Title: Progesterone problems
Post by: Booblet on October 14, 2024, 12:47:36 PM
Hi everyone,
Just come back from appointment with Menopause Nurse at my local NHS surgery.

I'm quite upset: I had an appointment to fit the Marina Coil. She tried to fit it but apparently, couldn't see my Cervix. (I'm aware that the Cervix can shrink and the Vagina can 'fold-in') as you get older.

At the appointment I felt rushed and the Menopause Nurse wouldn't discuss alternative Progesterone types. Said she was short on time!
She also said that she could arrange a Gynecologist app but it would be in a years time!

However, I had a appointment with the Gynecologist Specialist (for a biopsy) 4 months ago and she, after 3 attempts allocated my Cervix. And did a biopsy.

I'm 64 and taking Sandrina Gel 1mg per day. However, I was prescribed Ustrogestron - which I had awful reactive symptoms  -  mainly massive increase in Anxiety symptoms. I am very sensitive to many "medicines " I have Excema and my allergen levels are extremely high. ( I tried Ustrogestron- virginal inserted - but still had same symptoms).

The Menopause Nurse is ringing me on Thursday to discuss Progesterone alternatives......I still want the Marina Coil........(I can't have hrt tablet firm due to having a suspected Tia ( small stroke), but feel the M.Nurse is pushing towards Ustrogestron......

I'm aware of Progesterone patches- but my Excema is very bad atm.

My questions are:
Do any members have any experience with suitable Progesterone alternatives that are more suited for women with severe allergies and sensitive skin?
And, are there members who have had similar experiences that I've had this morning?

I really appreciate your support and guidance.
Take Care....

4 months is a long time when hormones are up and down so it may be that this Nurse was unable to locate your cervix.

Do put 'mirena coil' into the search box on the forum to read the threads: make notes ;-).  Many react to progesterone .

R there any particular foods etc. that trigger the allergies?  Do U carry an epi-pen?  As we age allergies may become more noticable: oil seed rape and willow pollen cause my to be aware of a tightening chest for example.

Thks for your reply.
Yes, the M Nurse was unable to locate my Cervix, but that wasn't due to hormones.
Had Excema and allergies for a long time - I'm allergic to many; many things  - such as foods, pollution, materials and many more unfortunately.....
But Yes, lots pollen and seeds do affect me.

You have so many options!

If the mirena is your first choice, I would start using vaginal estrogen right now, in order to get your vagina and cervix into optimal condition, and get looking for a specialist to fit it, whether that is NHS or private.

Some private specialists may have a no fit no fee policy.

You could also try a local sexual health clinic, especially if you are able to pass for 10 or 12 years younger and say it's for contraception.

There is also the combination patch, or oral desogestrel, drospirenone, norethisterone or provera.

None of these involve taking oral estrogen, and are not contraindicated after a TIA - if you have actually had one.

Personally I wouldn't accept a "suspected" anything as barring me from any kind of hormone therapy, I would only take into account a definitive diagnosis. In particular the
?TIA label is sometimes thrown around a bit too easily when someone over 40 has unexplained neurological symptoms.

I'm not saying this is the case with you, but certainly a lot of women have suffered needlessly over the years after being told they can't take the pill or HRT, on the basis of very vague symptoms for which no pathological cause was ever found.

Thankyou so much for your reply  -  very helpful.
I agree with your view regarding fitting a Marina Coil by other Health Professionals and, your view with "suspect Tia"
Although I'm still waiting for an MRI scan with NHS. (national health service UK) to get a full diagnosis. Yes, there can be cases were "fit in the box" can apply with certain 'suspected" illnesses and diagnosis.

Unfortunately, I can't afford to go private to have the Marina Coil fitted, but will definitely demand a Gynecologist.

** Going back to my appointment with the M (Menopause Nurse) I have since researched the professional method that she should have adhered to: -

 1) She was short of time - her words
2). She only suggested one position for the insertion of the Coil, although she asked me to put my hands under my bottom!
3). In my view she didn't take long enough, or use several medical instruments.
I'm still very upset with what happened.**
I love your idea though about trying to look younger re: Coil for contraception - that did make me laugh!!
But I won't get away with it using our NHS Unfortunately!
I have tried virginal Estrogen Unfortunately it caused a bad reaction - hence, my high allergen level.
I will look into your suggested Progesterone medication.
Thank-you again
