Title: Can anyone advise me about blood test results?
Post by: Donnadoobie on August 27, 2024, 02:11:25 PM
Can any of you knowledgeable ladies help to shed some light on these results?  I recently had my annual blood tests. I was so wrapped up in my cholesterol tests that I never really studied the other ones as they seemed fine.

I had to download an app today (Airmid UK) to cancel a physio appointment on there. I then found the detailed Liver and Kidney test results.

Both are flagged as Boardeline but for the life of me I cannot make head nor tail of why! They all fall in the correct parameters.

Results

Kidney

Urea and electrolytes
Serum sodium level 139 mmol/L [133.0 - 146.0]

Serum potassium level 4.2 mmol/L [3.5 - 5.3]

Serum urea level 4.5 mmol/L [2.5 - 7.8]

Serum creatinine level 58 umol/L [45.0 - 84.0]

eGFR using creatinine (CKD-EPI) per 1.73 square metres > 90 mL/min/1.73m^2

Urine test was normal.

Liver function tests

Serum bilirubin level 7 umol/L [< 21.0]

Serum total protein level 72 g/L [60.0 - 80.0]

Serum albumin level 41 g/L [35.0 - 50.0]

Serum globulin level 31 g/L [21.0 - 35.0]

Serum alkaline phosphatase level 87 u/L [30.0 - 130.0]

Serum alanine aminotransferase level 22 u/L [< 34.0]

What am I missing and should I be worried?

They're all normal and if these were my results I'd be very happy!

The "borderline" comment may have been added in relation to another result from same sample eg the cholesterol you mentioned, and has just been propagated by the computer system to apply to all results from that sample.

I wondered yesterday, as I was thinking about it, that maybe it is borderline because of my age(62) and that I take bp meds and to ensure an annual follow up.  My glucose was in normal range, even though I am officially pre diabetic and shows ‘normal’

I have to stop worrying, I am an over thinker!

I queried a borderline result as I couldn't find any issue and it was exactly as bombsh3ll said.  The doctor said the system puts all the tests in the same batch with the same note, even if they are ok.  Not helpful really!

How R U pre-diabetic?   The Surgery went into over-drive 12 months ago when my blood sugar levels were higher than expected - without taking into account that I take statins  >:(.  When I went for my shingles boosters on Friday the Nurse met me with the words "You are at a high risk of developing diabetes".  Well, actually nope.  >:(

I wouldn't know what blood results etc. were within normal limits/not ...... I go a lot on how I feel  ;).  I think being able to read results on line can send us into over thinking!

Hello Donnadoobie

Back in the day I would have my GP surgery print off my results. At the top of each page there would be a recommendation to the doctor. Fortunately the note usually said 'No action required ' but the alternative was 'refer to GP.'.
It seems that your results are in the normal range so perhaps the borderline comment refers to your blood sugar results as you pre diabetic?

Wishing you well and take care.

K.

Thanks for all the comments.

CLKD I have been pre diabetic for 10 years but am strict with my food and generally my glucose is at the top of normal range but if I don’t stick to a low carb diet my blood glucose will go back into pre diabetic range.

I am thinking that it may say borderline because I have high blood pressure, even though very controlled in meds and they have to test liver and kidney function every year!  I don’t know.  All looked fine to me which is why I was shocked to see borderline on both tests.  Glucose was shown as normal and cholesterol ( which I knew would be the bad one) was High. Not taking the statins though, for well thought out reasons, which I won’t bore you with here.
