Title: HRT at 62?
Post by: Janisconfused on March 10, 2025, 12:00:16 PM
Hi, I’m 62 and had a total hysterectomy in 2011. I used oestrogen patches for a couple of years but nothing since. I recently saw a new (trainee) GP who thinks I should go back on the patches to help with my fatigue.

I’m just unsure - if they will help with fatigue I don’t know why another GP hasn’t suggested it before, but if they might help then I’d love to give it a go. I left a message to speak to my usual GP for her opinion but just had the same doctor call me again!

Does anyone have any advice please? Thanks  :)

Morning.   :welcomemm:   Fatigue can be caused by lots of issues: when did U last have a thyroid function and VitD blood test?  When I had low VitD I would do 20 mins weeding then sit. Still.  For 2 hours.  Supplement cured those symptoms

Browse round.  Make notes.  Ask away.

Thanks for your reply, and your welcome!
I’ve had a whole range of blood tests recently, including thyroid and vitamin D. Nothing significant is showing up. :-\

Hi Janisconfused
I am also 62 and am on HRT, I started taking it at 58.  Although I do not absorb the patchs' or gel very well I do feel the benefit a little.Still also very fatigued, which may also be to other health concerns.  I am on 4 x pumps a day and only last week had a reading of 182 with my results, at one point I was at 380 so we are wondering why the drop. Nonetheless GP says it is still a good result based on the protection for the bones and heart, which is paramount and definitely worth you going back on it. Have you had a Testosterone check? Low levels are also a factor for feeling unwell as well. My GP has said she will consider prescribing Testosterone for me as I am consistently having readings of <0.07. which is out of the normal range. I have zero sex drive, it was an issue with my ex husband and also a subsequent relationship and I do wonder had I had the hormones given to me back then, life may have been different. If it helps with middle weight gain and fatigue I am grateful for any help I can get, I just dont want to be feeling all the feels when I am no longer with a partner!!

The NHS won't do a full thyroid function screening, I'm sure some1 will be along with more on that.  GPs tend to believe the 'normal' blood test even when the patient continues to complain of symptoms.

You've not nothing to loose trying it, if it don't work or doesn't suit then just stop using it. If it works then great.

I’m not sure how to reply to individual posts, but thank you all so much for your comments – I really appreciate them!

U don't have to reply individually:

i.e. X - tnx for the information
B - I like that suggestion .........

Some practitioners believe that over 60 is 'too old' to begin HRT but quality of life is important.
