I'd be interested in hearing about experiences of anyone who has had surgery for hiatus hernia please. It's something I am considering (for my paraoesophageal HH) so it would be helpful to garner opinions/information from women who have personally actually had this surgery (rather than hearsay).
e.g.
What type of HH did you have?
At what point was surgery deemed potentially beneficial?
Was your surgery successful?
How long was the recovery?

I'm afraid I can't actually answer your questions but noticed your post because I have had a flareup of indigestion this week and know that I have a hiatus hernia (diagnosed around 10 years ago). I briefly read about treatments here https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hiatus-hernia/ but then had a chance conversation yesterday with a guy who has had the surgery. I was quite shocked to hear that he still has strict rules about what he is allowed to eat. The conversation arose from me buying chocolate and he said he is not allowed to eat it most of the time. Just 1 tiny bit once a month is his limit.

As you probably know, there are several foodstuffs and drinks which aggravate HH symptoms. Whilst I can happily live without ingesting citrus fruits for example, I refuse to give up chocolate, coffee and alcohol. All a matter of balance IMO.

I think he was advised by the surgeon that eating chocolate would 'undo/cancel out' the benefits of the surgery!

I have a HH. The symptoms flared horrifically earlier this year seemingly out of nowhere.
Unrelated I was diagnosed with pre diabetes so I have been eating a lot less bread and starchy food and TOUCH wood the symptoms seem to have improved massively.
I’ve also taken to wearing unwired crop tops rather than wired bras. I do recall years ago this was one of the things I was advised to to by the hospital.
Someone at my work’s BF is about to have the surgery in a few months but his is very much bigger than mine

Just out of interest, how do you know that the person at your work has a much bigger one than you do? Have you had an endoscopy fairly recently? I wonder how much they grow over time. I am getting symptoms intermittently and just using occasional over the counter antacid treatments. I really don't want to take something long term. My bras have always been unwired.

I had Nissen Fundoplication for a 5cm paraesophagael hernia

I ended up going private as I wasn't taken seriously by NHS or offered surgery
Was your surgery successful?
100% success
How long was the recovery?
I was laid up for 4 days, moved to the sofa on the 5th day and was properly mobile and functioning 2 weeks after surgery, the hardest part was the very strict food regime before and after surgery.
I hope this answers all your questions, I'm really pleased I got it done and would do it again rather than go back to pumping myself with medication, watching what I ate and vomiting in my sleep.
And by the way I can eat and drink anything I want now, even chocolate ::)
