Title: Sensation of falling while half asleep
Post by: juliaC on July 15, 2025, 12:09:02 AM
I'm just wondering if this is a peri or meno symptom.

I woke up 3 times this morning with the sensation of falling.  Maybe there were works taking place on underground pipes nearby I don't know.  I'm sure if so it was way less dramatic than it felt while I was asleep.  Or is this a known meno symptom?

There is probably a specific name for this condition, which I've had since forever.  I feel as though I am tripping up a kerb  :o or falling down a slope.

It's a very common thing. It happens to my hubby, kids and even the dogs so no, I wouldn't say it's down to peri/menopause.

Not being critical of you personally but...
I really wish women would not assume that everything is down to menopause just because they've reached "a certain age".  :)

These are called hypnic jerks. You can either experience them just as you fall asleep or you can wake from sleep with the sensation of dropping through the floor.  Can be caused by stress, lack of sleep or alcohol use.

I usually fall off a kerb! Not peri or menopausal as did it even as a child and always when just falling asleep.

Thanks, I didn't realise this, I was only aware of those with a dream of falling.

Oh yes I know that one, and I did that as a child too, those pesky kerbs  ;D  This seemed different as there was no dream and it happened 3 times, just as I was drifting off each time  >:(  Not had it before but glad to hear it's commonplace
