Title: Dry Throat
Post by: DottyD68 on November 19, 2024, 09:11:47 AM
Just when I thought I had experienced most of the long list of menopause symptoms (several times!) a new one this week. Severely scratchy and dry throat. Started to panic in the night about breathing.

I have gargled with both salt water and Difflem. Suck on throat pastilles, drink ginger tea and hot lemon and honey and have been taking sea buckthorn daily for years (for dry eyes). Plus am on HRT. Any other tips for dealing with it please? Face and ears also feel itchy in random places so I think it's a spell of drying out.

Hi CLKD,

I've had it in the daytime for past couple of days as well as at night and I sleep sucking on a Potters Catarrh pastille, so not sleeping with mouth open. I took a piriton at 3am and that seemed to ease it a bit but I already take fexofenadine daily for rhinitis so don't like to overdo the antihistamines.

It's so annoying ain't it!  Does it feel like a cold?  Keep hydrated, feet up, lots of TV on especially if it's snowing with you!

It doesn't feel like a cold. My nose is clear. Yes plenty of snow here today (5-6 inches) so not planning on going anywhere today. Don't think having central heating on helps.

Crikey I thought 1-2" snow/slush was enough  ;D.  My friend has bowls of water on the windowsills above radiators and 1 can open windows briefly to get a draught through.

Hi

I’ve been getting something similar. I wake in the night and my throat is tickly and I have to cough and have some water. It’s like it’s irritated but I guess it’s because it’s dry! Mine does settle after a few coughs and a drink.

I wondered if mine was reflux as I have. Hiatus hernia.

It’s very annoying!!!!

Hi JoannFran,

I am beginning to think it is a bout of Silent Reflux brought on by my lovely hormones. I had exactly the same as you last night. Woke twice by a really irritating tickle at the base of my throat and when I coughed it felt really irritated and difficult to clear.

My diet has always been pretty good but I am now on a real mission to stop or reduce anything that can cause acid or silent reflux, which appears to be anything nice and enjoyable  :'( >:(

I halved my patch a few weeks ago as I was getting signs of too much oestrogen (palpitations, jitters, anxiety). They have gone now but I seem to have swapped them for something else. Getting the balance right is so tricky.

I am also tryng Nexium and Gaviscon (at diff times of day) for next week or so to see if it settles, if not, back to GP.

I have an irritating clearing-throat type cough  >:( aggravated by hidden sugars, i.e. Coke, chocolate ......... my GP prescribes Omeparazolol which may/not help  ::).  Acid reflux 4 me is awful: too much liquid in the throat which may burn.  Or pain between the ribs/chest, begins anywhere after 3.00 a.m. and I have to sip fizzy water to clear it.  Some foods: but I don't remember which until I am affected: cause heart burn  >:(

I drink a really nice tea called Throat Comfort. It is from Holland & Barratt and made by Yogi Tea. Very soothing.

Funnily enough, mine hasn't been as bad since stopping HRT (although I am doing the animal based diet - meat, fish, dairy and eggs and a select few veg and fruits).  HRT definitely made my reflux worse so hopefully this will get better now I've stopped it.  xx

I also bought myself a U shaped pillow and I sleep slightly propped up now, which helps xx

I agree. I have had more bouts of night-time reflux/belching since I have been on the patches. One of the reasons I want to come off them.

We have a U shaped pillow which we call "the old person's pillow". I have actually just hung the pillowslip over the clothes dryer as my husband has been having a turn of it for his bad back. We are a pair of crocks.  ;D

Old crocks can fetch a lot of money in the antiques World  ;D

We are omnivores: meat, fish, fruits and veg.  I'm fussy about most fruits though especially those that require peeling  :D.  Can't be bothered  ;). I'm not keen on fish, not even in fingers.   :-\ as recent 'gone off that' moment because they tasted too fishy  ???

I made fun of my mum a few years ago, and now I can't sleep without it!!!

Funny CLKD - we had fish last night and i thought it was too fishy.  Turned my stomach.  I can still smell it in the house today.  My husband thinks I'm mad  ;D

My husband knows all about my sanity on an hourly basis  :D.  "Fish tasting like fish" ........... I won't have it cooked in the camper van ;-)

My mum always used to say leave a bowl of water by the radiators you have on and it'll combat the dryness caused by central heating. I have been getting dry eyes again since we started putting the heating on- reading your post has made the link for me!
