Title: Need advice - Migraines and anxiety
Post by: Jen2024 on July 31, 2024, 01:50:28 PM
Hiya
I'm 40, been suffering with peri menopause symptoms for about 2 years. Finally started HRT in January. Started with 25mg estrogen/progesterone patches for 3 months, but the mid/end of cycle waves of fatigue, migraines and anxiety wouldn't budge. I switched to the gel (2 pumps) and progesterone tablets (2 x 100 at night) about a month ago. First 2 weeks was on the gel and tablets I felt amazing. I'm now mid cycle and from about day 12 have been getting increasingly tired and anxious. It hit a peak earlier in the week where I just feel so dizzy, sick and the worst anxiety and depression I've ever had in my life.

But I'm not sure whats happening, whether I've got too much estrogen or not enough? I checked my blood test from december last year and my estrogen was 91 pmol in the leutal phase if thats relevant?

Hope that make sense? really struggling with words and thinking today! I was considering paying out for a private appointment, but not sure if/how they can help me and they are very expensive if they cant

:welcomemm:  which symptom would you like to ease first? What we often forget is that treatment is 'replacement'.  Some find the progesterone part of a regime difficult, many opt for a mirena coil instead of patches etc..

Blood tests are reliably un-reliable.  Some of those symptoms may well B hormonal.

Anxiety can be triggered as hormones rise and fall, there is appropriate medication though some feel that HRT should be trialled first.  However I'be been taking anti-depressant and anxiety meds for years ....... GP went on my symptoms.

I had nausea at certain parts of my cycle too.

I just feel like I've felt unwell for years now. I get a glimmer of myself for a day or two and then bam back to this weird tired exhaustion. My ears ring and my head hurts and I can't do anything. When the anxiety hits too I feel like it's taking over my life. I just desperately want to feel like myself again. I don't know what's left if I give up on HRT. Or maybe I'm not doing HRT right and absorbing enough?!

I've taken antidepressants before but they make me feel a bit numb inside. But maybe anything would be better than feeling like this every month!

If you were feeling better initially and then started experiencing worsening symptoms, it might be helpful to check your current estrogen levels.

I’ve had a similar experience. I started with patches and switched to gel and tablets, and felt great at first but then had issues with fatigue and anxiety. It might be worth talking to your doctor about these new symptoms and possibly getting another blood test. Private appointments can be pricey, but they might help you find the right balance quicker.

Hiya, thought I'd post an update

So I continued with the gel and progesterone tablets. But when I felt the anxiety in a morning and tiredness I topped up with another pump and when it felt particularly bad 2 pumps, so a total of 4. Wanted to see if it was low estrogen causing the issues. Turns out adding in an extra pump when needed made me feel so much better.
Most days I'm on two pumps, but I think I'm going to speak to GP about upping to 3 as it's made a world of difference. I think I just don't absorb it very well. Also noticed I've done better since applying to my shoulders each day and rubbing it in more, seems to work better than thighs.
This month no migraine and anxiety is at bay, hope it stays this way!!!!
