Title: Running and vaginal atrophy
Post by: Borchesterlass on February 22, 2025, 05:37:39 PM
Hi I’m 69 and run three times a week . My VA s pretty dire and a private gyno has upped my vagifem . However I’m experiencing a minute amount of spotting for a nano second about once a week when I wipe after a wee. I’m wondering if my running could be aggravating my vaginal walls . Any other runners out there ? I had my last period at 45 so it’s all pretty grim down there !

Not a runner but had to stop swimming due to the chlorine in the swimming baths causing problems. I can swim in the sea though. Can't ride my bike anymore either, everything down there just goes numb if i do.

Yep, grim about covers VA.

The advice is usually to insert the product prescribed into the vagina every night for at least 2-3 weeks.  To plump up the vaginal walls.  Any slight blood is probably due to the vaginal wall tissues being really thin = paper cut bleeds/spots.  Some require it every night for years, others can reduce to enable them to remain comfortable.

How often did your gyno suggest using?

Every night for a month and then five days a week for another month then go  back . Also to use victory oil and probiotics for vagina

I had the  numbness too . Never associated it with VA before though . Just thought it was the saddle !

It's lack of blood circulation, I can get it also sitting on any hard surface for a long time.
Are you using a moisturiser as well when you go running, that might help with friction, is victory oil a moisturiser?

I've never heard of Victory oil but incredibly expensive, there are much cheaper moisturisers that will have the same effect, its the oestrogen that will do all the hard work for you.
You don't say how long you have been on treatment but it takes four months to start to have any effect, go easy on your body until you start to feel comfortable again.

I’ve been on vagifem 2 a week for the last 11 years . Victory oil is a moisturiser .

2 a week ain't enough!  Many need nightly treatment plus moisturiser or estriol on the outer labia areas.

As your body is getting older the two a week is just not sufficient to control symptoms I expect.
A nasty condition that affects us all differently, I am on a daily dose of Vagifem, Estriol cream to smear on the outside and a moisturiser, if I decrease the dose the symptoms immediately come back.

Hopefully by increasing the dose of Vagifem it will relieve the symptoms.

I agree with the others who've said to increase your usage. It may be worth doing another loading dose to help get you back to a good place.

I'm a runner - 3 x a week. Dont have VA so can't comment on that but I would suggest also getting suitable knickers for running. I can thoroughly recommend a company called Runderwear. My husband bought me a pair for Christmas & they are lovely to wear, especially on long runs. Not cheap but worth it!

Have you asked your gynae about affect of running on VA ?

Hope you don’t mind me asking.
I’ve got some prolapse but really need to do more walking/running to get some weight off.

She said running had protected my bones . I always make sure I use a moisturiser to avoid chaffing or rubbing . I’ve never been told I’ve got a prolapse. Would guess you would need some advice from a professional.

Thanks for reply. I’m going to start with more walking & see how that goes.
I will get some professional advice before attempting any running but at the moment can’t see myself doing it.

I just thought I would mention this here as there is talk of exercise in the thread.
I had come to the conclusion that Vagifem had stopped working because a flare up was lasting too long but it coincided with what I now know is sciatica, the first time I have ever suffered with it. Because of where the nerve is situated it of course affected the whole surrounding area making anyone who suffers with Vaginal Atrophy sciatica will make the condition worse. The only thing that helped me was to increase my Vagifem dose to two a day and that gave me instant relief.

The sciatica is now calming down as is the VA symptoms and I am back to my usual one a day but I thought I would mention it, perhaps an exercise that includes the piriformis muscle might be a good preventative measure for the future for anyone with VA.

My VA and vulva pain has compromised the Obturator Internus muscle which has tightened according to one physio I saw. I can also feel that it has.

Nerve irritation will cause surrounding muscles to tighten in defence. The more irritated the nerves tighter the muscle.

VA is the nerve irritation followed by the muscle tightening more so if the VA gets worse.

Excercise for me now is walking. Running would probably now be too pounding and riding a bike no good either.

I could never run with this condition, VA but walking is very good particularly for sciatica and I expect other conditions involving nerves and muscles.
The only time I ever ran was for a bus, that was hundreds of years ago it feels  ;D
