an appointment booked with gp this week  but have been getting cramps and back ache alongside the discharge. My anxiety has been awful and feeling emotionally tearful all the time. Should I stop the hrt or keep taking at the moment. I'm always confused as to whether this is too much or too little oestragon. I really can't face the roller coaster again. Any advice 🙏

Hi!  which symptom did U want to ease B4 deciding on using HRT?

A brown discharge for me was usual.  I would bleed heavily with clots for days with excruciating pains.  2 days after the end of each period I would have a brown stain with intense itching high up.  As my hormones dropped there wasn't enough to push the final blood through which was why it was brown. Every month so it never bothered me.

It may be that your own hormones aren't enough to over ride the replacement which can happen.  Keep on with the HRT until U have the appt., taking a list of worries with you.  It mayB that your dose needs hiking.

Let us know how you get on.

This does need to be checked out by a GP but is extremely unlikely to represent anything sinister.

I would not consider stopping your hormone therapy as the last thing you need is to add untreated menopause on top of everything else you are dealing with.

Evorel conti has only 50mcg of estradiol which is a low dose and often insufficient to provide effective treatment - your discharge may well be related to genitourinary syndrome of menopause.

However dosing should be individualised and guided by both absence of hypoestrogenic symptoms and long term health goals being met eg maintenance of bone density.

Thanks for the advice. I'm 56 so not had a bleed as such for a few years so was a bit concerned.  I've replaced the patch as usual but have had lower back pain and a few cramps. I am going through a stressful time at the moment as well so not sure if this could be playing a part.

Original symptoms were panic and anxiety and waking at 4am each day. Never really struggled with hot sweats but have been waking up with sweat around back of neck and hair again lately. Ectopic beat has always been scary and at the start went away with hrt. I have managed this but just wish it would disappear altogether.  I've never been great on progesterone which has always resulted in low mood.

Hello Betsy

I am post meno and my HRT regime has been Sandrena gel and Utrogestan.

A brown stain would often appear in my pants in the evenings, subsequent investigations showed that everything was fine so I thought the staining was possibly due to vaginal dryness.

For the last few months I have come off HRT as I want to see where I am naturally and  the brown staining has stopped. My vaginal dryness symptoms felt more intense for a while but that has now resolved making me believe that HRT was the cause of the frequent brown staining.

I think you are wise to see your GP but if everything is okay you may want to consider tweaking your HRT.

Wishing you well and please let us know how you get on.

Take care.

K.
