Title: Olive oil
Post by: ElkWarning on December 14, 2024, 10:43:24 AM
Don't know whether I'm going bonkas but:

A few months back my dog (who's nearly 14) developed a limp. Off to the vets. Arthritis diagnosed, pain killers prescribed.

Now, I don't like the idea of long term pain relief because I think it does something weird to the stomach, so I try him on a natural oil-based supplement. After three weeks (where I've been carrying him around a lot), he's much better and back to his old self. Hurrah.

And then I get to thinking 'If it works for the dog, then maybe it'll work for me' (osteoarthritis). I do consider just squirting his supplement on my food, but then decide to plump for high quality olive oil (2 x tablespoons daily) and eating loads of fish.

After two weeks the pains in my knees (that have plagued me for years) have vanished. Literally, I have no idea where they've gone. Similarly, when I wake up in the mornings there's no stiffness and I'm not struggling to bend so that I can walk down the stairs.

To my question: can a very very lazy Mediterranean diet (just drink olive oil and eat tuna lunch pots) work?

I use a very good quality olive oil too, I eat a lot of salads and use olive oil, balsamic vinegar and good honey as a dressing, I do believe it helps with my arthritis too. As a suggestion for you, try clove capsules, I've been taking  these for a while, very good for inflammation  :)

It's one of those cases where n=1 is all that really matters. That's what I think. If something I am doing is a placebo, I don't really care as long as it is working!

My grandparents used to swear by cod liver oil.

Or you might just be less achy because you are no longer carrying your dog.

Either way, if you start barking at the postman or sniffing people's butts, you'll know you've taken too much 😉

Hello ladies.

Fish oil is high in Omega Three Fatty Acids and these have an anti inflammatory effect on the body.
The other source of  Omega Three are plants and this is why a plant based diet lowers inflammation and why I eat this way to keep my Ulcerative Colitis in remission.

At one time I consumed about twenty fish oil capsules a day and although my digestion was fine I realised that this was probably too much. I didn't look any different but when I stopped the fish oil I lost the extra stone that I had put on.  All oils are highly calorific so perhaps keep this in mind if you are watching your weight.

Take care ladies.

Yes eat it all the time, salads, dips and cook with it. Get the good stuff though, organic and always extra virgin.
It oils the works. 👍

Absolutely it works.
Like Deirdre says it oils our joints.
Some people drink a shot of good expensive olive oil every morning, it’s the polyphenols in it, lowers cholesterol and regulates sugars.
Plus it’s good for our skin and hair too.

OK, so not going mad.  It was just that moment I looked at the dog and thought 'If it's good enough for him, then it's good enough for me'.

I'm having the expensive organic stuff.

Don't eat many salads in the winter and I don't really like the way olive oil makes salads feel in my mouth in the summer.

@ Jaypo, really strange you mention clove capsules, I've been craving clove (literally just put some mulled wine on because I fancy it so much).

I'll let you know if I start sniffing lamp posts and / or butts :)

Hello again ladies.

I think I'm right in saying that Olive oil contains Alpha Linoleic  Acid which the body converts to the anti inflammatory fatty acid.
I'm no expert so anyone interested can educate themselves by a bit of Googling.

An elderly friend of mine gave her Labrador ( also elderly) a tablespoon of olive oil daily. I think the vet suggested it to treat the dogs arthritis. I don't know how well this worked for  his arthritis but I do know he was very   overweight which probably didn't help him.

There is a lot of information online about reducing inflammation with food and supplements, my favourite site is NutritionbFacts.org.

Take care ladies.

Hi ElkWarning, how do you take the 2 Ttablespoons of oil everyday?

And what brand oil do you use? How do I know if it's a good quality one?

Thank you.

That's so interesting Kathleen and thank you for the link to the site. I'll have a look at some videos later.

@ Violet, I pour the oil out of the bottle on to a spoon and swallow it. I'm just using an organic extra virgin from my local hippy shop - forget what it's called and currently not near my kitchen.
