Title: Any here going through Menopause with severe scoliosis?
Post by: kyleighterry on September 24, 2024, 01:58:59 AM
I have 2 curves , with my lumbar curve at 48 degrees. I’m worried that the loss of estrogen will worsen my curves , as I have heard of that happening. How did Menopause affect your scoliosis?

Morning .   :welcomemm:

How old R U, what R your periods doing, how do U feel overall?

R U under the care of an Orthopaedic Surgeon with annual X-rays?

R U able to exercise?

I would suggest that you ask your GP for a referral to a dedicated menopause Clinic - there are waiting lists both on the NHS and in the private sector.

I don't have scoliosis however my dad does as a result of osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

(To put it into perspective these occurred at 80 years old so don't panic).

Absolutely if you were to go for many years without estrogen, both the bones and the discs in your spine would deteriorate, which could worsen your existing scoliosis.

However you do not need to lose your estrogen - if your ovaries aren't producing it any more you can get it in a pill patch or spray.

If you have reduced access to weight bearing exercise this can increase the risk so you need to be really on it and advocate for yourself, more so than those living in typical bodies.
