Title: Can perimenopause last more than 11 years
Post by: Donnal1964 on July 10, 2025, 12:25:22 AM
I have been going through perimenopause for 11 years now. I've had one month and 1 week free where when I've wiped there has been nothing. I'm having days of veins in jelly and brick red when I wipe but not on the pad. I should say this isn't a constant thing. It comes towards early evening and then gone by bed time, usually repeating the pattern the next day

Morning.  Peri can last for years  ::).  What R your periods doing?

Peri are those years that we notice various changes and may develop various uncomfortable symptoms.  My periods waxed and waned for several years B4 the final bleed = menopause.  Though Mother Nature may throw in a curved ball because the ovaries still pump out hormone occasionally which may represent symptoms.

For several years I would get period like pains and think "On no not after all these years!"

How is your vagina?  Do read the various threads about vaginal atrophy - make notes ;-).  It may be that there is thin tissue which bleeds on contact.

How do U feel overall?

I would say Yes. It can last for years, I think they say it can last about 10 years.

What other peri symptoms do you have? Are your periods changing in length or duration and are they heavier or lighter?

Most other symptoms have gone, today I've had some stringy dark with black tiny clots in it. I just wondered how long this latest phase lasts. I can say that March I was totally free of anything

It's difficult to know how long stages last. Are you still having periods?

Has this discharge being going on for years consistently or is it a recent thing? Perimenopause symptoms can last for 10 years +.  Then you are into post menopause symptoms, so they can just roll on for years....  If you have been a year without a full period then you are post menopausal.  In any case, if you hare having daily bloody discharge for any length of time I would suggest a visit to your gp.  I would have spotting just before and for a few days after a period but it stops then.  If I was having daily bloody discharge that has gone on for weeks, I'd be having it investigated.

Post menopause is after periods have stopped.  Gone. Though Mother Nature may throw in the odd bleed if ovaries still function.

Let us know how U R getting on?

Hello Donnal.

I never noticed any perimeno symptoms and if I did have any, I didn't recognise them as such.
My periods went from full on and regular as always to nothing at all for six months, however I then experienced some stringy spotting and thought another period was on it's way however it never materialised and I became post menopausal.
My point is that your situation may be your body trying to have a period but I agree with GraceM that an appointment with your GP is a good idea.

Wishing you well and please keep us updated.

K.

Thanks everyone, Dr said nothing to worry about. I've had a couple of clear days and it was slightly red earlier but usually gone within an hour again
